Pwned.
07.06.10A few weeks back, Jezebel did some serious sexism-baiting with a post titled The Daily Show‘s Woman Problem. I can’t say whether it raised a legitimate criticism of “The Daily Show” as an equal opportunity workplace, but I can tell you this: what it sounded like was ugly girls being mad that Olivia Munn got a job on the show.
Today, the women of “The Daily Show” — all 31 of them, 40% of the show’s staff – fired back with a missive directed at “People Who Don’t Work Here.” An excerpt:
We feel lucky to work in a meritocracy where someone with talent can join us as an intern and work her way up to wherever her strengths take her. But also because it’s an environment that supports our being more than just our jobs. The Daily Show (to an extent few of us have seen elsewhere) allows us the flexibility to care for our families, pursue our own projects, cope with unexpected crises, and have lives outside the show.
Wow, it sounds like the opposite of working for Gawker Media.
Also, regarding some of the attacks on Jon Stewart and his character…
Jon’s not just a guy in a suit reading a prompter. His voice and vision shape every aspect of the show from concept to execution. The idea that he would risk compromising his show’s quality by hiring or firing someone based on anything but ability, or by booking guests based on anything but subject matter, is simply ludicrous.
But what’s he really like? Well, for a sexist prick, he can be quite charming. He’s also generous, humble, genuine, compassionate, fair, supportive, exacting, stubborn, goofy, hands-on, driven, occasionally infuriating, ethical, down-to-earth and–a lot of people don’t know this–surprisingly funny (for a guy brimming with “joyless rage”). How else to describe him? What’s the word that means the opposite of sexist? That one.
In conclusion, *REEERRR!!!* Maaaaaaaake ouuuuuuuuut!

needs a “maaaaaaaaaake ouuuuuuuuuuut!” tag
*Fighting urge to scream “Tits or GTFO” at his workstation*
Olivia Munn is talented, intelligent, and I want to dip my bald head in oil and rub it all over her body. Why would the last part of that sentence undermine the first?
I concur
Also, a platform of “Putting Jezebels In Their Place” can still get you elected in some Southern jurisdictions.
I didn’t get the complaint about Munn not being worthy of the job. Every time I’ve seen her she’s been funny and smart in the “I’m acting dumber than I am, but I know it and you know it” kind of way. Master baitery on Jezebel’s part.
Whoa, who’s looking after the canteen whilst all these bitches are loafing about on set?
That’s a ton of make up artists!
Why would they put Munn way in the back like that? Sex sells, people!
90% of those broads might be dudes.
By the time they get to the candidates of the Daily Show, the herd has been thinned by the larger societal forces.” Of the greater talent pool of comedians, she said, “All that’s left are white men and Aziz Ansari.”
May favorite part of the article.
Isn’t that the girl from Flight of The Conchords just left of the desk?
^ (@ Booty) Yes it is. Woo, Kristen Schaal! Loved her in Toy Story 3. :)
I missed the part in the Jezebel piece where the called anyone on The Daily Show a “sexist prick.” Also, the piece seemed fairly balanced, and had people from The Daily Show who were complimentary to Jon Stewart and did not feel there was any sexism on The Daily Show. Furthermore, the letter kind of proves the point of the Jezebel piece: out of the 30+ women listed in the piece, five were writers or correspondents. This may seem like a big number because everyone knows women aren’t funny, but it seems rather small.
That’s a lot of typing for someone who should be baking.
That’s great and all, but now it’s time to get your Bi*** A** back in the kitchen and make me a pie.
this is because JEZABEL DOESNT ACTUALLY RESPECT WOMEN. They don’t know what they are talking about when they fucking spout off, they’re just little shit stirrers who are giving the already battered term feminism an even more awful stink than it already has.
Most of the time I don’t agree with Jezebel. But, this time they are spot on. The Daily Show response did not really address Jezebel’s point about the lack of female writers and on screen correspondents. Look at the titles of the women who signed the letter. Of the 31 that signed, only two are a writer or correspondent. I would also note that Kristin Shaal who is a occasional correspondent did not sign. So in a way, this letter proved Jezebel’s point.
