Ricky Gervais hosted last night’s Golden Globes Awards, a repeat gig from last year because everyone liked how he gleefully made fun of Hollywood. He returned this year with a promise to be meaner, and he followed through (watch the monologue below), resulting in a lot of dripping gashes getting offended. FilmDrunk has a breakdown of which media outlets have twats for TV reviewers, but the gist of it is this:
“Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure,” a member of the [Hollywood Foreign Press Association] told me, adding that Ricky’s relentlessly mean shtick could have even larger consequences. “For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain.” [...]
“Ricky blew it big time. It’s one thing to make fun of celebrities but it’s another to make them totally uncomfortable,” an insider tells me. “People in that room were furious but had to sit and smile because the camera’s were on them. It really says something when several people who attended said they would have felt safer with Kathy Griffin hosting.” [Popeater]
What a steaming pile of pig sh*t. The overblown media reaction is only going to coddle these delicate egomaniacs even more. Make them sit there and take their lumps like adult human beings, maybe it’ll make them think twice before mailing in crap like The Tourist.
Here’s Gervais’s opening monologue.
Again, the mainstream media doesn’t know how to report about comedy. They report that the crowd hated the monologue, but there are plenty of laughs among the groans. Besides, I read the groans as surprise that Gervais would take on such targets as Angelina Jolie and the HFPA, not disgust with Gervais. Humor is supposed to surprise people. (If you can’t watch the Hulu player, catch the clip at Gawker TV.)
Also, I thought Robert Downey, Jr.’s dig back at Gervais was done in good humor, not anger.
I thought that was well done. Thin-skinned people deserve to be stabbed. (Metaphorically, of course.) (*sharpens knife*)
Anyway, here are the TV nominees and winners:

Ricky Gervais brought to the awards shows what they’ve always needed — simulated cocksucking.
So, that “couple of gay Scientologists” joke. Was he talking about Jason Lee and Jeff Conaway?
I always thought I’d drop out of school immediately if I come into a life changing amount of money. My new plan is to stay in school and Gervais-up every answer I give in class by 500%. The man is my hero.
I turned on the golden globes for ten minutes, and it was the ten minutes where Katey Sagal won her award. Good timing, or greatest timing?
oof- as much as I’d like to think Downey Jr. has a sense of humor about the whole thing it sounded like he was genuinely pissed off.
Gervaise I’m sure could give a flying fuck about ever being nominated for or hosting the golden globes again so good for him being probably the last time the golden globes will ever be relevant or entertaining.
“For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated.”
It’s refreshing to hear someone associated with an award committee being so open about their biases. I’m sure the evening’s winners are happy to know it wasn’t based on their performances/talent, but rather how much they played nice.
Its amazing how people hype up and look forward to ricky being outrageous and out of control on hosting duties and then condemn him for being outrageous and out of control on hosting duties.
This would’ve never gone down had Poochie hosted.
Gervais was great, but I really enjoyed RDJ fake reminiscing about sleeping with the comedy actress nominees. That sort of creepiness really strikes a chord with me.
Al Roker: What have you been up to, Helena?
Helena Bonham Carter: I spent last night in a ditch.
Go figure, an award show that recognizes Jim Parsons and that homo from Glee don’t get comedy.
Did no one else see Jane Fonda’s nipple?
/awkward
The look on Robert’s wife’s face was awesome, after he made a joke about making her watch him bang Angelina Jolie.
Chris Colfer seems like a sweet kid, and it’s nice that he’s successful. But better than Eric Stonestreet? Haaaaaale no.
After reading her twitter, my love for sofia vergara is reaching into alison brie/corgi territory…..and I am reaching into my pants.
I think if Ricky throws a large sum of money their way, the Foreign Press would surely change their mind about not nominating him ever.
@Chazz – Gervais and Downey Jr are actually pretty good mates and I think he was expecting it.
I didn’t see the show and can’t watch Hulu, but from what I’ve read, Ricky warned them he would do this. They got what they paid for. A ruthless comic who will push the limits.
what? no love for January Jones??

Funny that Gervais catches hell for some cruel jokes while RDJ can joke about screwing five women, including one young enough to be his daughter, in front of his wife and their husbands nobody says a word.
That banner pic is spectacular. Well done.
De Niro’s reaction to the oral sex joke was priceless.
Kurt Sutter has lost points with me. Thought he was pretty cool but he just comes across as a twat in his twitter post:
‘if gervais wasn’t a brit, would’ve been ok to be a prick. but he’s still kinda an outsider, so it be like me making black jokes…not cool.’
Eh? Because he’s English he can’t rip Hollywood for being blowhards? Equal to racism?
They hired Ricky Gervais to host and then they were shocked that he acted like Ricky Gervais?
@smegga- I don’t know what’s worse; the asinine analogy he uses or the fact that Kurt Sutter is making insider / outsider judgments about the Golden Globes host.
Oh, so he just gets a pass? Like Milton Berle!

I thought he was funny. Not as funny as he thought he was, but funny.
Hopefully they’ll get someone funny next year like Dane Cook or Jay Leno.
Then why did the HFPA hire Mr.Gervais to host their show? They knew what they were getting.I think they’re enjoying all the hyperbole surrounding this issue. So he won’t be hosting next year?He already said he wouldn’t do it again. And none of his movies will ever be nominated? Isn’t that censorship and/or bigotry?
Even funnier about Sutter is that he’s butthurt that it was a foreigner making fun of Hollywood at an event sponsored by the foreign press.
What was the dig at Gervais??
If I ever hear the word “gash” on network TV it will no longer be cool. I will also blame it on you.
