Best Week Ever did a nice job of finding the opening sequence of the Austrian cop/dog show “Kommissar Rex,” which originally aired from 1994-2004 (with two more new seasons beginning in 2007) and starred Inglorious Basterds actor Gedeon Burkhard and a very intelligent German shepherd.  It’s absolutely delightful.  Rex jumps through windows!  He barks!  He… uhhh… solves crime?

The original series is set in Vienna and focuses on the three-man staff of an office of the Kriminalpolizei – the Austrian Crimial Police – specifically a Mordkommission, or Murder Commission. In addition to the three policemen, the office is staffed by a German Shepherd called Rex who functions variously as a cadaver dog, a sniffer dog (for both contraband and narcotics) and as another pair of eyes and ears for his team. That’s 12 seasons, people.  Twelve years of a dog helping to solve murder cases.  137 episodes, and Germans are still eating it up.  Shouldn’t Rex be paired with a rookie cop by now?  “Hey kid, listen to me and you might not killed.”  And it’s only a week until Rex’s retirement, why is he getting involved in that organized crime case now?  Enter the gruff police commissioner: “Dammit Rex!  You pissed all over the crime scene!  AGAIN! Bad dog!”
