There’s no accounting for taste, and people are particularly picky about what they think is funny, so I’m sometimes hesitant to write about what I like. But I watched five sitcom premieres last night, and the overall quality was too good not to discuss. Given the general crappiness of scripted comedy (and TV in general), it feels good to occasionally step up and say, “Hey, nice job, TV executives. You weren’t idiots for once.”
With that, here’s my ranking for the five shows I saw last night, starting at merely enjoyable and counting down to must-watch laugh riot. (Note that these rankings are only for the episode I watched, and do not speak to a show’s overall body of work.)
5. Parks and Recreation, NBC. I missed all of Season 1, but the reviews tended toward disappointing. Season 2 seems to be off to a more promising start, but I can’t quite get over the way that the single-camera documentary style makes this look and feel like a less-funny version of “The Office.” Still, it’s well-written, Amy Poehler is effective, and Aziz Ansari and Rashida Jones are excellent. I doubt this show will ever be a priority for me, but I’ll still enjoy it when I watch it.
4. The Office, NBC. Last night’s season debut proved that the show is still solid. Steve Carell is still a genius of awkward comedy, everything Creed says is amazing, yadda yadda. Nothing has changed; it’s still good.
3. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, FX. It’s almost unfair to rank this third, since last night’s episode was hilarious. The gang is still a bunch of self-absorbed idiots with half-baked plans that go awry, and that’s fine with me.
2. Community, NBC. Perhaps “Sunny” provides louder laughs, but the way this show crammed so much story and characterization into half an hour won me over. The pilot was brilliantly written: in 22 minutes, we got the perfect feel for McHale’s charming but dishonest fallen lawyer, his love interest, and at least five more supporting roles without any character feeling underdeveloped. And the entire episode occurred over the course of one afternoon and evening. It was sharp and tight; I look forward to watching this every week.
1. Archer, FX. FX kept the sneak preview this animated spy-comedy under wraps, not even listing it in the TV guides. I was hopeful about this, but I wasn’t expecting it to be the comedic dynamite it turned out to be. The scene that was released online — which I found pretty funny — actually brought fewer laughs than any other scene in the pilot. Sterling Archer is an outstanding character: charming, cruel, unapologetically self-absorbed, and emotionally hobbled by mommy issues. “Archer’s” first episode was zany and crude enough to be on Adult Swim (there were jokes involving interracial porn and dolphin puppets), but it had better writing and more appealing artwork. It kills me that this won’t air again until January.
Disagree? It’s probably because you’re ugly. But feel free to flame me in the comments anyway. That’s what the Internet’s for.

@Stinky Pete
I agree. I think they could have cut out the entire lawyer character and gotten the time they needed to develop the other stories. Still, I did like the chicken fight they had at the very end.
Archer is great for 2 reasons. 1) The genius of Adam Reed. 2) The genius of H Jon Benjamin.
Maybe because I wasn’t expecting much out of “Community” — the promos didn’t interest me one much — is why I liked it a lot. I thought it was funny as hell.
Hell yeah Hell’s funny. Who doesn’t get a belly laugh watching the eternal damned burn?
I’ll be honest, I thought It’s Always Sunny faltered at the end of the episode, the way they wrapped up the story lines felt forced to me. The first 18 minutes rocked, though.
The Community pilot was god awful. I hope they pick it up. Needs more Mr. Chang. Less everyone else.
P&R. I really should have tried to get into this show last year, but I didn’t. I’ll keep giving it a try, but last night’s episode was underwhelming. Maybe I expected too much, but I don’t think I laughed in any of the Rashida Jones scenes, which is ridiculous because I loved her in The Office. Aziz Ansari singlehandedly keeps this show afloat.
The office is still the office. I worry about how much longer they can keep it going strong, but I’m still enjoying it. Feels like it should be an hour long show now with all the characters.
Community is awesome, which I’ve said before. Yes, it’s smarmy, but it’s Joel McHale, so what were people expecting? John Oliver rocks and Chevy Chase may be relevant for the first time this century. Good to see.
Ass Burgers had me laughing out loud, which I never do when I’m alone. Weird.
Ufford, I thought you had the same disorder as me where with every 750 words about television you have to somehow link it to Mad Men. Hence, I’m surprised that you failed to mention the utter hotness of none other than “Hell’s Bell’s Trudy!” actress (Pete Cambell’s wife, Alison Brie) rockin’ a great auxiliary role on Community as Adderol Annie (above pictured, far right).
Apparently Punte is busy elsewhere, so: You keep fucking that chicken, Thursday night!
The thought of me dead gave you an erection? No, no…half an erection.
Parks & Recreation- I love the secondary characters, her boss, the intern, and Aziz…. but Amy Poehler, and her character, are excruciatingly unfunny. Thank god for dvr fast forward.
Office: I still watch because I find the story compelling enough but laugh out loud moments are getting hard to come by with this show.
Community: Tought to say- I’d seen so many clips and the pilot on facebook already but I think there is potential with that cast.
Always Sunny: Great as usual- so glad its back.
Archer: Holy shit. If this was done on purpose it was a genius move- Comcast listed the entire hour as Always Sunnny- so my DVR recorded this along with Always Sunny. So glad it happened either way, I was dying laughing. The line about his shirt smelling like Indira Ghandi’s thong made me pee my pants a little…. and I’m not someone who does that. So fucking funny.
is there any place to watch archer online?
i had a lot of down time at work this morning and watched the community pilot on hulu. completely agree matt, i was very pleasantly surprised. there were a lot of laughs and the john oliver character killed it.
I put up my impressions on the What’s On Tonight post, but suffice it to say I mostly agree with Matt. Thursdays are looking damn good. Now, if only every other network and day could match the quality, I’d have an excuse to be a vegetable, rather than a life choice.
Archer was hands down the best show on last night – hilarious!
“Just the tip” :-D
This is what I get for having a DVR? Stupid technology. *shakes fist at FX* …then remembers reruns and sets DVR via internet.
Same writers? I loved Dingo, and I loved Archer. The whole time my wife and I watched it I was laughing, and she was reading. Perfect!
Archer is Adam Reed and Matt Thompson? I had not heard that.
That would explain why it seemed similar….
Speaking as a kid who grew up in the 80s, thursday night has always been a crucial night for comedic entertainment. The Cosby Show. Cheers. Anchors in a rough sea. Thursday night is the night you root for yourself to be entertained effectively. If I could channel Mr. Burns for a moment, “I know what I hate, and I don’t hate this.” Thursday night TV is inherently non-iconoclastic.
Archer/Frisky Dingo –> same creators.
Archer was awesome….though I couldn’t help but feel like I was watching a knockoff of Frisky Dingo (which was IMO the most well written Adult Swim show). Also – when they drew Sterling Archer did they just trace a picture of Dan Patrick?
None was given, I believe. I only realized it was coming on with the promos during It’s Always Sunny…
The Office started off slow, but got going well with the rumor plotline. PARKOUR!
I gave up on Parks and Rec last year.
I turned off Community with a few minutes left. I thought it was smarmy and I didn’t laugh once. I really like Joel McHale and John Oliver and Ken Jeong, so I’ll probably give it another shot, but the pilot did nothing for me. Seemed like they took a lot of unnecessary cheap shots at community college too and I’m not just saying that because I’m a graduate of Alameda County Community College (just kidding, I dropped out).
Archer looks epically awesome, but I had no idea it premiered last night. TIVO! GET TO WORK!
I Tivoed Sunny, but haven’t watched it yet. It is hands down the funniest show on television though.
Did I miss the heads-up on Archer, or was none given?
