As much as AMC is pushing its new series “Rubicon” (with sneak previews after the “Breaking Bad” finale and “Mad Men” premiere), the next big hit from the cable channel may be a show with a winter 2010 premiere: “The Walking Dead,” a zombie series adapted from the comic of the same name, generated some of the biggest buzz at this weekend’s Comic-Con, as judged by giddy fanboy reactions here and here, not to mention the genuine excitement from the more journalistic James Hibberd from The Hollywood Reporter.
Below, I’ve got a pretty decent bootleg video of the trailer shown at the panel, plus — for the geeks who are REALLY bored — a lengthy video of highlights from the panel. As much as I hate to agree with nerds, the trailer looks pretty promising, with characters, scenes, and images that look like they were lifted from the pages of the first trade paperback and colorized.
Uh, not that I’ve read the comic, of course. *does bicep curls*

I’ll cop to reading the comic. So long as the writers fix the occasionally crappy dialogue, this is going to fucking govern the airwaves once it hits. Main characters die off or are maimed to shit left and right. It’s like broadcasting from a violent retirement home.
It’s no Night of the Comet but this looks solid. Plenty of life in the Zombie genre yet.
AEVC, just as long as someone kills the musically talentless Rob Zombie.
night of the comet? Taint heard that one in years…good reference.
Stargate Studios is doing the effects for this, and they always do really good work. Should look really good.
that pontiac is tits
Holy crap that looks quite watchable indeed!
Fuck and Yes, I might have to get the comic book (I’m a Johnny-come-lately comic book nerd, that way I don’t have to sift through the crap)
Oh, good. More Zombies. Weehee. How orriginal. Will there be an over-the-top Macho suvivalist? A wise-cracking teenager? A hot babe with a gun? Sounds like nothing we have seen before! Mouth-Breathing Retards!
Thats how 28 Days Later started, only it was a bicycle accident instead of getting shot
The Walking Dead bucks all the trends you mentioned Pug. Because it’s serialized, that macho survivalist gets his story told. It’s very character driven. Each issue may or may not have a zombie action scene, but The Walking Dead is the FIRST book us nerds read in our stack. Bonus for us if the show is as good as the book.
I think that the show needs to keep a main protagonist (or 2 or 3) around longer on the show than they did in the comic book. Viewers will get attached to characters, and killing off good characters left and right will wear on people and they will get tired of turning in and seeing their new favorite person die every week.
What is the go with the beagle in the lobster suit? Is that for laughs, or part of the cast?
