‘Party Down’ Is Really Good
04.21.10Ordinarily I’d save this for the Weekend Preview on Friday, but I like “Party Down” so much that I want to talk about its excellence with enough lead time for you to add Starz to your cable package in case you’re one of those fat cats with extra money to spend on things like premium cable and designer drugs.
I ended up watching Season 1 of “Party Down” On Demand well after Season 1 ended, and I couldn’t believe that such a perfect comedic gem was tucked away on Starz. And even though Jane Lynch has departed for “Glee,” Season 2, debuting Friday, delivers the same smart laughs according to the Chicago Tribune:
[T]his well-crafted show about caterers waiting for their big Hollywood break is set among the disillusioned, the disappointed and the dysfunctional. Much of the comedy comes from the characters realizing that they are waiting for opportunities that may never come.
[The show] remains light on its feet, thanks to its nuanced characters and its careful use of both irony and sincerity. Though it takes a while to integrate a new character played by Megan Mullally, Season 2 confidently builds on the successes of Season 1, and from about Episode 5 onward, “Party Down” takes its place as one of the most consistently entertaining shows on television.
A lot of people like “Entourage” because, they claim, it so perfectly captures the culture of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. Those people can go eat a gigantic helping of spotted dick, because “Party Down” is a much more realistic portrayal, featuring struggling artists who came to L.A. with a dream. Some of them keep their dream alive by being delusional, some have given in to cynicism, but everyone’s had a small enough taste of success to stay in L.A. — yet not enough to quit their catering job. Anyone who’s seen both shows and still prefers “Entourage” played lacrosse in high school.

The only drugs I need were designed by God or the tweaker cooking up in the basement of my apartment building.
Holy crap… is that Ken Marino?
I didn’t even know this show existed, honestly.
I may swap Starz for HBO.
/that last sentence I wrote just blew my own mind
Party Down is high-larious.
Are we having fun yet?

Unless you’re one of the twelve people on Earth without a Netflix subscription, you should be able to stream that shit as soon as it comes on real television. (Don’t completely quote me on that, though; I didn’t watch Party Down S. 1 until after it was over, but I *did* watch Spartacus – another Starz show, and yes I’m gay hawhawhaw – in “real time.”)
@3000- I am indeed one of those 12 people. I don’t watch more than a movie or two a month, tops – and that’s usually spur of the moment when I’m leaving a grocery store with a “Redbox” thingy outside….
Ken Marino, Ryan Hansen, Adam Scott. They just need to add Teddy Dunn and Percy Daggs, and they could rename it “Party Down, Starring the Secondary Cast from Veronica Mars”
@Steve — Not a surprise, as “VT” creator Rob Thomas is also behind “Party Down” (along with Paul Rudd + 2 others).
Also, Adam Scott was the best part of Step Brothers, and you TV geeks already know he’ll be joining “Parks and Recreation” next season.
I should point out that in addition to being a delightfully hilarious comedy, this show also occasionally includes naked breasts.

I’m another one of the 12. It’s a little odd that almost 17% of all Earthlings w/o a Netflix account would be Warming Glow commenters, no?
The first two episodes of season 2 were leaked two or three weeks ago. Pick your favorite torrent site and have at it.
Oh, and has anyone else noticed that Fred Savage has been directing some pretty high quality material lately? Party Down, Always Sunny in Philadelphia…I never thought I’d describe myself as a fan of his work, but here I am.
It is a good show. I saw it on Netflix on demand just recently and I really enjoyed it. I do wish Jane Lynch was coming back, though. You don’t get to seem many women get to play a character like that.
Also, I played lacrosse in high school. I was terrible at it, though.
Found a site called tvduck.com that has Season 1 episodes.
/also no Netflix account
I’m just still shocked that you don’t like Curb, but at one point said “Tosh.O is the greatest show on TV.” I just dont get it.
If not for the intimidating masculinity of her husband (Nick Offerman/Ron Swanson/Duke Silver), I would tell all of you about my longtime desire to do horrible and beautiful things to Megan Mullally.
@ILovePaleHoseandPaleHos
@Danger Guerrero
Make that 25%! I am number 3 without Netflix. Who has time to watch all those movies? My roommate has Netflix, and I haven’t once watched or asked him to get a movie for me.
Found a site called tvduck.com that has Season 1 episodes.
TVDuck is nice, but they have tons of links that are invalid. Try NinjaVideo. It’s less sloppy, and no bad links.
thanks Gonzo
Also, enjoyfreetvshows.com looks pretty good.
Why am I a little scared to take video advice from someone named Gonzo promoting a website called “NinjaVideo”?
Thanks for those tips, guys.
Not bad, UU. not a lot of shows and it seems the streams come from MegaVideo, which has a time limit. I sometimes pay the 10 bucks for unlimited Megavideo feeds.
@ILovePaleHoseandPaleHos: haha. A few tips. Sometimes the ads cause Chrome to throw up a red flag about a bad site. I have always ignored it, and my Norton doesn’t ever tell me they captured a virus.
One other thing, the streams are very good to great. Yet sometimes, it tends to skip. Perhaps once an episode it skips, but it hasn’t ruined the experience for me yet. Plus, can’t complain about free.
Not a fan of their movie downloads. THey always seem to take forever to buffer. But the TV show feeds are terrific. (I suggest waiting for your show to buffer for an optimal viewing experience.
and my Norton doesn’t ever tell me they captured a virus.
meaning, the site doesn’t give me a virus. My Norton has always been very very good to me.
I caught this on Netflix and was very impressed. Plenty of snarky humor and interesting characters to keep the similarly themed story lines propelled each week.
And it will BLOW your mind, once you realize where you know the now attractive brunette lead (Lizzy Caplan )from.
Hint: Janis Ian is a dike
@Strange Botwin
Lizzy Caplan was naked (a lot) this past season on “True Blood”
@ Strange Botwin
“Too gay too function? That’s only ok when I say it.”
Never fuck with me on Mean Girls trivia.
“Party Down” is, without a doubt, the best comedy on TV right now.
I just caught the porn awards and the high school reunion episodes this weekend for the fourth or fifth time, and still caught new bits.
I like Party Down, but just like with Curb, I can’t watch more than one episode at a time. Don’t know why.
/also doesn’t have Netflix
Maybe Ken Marino would be a more successful caterer if he didn’t run in the room and say “I’m gonna stick my balls in it” to the diners.
Yeah, this show came out of nowhere for me too, someone recommended it and I watched the entire first season with a lot of pot. Pay cable is the place for comedy, because as we all know, swearing and tits improve everything.
fancast.com has the 1st and 5th episode of the new season up in HD with no ads. Schmoove out!
/drops mic onto the floor.
i found out about this show completely by accident after going on imdb to see what Martin Starr had lined up. It is now one of my favorites. Not too excited about Megan Mulloudvoice, though.
Please report any bad links on TVDuck by clicking the thumbs down button. We have also made sure Party Down episodes are now up to date. Thanks!
