DON DRAPER IS #1
10.06.09So, this is kind of harmless and fun, the sort of thing that makes the Internet a place a joyous place to make fun of things: AskMen.com has ranked the top 49 most influential men of 2009, and Don Draper from “Mad Men” is #1. Number two is the world record-setting sprinter Usain Bolt. Number three is someone named Barack Obama.
The men of the Top 49 span multiple industries and countries; through their achievements, both personal and professional, they have inspired everyday guys in a variety of ways. They’re the men we look to as role models, and history will remember them as those who best embodied the way men aspired to live in 2009.
Yes, when history examines the masculine ideal of 2009, number one on the list will be a philandering fictional character two generations in the past. Number two is a dude who runs fast. Number three is the first black president of the United States. And yet… really, not such a bad list. I’m a lot more jealous of Don Draper than I am of Obama.
(full list begins here)

Ask Men is the Entourage of websites. There, I said it.
It would have been more fitting if Our Fearless Leader came in at #4 (just like in Copenhagen).
/doesn’t have a better suggestion for #3, doesn’t care
If Don Draper inspires one chino-wearing suburban dickhead to start dressing like a goddamn grown man, then he deserves the nod. I’m not sure how Bolt is exactly influential. It’s not like young black men needed someone to inspire them to be fast. Cops have been doing that for decades.
M-I-Z-Z-O-U
Jon Hamm, FTW
Obama was number one last year. He should be disqualified.
I think Don Draper has inspired me most this year. Hence, a fresh DUI and thousands wasted on suits and alcohol. And that time I got my ass kicked in a hotel room with two strangers.
Don Draper isn’t real, thus shouldn’t be influential at all and Askmen.com is written by faggots, for faggots.
Even the write up by Askmen trying to explain why a fictional character is number is so queer, you’d think that the guy that wrote it was actually cradling Jon Hamm’s balls with his mouth. Further proof of that website’s overwhelming gayness, is the fact that Facebook creator, Mark Zuckerberg is 4th, Simon Cowell is 5th and fashion designer Tom Ford is 12th. Cut, print, gay.
I’m gonna go hang out with Vince the Shamwow guy, as he’s been more influential in my life than what Askmen likes to pretend has influenced me.
That all being said, Jon Hamm is a great actor and Mad Men is an awesome show.
@Maxwell: nice work
You know, as much as I love Mad Men and the character, Don Draper- is anyone disturbed that a deserter of the Korean War is considered the paragon of masculinity?
Usain Bolt has influenced me in so many ways. From running fast to…running quickly. He transcends his sport and is ingrained in our culture.
He’s the fast guy, right? Sometimes I confuse his name for an energy drink.
With that banner pic, I first assumed this was site news that Ufford had slept with several IT technicians.
That show has three great DDs–one is Don Draper, the other two are Joan.
Barack Obama can move up when he nails January Jones twice in Rome.
Just how far do you want to expand the list?
If they expanded the list, would Ufford rank below Spencer Pratt?
I guess it’s not a Top 50 list because Ask.Men thought the original selection of Roman Polanski at 13 was no longer appropriate.
Ashton Kutcher made the list so I have to say the list sucks.
This being the Year of Reality TV Death, Ryan Jenkins should have made the list.
