People only said that because the first episode of the American version was almost identical to the first episode of the British version, and the British version of that episode was better (if only because it was first). The American version took on its own identity, though. Watch ‘em both. They’re great.

@Zack – The first American episode copied the English version almost verbatim. After that, the American version went it’s own way.

I think the American Office is the third best show I’ve ever seen. After Gervais (and Merchant)’s The Office and Extras…

Ricky Gervais said he gets pissed when people say “British Version of ‘The Office’” because it’s theirs and not a version of anything, it is original. Like if Pakistan started making “The Simpsons” and now everytime you wanted to talk about “The Simpsons” you have to say “The American version of ‘The Simpsons’”

I am sure you are glad that I shared that with you.

So anyways, do yourself a favor and DONT watch it on tv because it can be a bit difficult to understand and you need to watch it with the captions on, plus you will miss all the swearing if you watch it on tv. Other than that, I found it to be really funny, but you have to just ignore references made to British culture that you might not understand and just move on instead of trying to figure out what they are talking about.

Both versions are hilarious. The British version is a little less absurd, but it only ran for 12 episodes, so they didn’t have to be.

You can’t even compare the British version and the American one. The British one only made 14 episodes, ever. And they are flawless. The American one has to crank out like 50 a year. Obviously the American one isn’t going to hold up in comparison, but it’s still pretty great in its own right.
