When the Winter Olympics get underway, Warming Glow won’t have much coverage beyond the opening and closing ceremonies; all the stuff about medals or Bob Costas’s reindeer sweater or whatever will be handled over at With Leather. But I wanted to share this 40-second promo for BBC’s coverage of the Games (watch below). It’s got art that looks like a graphic novel, an operatic score, wolves chasing a guy on skis, and no fewer than five different winter sports, including a scene where a monster encased in ice is defeated by the explosive power of curling. Yup: curling. It’s like an artsy version of the kick-ass Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks entrance video.
Meanwhile, on NBC: “…the story of one valiant biathlon competitor who refused to quit — even when she had leukemia.” Ugh. It’s like sports for people who watch “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

Despite that being an awesome intro, damn the Vancouver Olympic committee and it’s stupid decision to make the emblem an inukshuk instead of a totem pole or, you know, anything remotely related to BC. At least they got the mascots down right(whale/bear, sasquatch and bear/whale/thunderbird, and a Vancouver Island Marmot

On Stephen Colbert: I’d bet he’ll be covering the speed skating events. Mostly because of that thing with the US speed skating team, one of the head guys at the rink with a sense of humour said that if he wanted he could be appointed an volunteer ombudsman for the rink(only stipulation is that he wear a bright pink toque) With the rink picking up his room and board. (IIRC the US team claimed that they were denied ice time, the games committee fired back saying that the US team hadn’t actually requested any.)

I’m with Dr. Steve Brule and have CBC on my basic cable package. I haven’t watched US network Olympics coverage in decades.
Thank the heavens I live a half hour away from Canada. CBC’s coverage for the Winter Olympics is the tits.

@Strange Botwin: God I was hoping too that Colbert would verbally smack the shit out of Ebersol. It was a golden opportunity a la Stewart vs. Cramer or Stewart vs. Tucker Carlson (really Jon Stewart vs. anyone he hates).
Ebersol is an old douche who thinks the Olympics are the greatest thing on Earth while not having a clue how much the sports landscape has changed in the last ten years. No one under 40 cares about the Olympics, boxing or Jay Leno.

This is why I thank Jeebus every day for the DVR. I love the Olympics (winter slightly more than summer) but my hatred of Costas knows no bounds.

Last week, when NBC Sports Head Dick, Ebersol was on The Colbert Report, I was really hoping Stephen would pull out his gun, Precious, and take care of business.
Instead they formed an odd “partnership” that may result in Colbert doing some Olympic coverage for NBC. Except, it was probably just for show, because there is no way NBC can make such a smart move.
