According to a study conducted by the Parents’ Television Council, the depiction of violence against women on TV has skyrocketed in the last five years, with the number of instances rising 120% since 2004. Cases where the teenage girls were the victim rose a shocking 400%, but let’s face it: teenage girls say some pretty punch-worthy things.
The report suggested that violent acts against women and teen girls was increasing at rates that far exceed the two percent increase in overall violence that the study found existed on TV between 2004-2009.
The PTC compared prime-time programing on networks ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox in February and May 2004 and the same months in 2009. It said every network except ABC showed a dramatic increase in stories that included beatings, violent threats, shooting, rape, stabbing and torture. [The Live Feed]
This is definitely a cause for concern, but I wish these studies were done by actual research groups and not advocacy groups with an agenda. For example, how does the rise in violence against women compare to the rise in violence overall? And what about the years in between? Was this a steady trend or a one-year spike? And which channel can guarantee me the most rape?

@Tracer Bullet — I’m pretty sure The Live Feed page was edited from when I originally read it (it auto-refreshes). When I first saw it, it said 2002-2004, hence my misunderstanding. Or at very least, that’s how I misread it.
Whatever the case, the point was the rape joke.
I think the most important stat to see would be violence against females vs violence against MALES, and how it correlates to the real ratio in society. I would GUESS it’s still WAY in favor of violence against men, in which case, shut your holes women. You wanted realism and equality, HERE IT BE.
Women wanna be the leads in TV shows, then god damnit, you better be ready for a little violence. You can’t be the damsel in distress while also trying to kick some ass. FUCK I HATE PEOPLE!!!
Wow, I didn’t know that 120% more women on TV since 2004 don’t know how to listen, or cook dinner on time.
…teenage girls say some pretty punch-worthy things.
Missing tag: Geez Punter, That’s Just Wrong.
Matt, I’m worried about that Fox Rape Channel after what they did with a news channel I’m afraid they’re going to give rape a bad name.
While actual violence can wait, don’t forget to lovingly sniff the acid in your acid container. And know that I love you.
“The report suggested that violent acts against women and teen girls was increasing at rates that far exceed the two percent increase in overall violence that the study found existed on TV between 2004-2009.”
It’s obvious you don’t read the things you post, but you could try to make a little less obvious.
What would Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, think about this???

//never really was a “right topic” for this, I guess
How much of that 400% increase is attributable to Meg Griffin getting farted on?
You all said “rape” twice.
The PTC also expressed concern over Fox Networks’ launch of The Rape Channel.
@wehavehair: thanks.
This must be because women are unfairly depicted on television now only as doctors, district attorneys, financial executives, and similar fictional roles.
Yeah, but how many of those women getting beaten on tv were doctors or lawyers?

According to this headline, you sort of got your wish:

ABC din’t have an increase. Coincidence that ABC is the network that doesn’t have a Law and Order/CSI/NCIS franchise to bleed out? I think not.
in related news, incidents of spousal abuse in the greater new york area increased by 6,500% percent last night
“And which channel can guarantee me the most rape?”
From what I’ve been reading lately, ESPN. Oh, you mean on-air?
All that violence and yet nobody has the balls to stab Nancy Grace.
