All right, I figure there are more than a few of you who want to talk about “Lost.” I’m setting this post to go live at 2 a.m. Eastern, so people on the West Coast have the same opportunity to discuss the two-hour premiere. For all those entering the comments section, please speak of spoilers freely. Johnny-come-lately spoilerphobes: stay out of the comments. (For those who didn’t watch and don’t care about spoilers, catch up with Inside TV’s recap. For those who did watch and want some discussion of Leibniz with their explanatory Cuse/Lindelof interview, check out PopWatch.)
My take? I continue to be amazed that people are awed by this show. I mean, it’s good television, but I’m astounded that more people don’t recognize the lazy writing devices (the Juliet-Sawyer conversation sticks out) and plot points that are ridiculously campy (I laughed through most of the temple scenes). I can’t help but feel that ten years from now, pop culture won’t look back so fondly on “Lost.” When VH1 inevitably makes “I Love the ’00s,” it’s totally going to make fun of the fans who reveled in the show’s mystique — and then you people will finally feel the sting of Godfrey’s sarcastic barbs.

finally saw the premier and came back here to say it was awesome, the fake locke/smoke monster was badass and i liked that he smacked the crap outta richard, losties at the temple was kinda *meh* I’m tired of these guys getting captured and pushed around, i wanna see them push people around and treat them like crap
i loved seeing boone again and charlie, and i think its gonna be a great season
So, @Patty Boots: are you single? Busy this weekend?
thats good, cause i had a lot of Canadian whiskey last night and was very mad at the world for some reason. I still think LOST is one of the most interesting shows on television, but i’m sorry, like i said: Respect (Ali G snaps). In condolence, i offer this link.

And take that comment with a grain of salt — I haven’t had any coffee yet today.
Fuck you, Chardie. Gray areas exist. It’s a good show, and I like it. It’s twat fans of the show like you who annoy me.
Seriously, just stop doing LOST posts. Dont get me wrong, I love LOST, but if your just gonna post a contempt filled blabber about it, why? Either you like it or you dont. Dont pander too “LOSTIES” because this is a “TV Blog”. Pick a side and stay there. I’m sorry too be so upfront with ya, (I’v commited half a decade of television viewing to this shit), I usually respect+enjoy your opinion on television, but ur just bein flim flam.
To answer the interesting question at the end of your post (which is ‘How will history remember Lost?’) I agree and disagree. I think Season 1 of Lost is one of the best single blocks of television from this past decade and I think if people ten or fifteen years from now give that a chance then they’ll stick with the story and maybe become just as ravenous over the plot, characters and myth as Lost fans are today. HOWEVER, given the tremendous backlash to Lost as a “serious” television show worthy of praise/awe/interest etc. that we’re seeing right now there is a chance that a stigma may be built up around it that will scare away newcomers in the years to come. This, I think, will all depend on how it ends. If generally people regard the end game as something satisfying then perhaps history will look on Lost kindly but if it pulls a Dallas, St. Elsewhere or X – Files (i still can’t believe that ended with a clip show) then I definitely don’t think people will look on it fondly in the future. It’s pretty simple right now though, if you buy into what’s going on thus far you are loving what’s happening on the show. If you don’t then it just seems the worst kind of ridiculous. There are no casual fans of this show, it’s just impossible to watch it that way.
Scratch that, I find this PREDICTABLE Lost backlash underwhelming. Beg pardon.
I find this Lost backlash underwhelming.
Duality’s the name of the game.
YES! Finally someone that agrees with me. I watch the show but I laugh and roll my eyes -very- often while watching. The intricate time travel plots just don’t hold my attention, because I don’t care enough about these characters. At this point, I just want to see it through to the end. Yet everyone I know at the office just LOVES the show and anxiously await every episode. The show is underwhelming.
Sweet, I made it onto the Facebook pic, I feel like a celebrity!
I hope it all ends with Pam waking up to find Bobby in the shower and then a guy comes out of the bathroom in a members only jacket and looks at them funny and then everyone goes to jail for violating the “Good Samaritan Law”.
I hope every dies in the end, just like the way it should have been for battlestar. None of this they lived happy ever after since person x died so everyone else could live.
People that read too much into every single detail are going to be very disappointed at the end I think. There is no way every question will be resolved which was proved from last nights episode…they answered pretty much nothing last night and there is only….what? 14-15 more episodes left? I Still enjoy the show though.
This isn’t even one of the ten best shows on TV right now. Henry Rollins would Nazi-rape the shit out of it because he does not respect it as an equal.
I’m still a bit confused with the inclusion of Desmond and the absence of Shannon (Boone’s sister) on the “alternate reality” plane. Are they foreshadowing that by destroying the island they have set in motion an entirely new destiny for each character? …Or did the chick that played Shannon want too much money so they wrote her out of the show?
Lost is fer fags
So in the alternate timeline, when it’s SUPPOSED to be 2004 again, they could’ve worked on the hair a little more.
I mean, come on, Charlie never had short hair until after he died.
Continuity, people.
I Can’t decide who I want to bang more, Kate or Juliet.
The show is fine but they need to spend some time on the dialog though, its pretty base.
Not sure how they can resolve everything in the episodes that are left when the premier basically introduced a hole boat load of Wha???? moments. I’m holding out for “retarded kids dream” as the final explanation for everything.
I think it is possible to enjoy the show, without trying to read too much into the philosphy of it. Holy Crap, it is just a TV show nice entertainment, although probably the same thing a bunch of people said 2,000 years though about a book called the Bible
PS: I started watching it at 9:40 on my DVR and finished at 11:05 and skipped all the commericals, and yeah there were a lot
Also, my theory on the boring alternate reality? That reality, created when they screwed up the island’s unique electromagnetic blah blah blah, is highly unstable and will eventually need to be destroyed. Also, I think that evil Fake Locke guy escaped in that reality, so, although it might seem better at first, it’s actually worse than if those folks never went to the island.
/nerd
But, yeah, the romantic subplots on the show are always the weakest part. But it’s on ABC, so you know they have to throw some cheesy stuff in there.
Yeah Im nutso about it, and I understand that we get a little crazy, but its all in good fun. At least we get some mental stimulation…most people are zombies that watch shows where they dont learn a damn thing. This kinda makes you think outside the box. It doesnt hurt anyone to use their brain a little.
It was mostly a fine episode if you ever wondered what happened if the plane initially landed instead of crashing. If everything past the first 2 minutes of the pilot episode was boring to you, then you would have liked a majority of the first 2 hours this season.
See, some of us crazies have a sense of humor about it.
But, holy crap, do I love the crap out of this show.
I was really hoping the plane would land in LA to a surprise zombie apocalypse where the only way to survive was to have 2-4 shotguns handy and a itchy trigger finger.
After that didn’t happen, I lost interest.
“The island you knew is now……. under water… wwwwwwoooooo *jazz hands*” Guh, bring back the polar bears
This was perfection. Enjoyed every second of the premiere. I do notice some hokey stuff but this shit is once in a life time. Fucking love it.
My favorite part was when I was drinking and took percocet before the episode started and cared more about talking to my cat than actually paying attention to what was going on. We’ll see if DVR proves me right.
I, for one, welcome John Lennon to the show. I also dug how a commercial featuring a cover of “Imagine” came on right after he was on screen.
I’m not gonna lie, when Bugsy from The Perfect Storm showed up as the translating hippy, I jizzed in my pants a little.
Ya, i too found the alternate timeline story to be kinda uninteresting up until Locke and Jack became BFFs suddenly. Without any context as to what it all means, it all looks kinda inane when compared to the insane happenings on the island. High five to fake Locke talking shit about real Locke near the end though… pretty awesome.
Anyways, I dug how we saw two ninja kung fu moves out of nowhere in the last 20 minutes… COINCIDENCE? eh, probably.
Also, Damon and Carlton were on the Jimmy Kimmel show right now and they flat out said that Sayid won’t be Jacob. They also gave a bunch of other direct answers… very uncharacteristic of them.
Yup, I’m stoked this is back. Yay for dorking out. So what if the show appears to pull plot twists and character motivations out of its ass every now and then… I don’t need compelling character drama ala Mad Men and the Wire all the time for a show to be especially awesome.
I’ve never been one to go all fanboy over LOST, but the show has always managed to maintain my interest in spite of ridiculous plot devices and insane twists.
That being said, at around 10:45 I found myself praying for the episode to just end already. I don’t know if it was the insane number of commercial breaks in the second hour or the fact the alternate reality plane storyline dragged ass, but those last 15 minutes leading up to the ZOMG TOTALLY UNEXPECTED ENDING!!!!1!11! were just excruciating.
I think that Season 6 is going to ultimately decide how the series is remembered over time. Are these guys (Cuse and Lindelof) smarter than we give them credit for, or were they just making shit up as they went along. Time shall tell.
all jokes aside… that was an amazing episode.
now I’m off to go re-read all the Soren Kierkegaard i read in college and see how it all ties into tonight’s episode. I’m pretty sure i skipped the chapter about the shapeshifting smoke monster back then.
God Help Us All….
“When VH1 inevitably makes “I Love the ’00s,” it’s totally going to make fun of the fans who reveled in the show’s mystique — and then you people will finally feel the excruciating humiliation of Godfrey’s sarcastic barbs.”
Too late Matt. VH1 couldn’t even wait for the decade to get over before unleashing Godfrey on the masses.
