Back in 2008, NBC made a pilot that adapted BBC’s “Top Gear” for an American audience, starring “Man Show” co-host and podcast master Adam Carolla. But NBC passed on the show, and now History is making the American ‘Top Gear” without him. Carolla will instead host “The Car Show” on SPEED, the first trailer of which is embedded below.
I’m not exactly a car guy — I moved to New York in part because I hate driving (or rather: I hate other people driving poorly) — but I can’t deny that Carolla does a good job of working his nasally charm in this trailer. At the very least, I found it more entertaining than the first trailer for the American “Top Gear.” Not that either is all that appealing to me. Comparing car shows to each other, for me, is like comparing Merchant-Ivory films. “Oh, well, I guess Remains of the Day is a little better than Howards End. But I’d still prefer to get tear-gassed than watch either.”

Didn’t Helena Bonham Carter get all kinds of naked at the ends of Remains of the Day?
I can’t take this show seriously because his last name shares a similarity to one of the shittiest (and probably most popular) Toyota ever made.

BEST DAMN CAR SHOW PERIOD
I’ll watch those Barrett-Jackson Auctions for six hours straight (which Speed seems to be well aware of). But then, my mind is probably broken.
Two thumbs up.
@George; would he be biased when reviewing a Toyota Carolla?
Tough to recreate the weird watchability of BBC’s Top Gear to begin with, but the History channel never gave themselves a chance when they didn’t involve Carolla.
Not sure I’ll end up watching this but I guarantee its 100 times better than the US version of topgear.
Wait til you see the pilot for TLC’s new show about a family of midget octuplets trying to deliver cakes in their classic cars.
@njpaNick – You are talking about Top Gear yes?
It started again over here on Sunday, and it was kind of disappointing. There was no first episode stunt or gag that got the series rolling like they usually do.
@Moose: it could burst into flames during starting, killing the occupants and it would be the best car he’s ever had the privilege to investigate.

Yeah, I think budget cuts are hitting them a bit (although they took that behemoth thing on a rampage in South Africa, so… who knows). The episode wasn’t BAD, but it wasn’t great either. And the production on the BMW 1M piece was driving me insane; a show known for being BEAUTIFULLY produced and they just went crazy with weird laser effects.
@Bobman – It’s not the money, I think they are running out of ideas. Last season’s premiere concluded with Jeremy driving a Robin Reliant a few miles and trying not to flip it. It was cheap, but hilarious.
If they do stuff together, then it’s good, but the stuff with Hammond in South Africa was lacking because the other guys should have been there as well.
I’ll still watch it every Sunday though.
Always find Adam entertaining.
Will never forget the time he hung up on a caller on the radio version of Loveline with the comment “Why are you calling us? You’ve got two guys who don’t care and a band.”
you moved to NYC b/c you hate other people driving poorly..now you get to take NYC death cabs everywhere…good thinking
I will watch if there is a ‘girls jumping on trampolines’ segment.
Vince Mancini is very excited for this
