KENAN THOMPSON WAS… FUNNY?
10.19.09The cast of “Saturday Night Live” is always a divisive subject. There’s no hard and fast conventional wisdom for who’s good and who’s as funny as watching your parents die of cancer. My favorites in the present cast are Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, but some people who ordinarily see eye-to-eye with me think they’re awful, so I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything here.
My point is, I detest Kenan Thompson, but I give credit where it’s due: I love this ‘What Up With Dat?” sketch. It’s ridiculously silly and it goes against the grain of SNL’s standard talk show skit. Well played, everyone.
I didn’t see the rest of the episode — I was too busy destroying brain cells in Las Vegas and guaranteeing an eternity in hell — but please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments re: Gerard Butler’s hosting stint.

I love Kenan, he is the funniest person on SNL at the moment. My least favorite person EVER is Will Farrell, actually makes me gag…just my own opinion. Man u are all way into this aren’t you, just sayin’
First the Reba skit and then What Up With That? I laughed so hard I hurt myself. They are both supersilly and I can see why many people wouldn’t think they’re funny but I think the two are pure genius. Same goes for Pootie Tang and Hot Rod. Both are two of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen but both are almost universally loathed.
I want Will Forte to bear my children
Before you get all worked up, allow me elaborate. ,
This skit was hilarious, the show was by far the best of the season.
And if you don’t agree, you are most certainly retarded in the brainhole.
Its hard to choose a favorite part of this sketch so i’ll just list them:
Jason Sudekis’ dancing
Will Forte doing the robot
Kristen Wiig dancing
Butler singing lewd R&B
So to clarify, the joke is: “what up with that” — I’m just asking.
Wait, I thought Jason Sudekis was a poor man’s John Krasinski.
That sketch needed way less Kenan Thompson and way more James Franco humping me in my imagination.
They should have a sketch where Kristin Wiig plays a really socially-awkward person who is unaware how odd she is, and everyone reacts to her.
What’s that? That’s EVERY SINGLE FUCKING SKETCH SHE EVER DOES? Well I’ll be.
Only funny thing about that was Jason Sudeikis dancing. Kenan Thompson is one decent black comic away from infinite obscurity. And I’m awaiting anxiously.
I think once the ether and alcohol wear off, you may rethink the whole “this sketch was funny” thing.
“I agree with Tarzan”
Funniest thing about this entire post.
I actually thought that skit kinda sucked. Only thing I found funny about it was Sudeikis dancing in the background. I agree with Tarzan…the Beauty and the Beast skit was the best. Weekend Update was pretty good, too.
kenan thompson has been playing the same character since he was 13.
I just think it’s unfair that Lindsey Buckingham keeps getting bumped. He’s one of America’s true treasures!
I liked the Beauty and the Beast skit. The rest of the show was pretty bad.
Completely agree…very funny sketch. Bill Hader and Wiig are hilarious. Samberg is also pretty funny (See the movie Hot Rod and I dare you to not laugh your ass off.) Didn’t watch the episode either. Gerard butler has been a seel out lately and I heard Law abiding citizens kinda sucked.
Maybe I wouldn’t detest Wiig so much if they didn’t put her and her terrible acting skills into every fucking sketch. She’s worse than Melanie Hutzell. Yeah, I said it.
Matt – if you didn’t like the sponsored Family Guy, you’re going to detest the Bud Light Wheat sponsored rehearsal clips they showed all night. unfunny old skits sponsored by a shit beer.
Bill Hader is the best current cast memeber, followed by Samburg and Wig.
I quite enjoyed the “Thomas” sketch, though I can’t say exactly why.
Nice skit…..
….only problem….like many SNL skits…..
…it went on too long…..
….this one was about 6 minutes and 8 seconds too long….
I just watched the clip and that chick in the background, who said “fuck” on SNL a couple of weeks ago, looks quite hot.
Damn, I lost interest after 3 minutes of that clip, sorry. I’m sure it got a lot funnier after that. Incidentally, is Jason Sudeikis the poor man’s Ed Helms or is Ed Helms the poor man’s Jason Sudeikis?
I didn’t see any of the episode. I was too busy watching the Yankees win Saturday night/Sunday morning.
Jason Sadakis had me rolling with his dancing in that skit.
This whole episode was awesome, and will go down in history as possibly the greatest ever*.
*Hasn’t seen it.
“I was too busy destroying brain cells in Las Vegas and guaranteeing an eternity in hell”
Someone has their favorite book, “I hope they serve beer in Hell” stuck in their head.
Bill Hader carries the show now. If not for him, Wiig, and Fred Armisen’s cavalcade of ‘meh’-impressions, there would be little but a steaming pile of digital shorts and a sad, empty weekend update desk.
The Hader alien in the ESPN call-in show gets me. And I will watch any movie where he has a role. Anything.
the episode sucked. it didnt help that Samberg has swine flu
I thought Butler did alright. Not the funniest show ever, but I do think it was the best this season. Not saying much, I know…
