Anyone who’s been to this site more than once is probably aware that Japanese TV owns the F out of the options we have here in the U.S. of A. Go ahead, peruse the Japan tag — you’ll get everything from Business Cat to a flock of airborne panties to the guy who shoots bananas out of his nose. I have fever dreams on peyote that seem dull by comparison.
Anyway, the clip below falls under Japan’s obsession with the cute, not Japan’s obsession with the terrifyingly perverted. Meet Chii, a shiba inu who smiles when her owner approaches. And if you don’t think dogs are perceptive about humans, note that Chii also narrows her eyes to slits when she smiles. Not cool, Chii. That’s kinda racist.

Tail wagging doesn’t always mean happy, it can be a submissive act and it can also be aggressive.
This dog is being submissive, there’s even a behaviour known as “submissive smiling” that some dogs will do as an appeasement to their masters.
I don’t know if the dog has been abused, but he’s very submissive to that one human.
Dogs don’t smile when they’re happy. People are anthropomorphizing his behaviour.

I definitely felt unsettled by seeing this video. It didn’t seem like smiling, it seemed like wincing or bracing himself for a smack. Like when your dog goes to the bathroom inside and you scold him…his ears go flat, winces, scared, he knows he did someone bad. I can’t help but wonder if his owner hits him and he becomes afraid whenever he approaches.

Dan/travis – The dog wags it’s tail while it’s ‘smiling’ at around 0:33, thanks for paying attention. Shiba Inu are absurdly smart dogs, the idea that she’s learned to smile like people isn’t too surprising. It looks like she really has to work to make that face.
