THIS IS RIDICULOUSLY HEARTWARMING
04.14.09On this weekend’s “Britain’s Got Talent,” a frumpy 47-year-old unemployed cat woman named Susan Boyle went on stage and sang “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables. The producers set her up to look like one of the crazies who make an ass of themselves — not that that was terribly hard — but then something special happened. Boyle ROCKED it. She absolutely owned the song. You can actually see Simon Cowell’s heart turn from black to red and start pumping blood for the first time in years.
I know that we bloggers work in constant hyperbole — every day something is the best or worst ever. And that’s a shame, because this is the single most surprising and touching moment I’ve ever seen from a reality show. I admit, when I watched this clip last night, I got a little misty. Okay, I cried a little. A lot. I sobbed throughout the second half of the song. But to be fair, I’d been drinking, and I’ve got some other stuff going on in my life. Don’t judge me!

I imagined that the mic was my penis, became fully engorged, and came at about 2:40 of the video.
Wow. I won’t even try to make a joke. That was pretty amazing. And I despise Karaoke Idol shows.
I hate the cynicism of reality tv and the fake heartwarming moments of American Idol, but this is really incredible. Good for her.
Something’s wrong. My Grinch heart just grew two sizes … no, wait … three!
Reminds me of the Paul Potts thing.
Stole my thunder, Robo, I was wondering if that wasn’t Paul Potts in drag.
Paul Potts was freakin awesome. Haven’t watched this yet (no audio @ work), but Potts is gonna be hard to top.
I’d hit it.
Hasnt this formula already jumped the shark?
Neal Boyd, Paul Potts, Susan Boyle, Axel Rose
So apparently Britain has talent, but doesn’t have mirrors.
Come on guys, that’s as fake a moment as any. She barely got the first note out and and the judges already had a “surprise” face from high school acting classes. And the cheezy commentators “didn’t expec dat did ya” a whole five seconds into it. Nice restraint producers! Show some consideration for timing.
@Todd: don’t forget Brian Gaynor. That guy was awesome.
I’m crying, but only so that hot girl judge will think I’m sensitive.
Damn, I was going to dress up like a middle-aged woman to win over the hot girl.
@Stinky Pete: I don’t think so, she hasn’t killed nearly enough Cambodians.
Well you have to admit Basil, she is a bit mannish. No offense man, but it does look like she was hit with the ugly stick as a child.
My Catholic upbringing might color my opinion, but to my mind Andrew Johnston [www.youtube.com] is the best clip on this theme.
