OH FOR GOD’S SAKE
12.07.09On Saturday night, Blake Lively and Kenan Thompson performed in a sketch that made fun of the unfolding Tiger Woods story (video below). Specifically, it addressed the allegation that Elin Woods attacked Tiger before he crashed his Cadillac. And because Rihanna was performing that night, the skit was tasteless, according to people who get offended for other people.
“We think, had the genders been reversed, ‘SNL’ wouldn’t make light of the potentially violent situation” noted PopEater in an article titled “‘SNL’ Lampoons Alleged Violence in Tiger Woods’ Marriage,” on Sunday.
Female-oriented site Jezebel called the sketch one of the show’s “obvious missteps… when you consider that Rihanna was the night’s musical guest.”
While over on The TV Squad blog, a writer called out the Rihanna connection…“Had the tables been turned and a man was suspected of beating up his wife, there definitely wouldn’t be a lighthearted sketch like this.” [Access Hollywood]
Three things: 1. A parody of something is not a statement that something like domestic abuse is okay, and the fact that female-to-male violence flips the gender stereotypes is precisely why it’s (theoretically) funny. 2. Let’s let Rihanna decide what’s inconsiderate to Rihanna. 3. By far and away the most offensive part of the sketch is Kenan Thompson’s acting. Why don’t people get more upset about that? That guy’s terrible.

I was just watching the Staten Island Gossip Girl sketch and I forgot there was a scene where Kristen Wiig slaps Bobby Monyehan and he punches her before they makeout. LOL, what did Rihana think about that?
haha…what a silly concept that by watching…
//eye starts twitching
MUST…BEAT…WOMEN…
The underground music festival ad had me rolling.
God, Keenan Thompson sucks. I refuse to believe SNL can’t find a funnier black guy. Hold a fucking audition, for Christ’s sake.
the lack of dead hooker and coat-hanger abortion jokes in this comment thread is tasteless and inconsiderate considering that matt ufford is the founder of this site.
People who get offended don’t get humor anyway. Why were they watching SNL at all? Were they not expecting humor… oh wait.
Goddamnit when did your country become such a pussy.
Maria Shriver is pissed at the over-representation of husband-assaulting wives out there. Not all women are hot, two-iron toting Scandinavians, you know…
“Had the tables been turned and a man was suspected of beating up his wife, there definitely wouldn’t be a lighthearted sketch like this.”
No sketch would be needed, the story itself is comedy gold.
They are right. All of those OJ sketches in the 90′s were glorifying spousal murder. And Lance Ito.
If they really wanted to be offended they would have come to my house while I was watching to see me furiously beating (off to) Blake Lively and Rihanna.
More like Jeze-SMELL!
TV Squad’s tone was more uncomfortable than righteously indignant…which is a surprise. TV Squad has gotten so touchy and PC, and the commenters are even worse. Which is why I defected to Warming Glow.
