HOLY CRAP, THIS WAS REAL?
01.06.10This is so preposterous that I can hardly believe it actually happened in our world in this lifetime, but apparently this was an actual 1990 pilot for NBC that was made but (shockingly) never picked up. From the YouTube description:
A clip of the rejected TV pilot POOCHINSKI from an ABC TV special about failed TV pilots. POOCHINSKI cast Peter Boyle as a cop killed in the line of duty who returns to life as a talking bulldog muppet that reunties [sic] with his partner to take a bite out of crime.
I’m completely flabbergasted. In case video is disabled at your place of employ, you missed this exchange: “You’re a dog!” “I’m a COP!!!” And the latter line was delivered by a creepy bulldog puppet. And how did they get the name “Poochinski”? Did the dog decide to give himself that name? Or was that the last name of Peter Boyle’s character before he died? Because I don’t think Poochinski is an actual Polish name. Dammit, now I really want to watch this pilot! I have to know!

I guess no one remembers “My Mother the Car.”

You wanna know what’s worse? They must have got the idea from the 1990 Canadian show “Dog House,” which has the identical premise and actually DID get aired.
A cop and his dog get in a car crash involving electricity, killing the cop and transferring his personality into the dog. Ta dah! It’s Poochinski with a Canadian accent. And a German shepherd.
“This is RIDICULOUS!” So he really CAN see the obvious, excellent detective work!
Alf starred as the puppet dog. Cause he too liked to eat cats.
Think about it. For that crotch-biting shot, the puppeteer had to grab the guy’s junk. Probably repeatedly over several takes.
Obviously we all forget the brilliant Tequila and Bonetti.
“It’s touching”
“It’s poignant”
Then the dog farts.
Is the dog growing at 0:41 or cutting one?
Incidentally, there was a show about talking cats that aired in the late 90′s-early 80′s, for perhaps 3-4 episodes that is so rare, I can’t uncover it on Google. Not sure of the name, but I think it was on ABC. It was about a house of cats that talked to each other, where the people are secondary – like the muppets. A million Schrute Bucks to anyone who can find it for me.
This week on Poochinski: In order to catch an international jewel thief, Poochinski will have to become……a rapist.
when he bit that crook’s crotch, i spit taco all over my screen
-worth it
I love how people constantly bitch and moan about tv being the same old (lawyer show, cop show, remake of 70s show) but then you get a genuinely batshit insane idea like this and people moan about that. No wonder execs don’t like to try anything new. And yes, I remember reading TV Guide’s annual “New TV Shows” guide and thinking this looked great. I was 10!
It’s crazy the cop had such a dog like last name. If the cop’s last name had been Catinski, I wonder if the pilot would have gotten picked up?
Peter Boyle was in John and Yoko’s wedding.
Conveniently, Poochinski was the dead cop’s last name.
Peter Boyle was very close friends with John Lennon.
That explains his previous effort to star in “Walrus, P.I.”
The late ’80s and early ’90s. What a godforsaken time across the board. It was like living in a country run by a special ed class.
Peter Boyle was very close friends with John Lennon.
Maybe if he’s stop drinking dog water and chasing the cat, he’s be a better cop.
No, I’m talking about McNulty.
I’m pretty sure that guy is the groom in father of the bride.
The “look at me, I’m a dog” scene was Boyle’s best acting since Young Frankenstein.
Oh, and needs more ‘licking self’ jokes.
No record scratch?
/loses bet
This sounds better than Hank though.
Police Chief: Goddammit, Poochinski! You chewed the suspect’s loafers and crapped in front of City Hall! The mayor’s gonna have my ass! You need to learn to do police work without being so…so…
Poochinski: Ruff? *sunglasses*
YEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
From wikipedia: NBC did a television pilot based on the film [Turner & Hooch] in 1990. It aired in the summer with another dog pilot, “Poochinski” under the banner, “Two Dog Night”.
God bless the internet.
I thought all the good drugs were gone by the 90s. Guess not.
