Venn Diagram: HBO Explained
06.15.11No, the banner image does not explain HBO. The diagram below, designed by Dan Abramowitz at College Humor, breaks down all of HBO’s programming using three criteria: critical acclaim, violence, and f**king. It’s excellent. Have a look:
Of course, most of my favorite shows can be found at the intersection of all three circles. The real surprise here is that I apparently prefer violence to sex. Or maybe it just makes for better stories.

Big Love had virtually zero fucking, despite the theme of a dude who can fuck three ladies whenever he wants. But six feet under did have fucking, including strongly implied sister fucking, happy endings, and dude on dude action (I assume, since I closed my eyes).
Carnivale had some fine weird fucking. There’s some lazy up there.
Uh, The Wire had more fucking than any show I have ever watched beginning to end. My biggest complaint was having the sex slaves be seen (rightfully) as victims only to have two of em fucking McNulty as some kind of laugh.
Kima: Naked
McNulty: naked
McNulty’s ex: naked
Strippers and hookers and McNulty’s floozies: naked
Daniels: Naked
Ronnie: Naked
What about McNulty from The Wire? He did some banging.
There was also sex in “The Wire” and “The Pacific,” and “Generation Kill” received some critical acclaim, and “Sex and the City” clearly struck the same rib twice in succession yet produced two different notes.
It’s a stupid Venn diagram from College Humor, not a submission for a PhD in pop culture.
I don’t see ‘Arli$$’ in the chart.
Bored to Death is critically acclaimed? Kind of borderline. Maybe it needs a fourth category: hipsteral acclaim.
Oz won a Cable Ace award, fuckers.
I don’t remember that much sex in “John From Cincinnati.” Maybe we need a 4th circle for “incomprehensible nonsense.”
I don’t think it’s a stupid venn diagram, I think it’s a potentially very useful venn diagram that unfairly lies about TV sex. That should be illegal.
I think the bottom line is that HBO makes some good TV.
hired goons?
The Wire did need more fucking.
Every dipshit Entourage fan ever: “Bro it’s got hot sluts getting nailed bro.”
If I had to choose between seeing Christopher Meloni’s dong again or seeing the DA from The Wire naked, dong me up.
*flashes back to episode of obscure 50s TV show*
I still love you, Dream On.
Dane Cook’s Tourgasm had violence other than the violence it inspired me to commit on my love ones?
CuriousGeorger: You see Rhonda Perlman naked in Season 2.
Every dipshit Entourage fan ever: “Bro it’s got hot sluts getting nailed bro.”
Amen to that. You might have added a third “bro” to that sentence, but I’ll let it pass.
CuriousGeorger: You see Rhonda Perlman naked in Season 2.
Just like in Season 2 of Cheers with Rhea Perlman.
I left out the word “again” in an attempt to encourage myself to never see that alabaster atrocity in my mind, but thanks.
College Humor is overrated. And pretty much sucks. There, I said it.
/drops knives, exits death pit
Pretty sure Thrones has set the damn standard for fucking on HBO. Boardwalk Empire better follow suit.
What about Dream On? Martin Tupper FTMFW.
This sucks…also, I’m torn about the DA from The Wire, sometimes good, sometimes haggard…Furthermore, I’ve been noticing that there are a ton of porn chicks that are hotter than Lindsey Lohan…her future is doomed
Dream On did have some hot naked chicks
I would’ve liked some violence in Sex and the City, too. Especially on Miranda’s face.
Catherine Bell was naked on Dream On, Catherine “My tits cure cancer” Bell
Hired goons!
shitty diagram.
I am one of the few who liked John From Cincinnati from the start. Plus, Luke Perry!
Dream On did have some hot naked chicks
There was a fantasy scene with some secretary on that show that I saw once, for thirty seconds, nineteen years ago, and it is still seared onto my brain.
HBO programming is very simple to explain, Say Fuck Alot. There is the formula to all HBO shows :). http://www.dailystooge.com
From Ric The Real Stooge
Carnavale had sex between the male lead and Maude Adams, the female lead and her female best friend, the injured baseball player and the aging stripper, the priest and somebody (Hookers, if I remember correctly)… I think the difference between it (other than being unbelievably better) and True Blood is that TB has sex in every episode. Carnavale had it about every other episode.
Generation Kill may be the one that has stuck with me the longest for whatever reason. Probably because I had a cousin who played a small but vital role as one of the Marines.
Thank God there wasn’t any fucking in it though.
you should put lucky louie outside of the three circles
Some mistakes were made. I mostly categorized shows based on their chief elements (e.g., The Wire has fucking, but Entourage is ABOUT fucking); Critical acclaim, of course, is slippery and relative.
Also, please spell my name right, Matt.
