FAREWELL, CONAN
01.23.10“And finally, I have to say something to our fans. The massive outpouring of support and passion from so many people has been overwhelming. The rallies, the signs, all the goofy, outrageous creativity on the internet, and the fact that people have traveled long distances and camped out all night in the pouring rain to be in our audience, made a sad situation joyous and inspirational.
“To all the people watching, I can never thank you enough for your kindness to me and I’ll think about it for the rest of my life. All I ask of you is one thing: please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism — it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere.
“Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen. I’m telling you: amazing things will happen.”

@ Pretzelman – Agree 100%. Fallon was in a tough spot, he wants to keep his job so he must please the overlord Leno but still wanted to give Coco his props. I think he nailed it with the Boyz II Men song and pouring out some Olde English
Loves Conan. He was awesome his last show.
However, WTF was Will Ferrell doing there? Was it supposed to be funny that his preggo wife was there too? Not funny. Dragged on and Ferrell stopped being funny years ago, once he became a parody of himself.
give me a break! wrong man, wrong network, wrong show, wrong time slot … what did you geniuses think was going to happen … I’m surprised it took this long for them to wake up and smell the vomit. Conan may be a great person, but prematurely booting Leno out simply to not “lose” Conan to another network has achieved just that result. I guess that’s why “stupid network exec” jokes never get old. ;-)
Oh and Fallon’s cold opening right after Coco was very classy and appropriate. Just funny enough to be entertaining and a great segway, but didn’t overshadow Coco’s moment.
True story: Just as I opened this story, my iTunes started playing Freebird. Just shuffled right to it.
Coco will rise again. Like Jesus. Or Batman.
My only bitch is that Triumph is now dead without his final swan song. That was a true crime.
/exactly what was the point of Ferrell’s wife being out there and doing nothing?
antcow, why wouldn’t Ferrell sing it straight? His voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.
you sound awful cynical Ed Ladle.
It’s Ferrell’s wife, Viveca Paulin.
Who was the pregnant hippie chic in the “Free Bird” finale? Looks familiar but I can’t place her.
I was also surprised that Will Ferrell played it pretty straight. I concluded that he was trying not to upstage Conan and the importance of the situation.
While I was maybe a little disappointed that the last bit wasn’t more over-the-top, I can’t complain given the quality of the last few weeks of programming.
at Danger: “Giving birth to Triumph” would have been awesome. Especially since Conan won’t be allowed to use his NBC characters on a new show, it would have been great if they brought more of them out in some way.
Still I’m very much nitpicking, these last two weeks of episodes have been Conan at his best.
Was I the only one who hoped the song ended with more shenanigans? Like, the pregnant lady “giving birth” to Triumph, who would then declare the episode to have been a touching, heartfelt tribute…for him to poop on.
Also, was I the only one ingesting peyote soaked in formaldehyde?
Oh, I teared up. I love you, Conan.
Side note to the side note. Nice.
I love conan, but I honestly didn’t quite get why will ferrell was singing free bird. That song is awesome and appropriate and they assembled an amazing bunch of guitarists, so why have a comedian sing it. If ferrell had really played it up, I would have understood, but he mostly just sang a straight version of freebird, Why didn’t they get a famous singer to do the song (Neil young was already there, I’m sure he would have enjoyed singing a Skynard song since he apparently is still a big fan of Skynard even though people lashed out against young thinking Skynard hated him, not realizing “Sweet Home Alabama” is supposted to be for a bigoted southern’s perspective not the actual opinion of Skynard.) (that side note got way too big).
Honestly though did I miss something or was ferrell playing it straight for most of the song? I think it would have been better If Ferrell had busted in at the end with a cowbell and then stripped and danced wearing the leprechaun outfit.
Or did I just not get what Ferrell was going for when he sang?
You have to be impressed with the speech Conan gave at the end. He definitely took the high road — very honorable.
Beck wasn’t raised as a Scientologist; he was implanted into a shell at the base of a Volcano by Xenu.
Beck didn’t become a Scientologist. He was raised as one.
Beck looked like he didn’t know where he was or what was happening.
Yeah, there’s a reason he became a Scientologist.
The video has been removed from YouTube, but fuck Hulu and NBC, I’d rather just remember it how it was last night than give their websites any more hits.
I both hate and respect how classy Conan was last night. I actually managed to get through the show without throwing anything at my tv.
gonna miss ya, fake talkin’ Bill Clinton
“NEEEE-HAAAAA!”
What a show. Really, what an awesome couple of weeks. Conan brought his “A” game throughout all of this and what’s coming is nothing short of an “Empire of Conan”. As was the buzz with Letterman last time… Conan has mass appeal written all over him. Now the rumor and speculation game will persist for 7 months. I got all money on FOX… if not Comedy Central.
Until then, I can’t wait for that show on Animal Planet with Andy as host and Conan as co host! What wacky hijinks will ensue???!!! Check it out tonight, right after Animal Cops.
Beck looked like he didn’t know where he was or what was happening. However, Billy Gibbons. I put Deguello on the platter immediately.
Conan was pure class. Bravo.
Some thoughtful words but he makes it sound like he’s dying. He just got the freedom to be funny in a million other forums if he wants. I’m looking forward to it.
Coco, I would never be cynical.
You didn’t say anything about vengeful, however.
I enjoyed the show but I just can’t fucking stand Will Ferrel. He was his usual horrible self in that last bit. Let’s hope when Conan’s new show start he doesn’t have Will Ferrel on again first and start another curse.
After everything that happened, that was a really classy way to go out. I don’t know what my expectations were, but Conan exceeded anything I could’ve imagined.
I’ll definitely watch when he resurfaces in 7 months.
Even my husband had a sudden case of the sniffles after that speech. And he didn’t even cry after he realized he’d agreed to spend the rest of his life with me.
I didn’a cry when me own father was hung for stealing a pig, but I’ll cry now.
