THIS IS DEPRESSING
07.20.09In case you don’t watch “Entourage” (good for you), Season 6 has begun with everyone saying that Vincent Chase’s fictional performance in a fictional Scorcese film called Gatsby is his best fictional performance ever. (Because Scorcese does that a lot. He remakes all the Robert Redford films he can get his hands on.)
And that, apparently, led to this. An actual person is inspired to read The Great Gatsby because the main character in “Entourage” was in a fictional film adaptation of it. I want to see the positive in this; really, I do. Gatsby is — more than any other book, I’d argue — the Great American Novel. It’s a triumph of letters — modest, compact, unhurried despite its brevity, a very big story in very few words. So it’s good that one more person in the world will read it.
And yet… I’m sorry, but I can’t get over the reasoning behind it. Even proponents of “Entourage” will admit that the show is simplistic mind candy, not a source for your summer reading list. Somebody saying that “Entourage” inspired them to read The Great Gatsby is like someone saying they’re reading The Diary of Anne Frank “for all the Jew-killin’.”
(thanks to Mike for the tip)

Yes it is. Its a great movie don’t you think??
Thanks Charlie and Codename Dragonfly! Glad that there are people out there who get my intentions in humor and have my back on this.
I’m still in disbelief at how libelous the article and comments are when I am a completely unknown figure in the world of Internet infamy. But maybe this will change, depending on how far this article is taken. My best friend thinks that we should end up on E!’s The Soup with Joel McHale…
Also, to Codename Dragonfly, is your username a reference to the Roman Coppola film, CQ, perchance? If so,fancy, I like it!
Charlie I would like to give you an exploding Hi-Five!! :) you rock! you said everything I wanted to say!
Yeah niccidawn16, as I was reading this whole thing I was going to say to that I’m sure you meant it as a joke and sarcastic, which I see and I thought was funny. To have this asshole who, I’m sure, doesn’t even know you take this completely out of context and saying that “someone would read The Diary of Anne Frank “for all the Jew-killin.” Which is incredibly offense to me (being Jewish) and may other people. I mean thats just fucked up.
And to you other people judging and criticizing her saying things like “lets be honest, the only thing this girl reads is US Weekly (because People has too many words!) No way she gets past Pg 2″ Do you know her?? No. And how do you know People has too many words? Do you read that one often? does it you frustrated cause you can’t make it past the cover??
And who is anyone to say where people get inspiration from? If she or someone were inspired to read that book or any other from a tv show so what? that person has just found something to take their interests away from mind numbing television and youtube videos and back to reading. I say no matter what it is, if it inspires you to try something new, become more creative then go for it no one should be judged on that.
niccidawn16 I got your back, and to all others that commented on this that think this guy is a douche bag Congrats!!
Hi, I’m niccidawn16 of Twitter. You know, the depressing fuck who was using sarcasm in the reported tweet.
For the record, I don’t watch Entourage. My tweet was inspired by my boyfriend telling me about the storyline of the show, when I had already started reading the novel. I was being SARCASTIC, something that I’m sure is not new to the Internet.
Also, I am extremely insulted that you would compare me to “someone saying they’re reading The Diary of Anne Frank “for all the Jew-killin’.”” Wow, you’re an asshole.
Get a life, dude.
And remember: When you assume, you make an ass out of u and me.
remember when Gatsby put out that spacerock jam that sounded like Elton John fronting the Darkness? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol52eu67isk yeah me neither.
umm…upinak….the original ending of American History X had Derek shaving his head and going back to being a neo-nazi. Except for Starship Troopers, its on the most fascist scripts ive ever read
Entourage has actually caused a number of people to loon into some fairly interesting real life things. When the story first started revolving around Pablo Escobar, I know a lot of people talked about not knowing a whole lot about him and looked into him.
ur retarded for trying to make this a bad thing
congrats
Gatsby: off-putting yet depressing, Catcher: off-putting, depressing & Awesome!; Confederacy of Dunces: Now THERE’S a Great American Novel! (But for my money, give me anything by Sinclair Lewis any time.)
@CK I HATED Catcher in the Rye with the fire of a thousand suns. It was so fuckin’ depressing. But The Great Gatsby was awesome. Jay Gatsby is living the American dream, yet he still can’t get what he really wants fully: Daisy. That’s the Great American Novel right there.
The Great Gatsby is not the “great American Novel” if anything something like Grapes of Wrath or Catcher in the Rye. I hate that this book is required reading in high school, it’s not very long, it’s a very simple story and while it may embody the “spirit” of the 20′s that doesn’t make it a great story.
Anyway, why should anything that makes someone go out and buy a book be a bad thing? The ends justify the means.
This reminds me for some reason of a wannabe Nazi kid I went to highschool with, who’s favorite movie was American History X. His positition was that “since that nig-nog killt his brudder in the end, that means Derick was right in bein a racist”. For some reason I don’t think he “got it”. Hell, he is probibly still waiting for the sequel where Norton shaves his head and seeks revenge on his brothers killer.
Lets be honest, the only thing this girl reads is US weekly (because People has too many words!). No way she gets past pg. 2
Yeah- the writing on entourage has redefined mailing it in- but whatever, its 19-22 minutes on a Sunday night where I get to stare blankly at the tv without thinking about anything other than things I would do if won the lottery and breathing.
Whoa, the Great Gatsby was a book?!?
Dammit Ufford, you have to read Night for all the good Jew-Killin’!
Why are you sending your readers erroneous information?
The Great Gatsby inspired me to take the book and bludgeon Adrian Grenier to death with it.
I’m starting to get the feeling that the character Loyd might be gay.
on the one hand, the Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books.
on the other hand – wait, why are you following a 16 year old girl on twitter?
the education system has clearly failed a large portion of our generation. We’re all doomed!
I’m going to stock up on guns, ammo, and fuel.
@Upstate – yes, yes he did…because fat, gay asians are funny and yelling at them for being so is also funny.
Made sweeter only by the inclusion of a Nietzsche quote in her profile.
If it wasn’t for Entourage, I never would have read Aquaman. I didn’t read Aquaman 2, though. Jake G. is such a fag.
Well I think Entourage is pretty good.
@Don T, and let me guess Ari yelled at Lloyd for being fat and gay.
You know, even then, someone starting to read is never a bad thing.
This is so depressing. The fact that ENTOURAGE inspired her and not THE WIRE is such a damning statement for this generation.
I would rather Entourage tell me what to read than Peter King.
/I would fuck Adrian Grenier if it meant that I could also kill him.
Three weeks from now:
“ZOMG!!1! Gatsby is totally Vinny Chase, and Nick Carraway is E!! I love this book!”
*cough* Sun Also Rises */cough*
Ufford, you owe me a new window and laptop.
(By the way, no chance she “gets” it.)
Did Shakespeare write a story based on a movie with Leo and Clair Danes?
This line from “Back to School” inspired me to read The Great Gatsby
Diane: How would you characterize “The Great Gatsby”?
Thornton Melon: He was… uh… great!
The amount of “Jew-killin’” in The Diary of Anne Frank is far lower than you might expect.
CSI Miami inspired me to read Crime and Punishment
I think I finally know why people go on killing sprees
oh and btw… everyone last night on entourage got laid…
i hated the great gatsby with a passion
