In good news for good shows, the first episode of FX’s “Justified” was the most-watched series premiere for the cable network since “The Shield” debuted in 2002. Based on Elmore Leonard stories and starring Timothy Olyphant as a throwback lawman in modern-day Kentucky, the show garnered 4.2 million viewers — a definitive success for a cable series. (For additional reading, check out the A.V. Club’s interview with Olyphant.)
My take? I’m glad you asked. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Olyphant shines in another role that requires him to be restrained and unflappable — and that’s not a complaint about the roles he chooses. (In general, more men need to act like the protagonist in an Elmore Leonard story.) It’s not perfect; I could quibble with details — the marshals choosing to use pistols after being attacked with automatic weapons, the neo-Nazis looking more like Hollywood actors than actual rednecks — but it’s worth it to watch Olyphant saunter around and permeate the show with his badassness. The New York Times called it “‘Burn Notice’ with more soul,” and it’s an apt description: a restrained compliment, but high praise in its own way.

BOOOOO. This show was predictable, lame and BORING.
I like how they keep using the word “justified” in the dialogue, just like how McNulty would always say things like “we’re gonna catch them on … the wire.”
I’ve been in a firefight. My friend and I got pretty drunk and assaulted each other using bic lighters. Took him 3 months to grow back his left eyebrow.
Anyway, just finished watching the whole series of Deadwood, which was amazing. Will watch this when it gets going.
@FH: Nope, they opened the trunk of their SUV and pulled the small arms instead of ARs/shotguns. And anyone under fire with a rifle needs to be returning fire, not asking his pistol-toting comrades whether he should shoot to maim or kill.
Don’t make me ask for a show of hands of who’s been in a firefight.
Not to nerd out, but they only started with pistols simply as a delay tactic. Once they wanted to end it, homeboy brought out the sniper-scope rifle and winged the fat guys.
And I want that southern tart with the 12 gauge inside of me.
And while you’re at it, stop undressing me with your eyes.
Jeez, Red and Smello.. could you all stop objectifying the opposite sex for just a minute….?!
Walton Goggins was involved with both shows. COINCIDENCE?!?
CG, 3:10 to Yuma was a good EL adaptation.
Based on the premiere it seems like they used Out of Sight and Get Shorty as benchmarks for good Elmore Leonard adaptations, as opposed to… well pretty much every other EL adaptation.
Anyway- I fucking loved it.
tune in next week when Olyphant rolls up in his “Cadillac of minivans.”
The other similarity with Burn Notice? Both have leading men to whom I want to do dirty, dirty things.
The exposition was almost laughable in some places, but I can deal with that to stare at Olyphant for an hour each week.
If you’ve never read anything by Elmore Leonard I suggest that you do.
took some time to get into it… but i’m glad they got the set up over with because those things always drag on for too long
Does the Billy Bob Teeth guy with the shotgun get one to the dome? WAIT WAIT DON’T SPOIL IT…
