Tonight, HBO will air “Monica & David,” a documentary about two married people with Down syndrome (watch the trailer below). It won the award for best documentary at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and by most accounts it’s a complex and intelligent look at an unusual search for love and independence. From Boston.com’s review:

While the joy in the church is palpable, while the love that Monica and David’s family feels for them is fierce and powerful, the future gnaws. What will happen next for the newlyweds, whose intellectual disability prevents them from true independence? In their 30s, they’re not equipped to live alone or get jobs, and they depend on the devoted and willing care of Monica’s mother and stepfather. In one scene, Monica and David hold a baby, wondering about whether they will ever become parents. We can feel the impossibility of the situation, and the fragility of their hopes.

Anyway, it looks pretty good, if you’re into documentaries and development disabilities. Oh, and for anyone who’s offended by my use of the word “retard,” please spend an inordinate amount of time chastising me and listing the reasons why it’s wrong. Because I’ve never been told that it’s wrong before, and an imperious lecture will correct the great injustice I’ve wrought upon the Down syndrome community. I look forward to your letters.
