The first Digital Short, “Lettuce,” aired on “SNL” on December 3, 2005. It’s about Andy Samberg (one third of the Lonely Island, who wrote, directed, and starred in a majority of the Shorts) and Will Forte discussing the death of a buddy while chomping on, well, lettuce. It’s not very good; I remember watching that episode live and thinking to myself, “The hell is this?” Two weeks later, on December 17, Digital Shorts began to make sense. That’s when “Lazy Sunday” premiered and a sensation began.

But six-and-a-half years later, with 100 of them filmed and aired, it’s likely that the “SNL” Digital Short is no more. Rumor has it that Andy Samberg is leaving the show after this season, and one would assume that means the end of the idea that, honestly, rejuvenated the show (or at least made it relevant). The clips were intended to go viral; they often went viral, with “Lazy Sunday,” “Dick in a Box,” and “I’m on a Boat” being three of the Internet’s most popular and recognizable videos.

So, to honor Digital Shorts (which, sadly, haven’t been good this season), and “Lazy Sunday” in particular, here’s a list of the thing the Lonely Island has always done best: the 10 Greatest Digital Shorts’ Songs.

Reason: Adding “space” in front of a word = instant comedy. Space boobs? Classic. Space fart? Legendary. Space Olympics? Awesome.

Reason: White guys making fun of rap clichés shouldn’t be so funny. But “I’m on a Boat” works because rather than satirize easy targets like bling, the Lonely Island amped up every rap video stereotype. Instead of having sex with three beautiful ladies, T-Pain’s gonna f*ck a mermaid. It was nominated for a Grammy.

The Social Security Administration released their list of the most popular baby names in 2011 yesterday, and if it’s any indication of American culture, which it is, it means that we love our Kardashians and reality TV shows. Which we, SIGH, do. We also hate the name Brisa, for some reason.

[Kourtney] Kardashian, the reality TV star, gave birth to Mason in December 2009 following a heavily publicized pregnancy. In 2010, Mason jumped from No. 34 to No. 12. Last year, 19,396 baby boys were named Mason, an increase of nearly 4,600 [to #2), by far the biggest jump for any name.

The fastest rising name for girls: Briella, which jumped 394 spots, to No. 497. Briella Calafiore stars in “Jerseylicious,” a reality TV show about battling stylists at a beauty salon in Green Brook, N.J. She’s also in a spinoff called “Glam Fairy.” (Via)

Here are the following once-popular names I’d rather call my baby than Briella: Mabel, Bertha, Clarence, Mildred, Gladys, Poopy McGee (the 1890s were weird), Harold, and Adolf, a name I hope the Kardashians or shows that end with -Licious don’t ruin. I’ve got big plans for Adolf Kurp.

Sarcastic, scruffy everyman Adam Scott appeared on “Late Show with David Letterman” yesterday to discuss, among other things, the time he and “Parks and Recreation” co-star Nick Offerman were invited to a dorm party at Caltech. For some reason (because they’re cheap?), NBC regularly hosts “big, fancy parties” at colleges, and while walking the red carpet at Caltech, a bunch of students, after screaming “YOU SUCK,” asked if Scott wanted to party with them. He said, “Sure,” because who wouldn’t want to party with a bunch of drunken science nerds, and asked Offerman to join him, to “blow some minds.”

I won’t give away the rest of the clip, but needless to say, I’d party with Ben Wyatt and Ron Swanson any time. I mean, “party” as in drink beers, not the other way. Swanson’s masculinity intimidates me (it’s the mustache). Also, Adam Scott needs to finish every story by doing this:

America’s Got Talent (NBC, 8 p.m.) – Season premiere, now with more Howard Stern and less Piers Morgan. And yet: I would only watch this if Fartman makes his triumphant return to TV, and rips huge, juicy ones while standing in front of Howie Mandel’s face. That’s talent.

How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8 p.m.) – One-hour season finale. Marshall and Lily FINALLY have the baby they’ve been talking about since, like, the pilot, and Barney’s wife is revealed. This hasn’t been a great season of “How I Met,” but it’s still reliably charming and the only thing worth watching on CBS not called “The Good Wife.”

House (Fox, 9 p.m.) – Olivia Wilde returns as Thirteen. Expect a full GIF breakdown on Friday (though it will never be as good as this).

Two and a Half Men (CBS, 9 p.m.) – Season finale. Tonight’s episode has “Al-Qaeda!” in the title, so you know it’s going to be funny.

Smash (NBC, 10 p.m.) – Season finale. Hey, remember those incessant promos that aired during the Super Bowl? Those certainly were annoying. And, um, airplane food…(I got nothing, folks.)

One of the things we discussed last week was how Theon’s completely over his head. The little prick (who OF COURSE punches people in the balls) tried to come off as a big man in front of the proud, Stark-loving residents of Winterfell. But by the end of “The Old Gods and the New,” he let a wilding, mentally handicapped giant, cripple, and four-year-old child (and two direwolves!) escape his grasp. Last night’s episode, “A Man Without Honor,” begins and ends with that story as well, and Theon’s in no better shape. Even he seems puzzled by his own decision to tar Bran and Rickon (assuming those bodies were actually Bran and Rickon’s…) – his jerk face at episode’s end could have been subtitled with, “I’ve made a huge mistake.”

None of the show’s other characters are doing particularly well, either. Jaime (the man without honor) is still chained to a pole covered with his own sh*t, Robb’s falling in love with a girl he can never have, Jon’s penis is in direct opposition to his brain (and that’s before he’s surrounded by the Free Folk), Dany’s looking for dragons and getting no help from either Ducksauce or Pyat (can’t trust a warlock), Arya’s disguise is slowly wearing off to Tywin, and Sansa got her first period, meaning she’s ready to make babies, meaning she’s ready to have Joffrey inside of her, meaning EWWWW. Oh, and Irri, Alton, and 11 of the 13 are dead.

No one’s winning the “Game of Thrones” right now, except for maybe Stannis and his troops, matching ever closer to Lannister territory…

• The first notes I wrote down about the episode were, “Hodor, dicks, not being used,” which is coincidentally the name of my “Game of Thrones” spec script.
• I really want mutton.
• Tywin is the ultimate “character you should hate because they’re evil, but you like them despite yourself because they’re so damn charming, smart, and awesome.” Tyrion kind of fits that description, too. Jaime, as well.
• Speaking of: I was embarrassingly happy to see Jaime again. Near the end of the episode, when Cat enters his cage, I said out loud, “This scene’s going to be awesome.” I was watching it by myself.
• Loved how you could see Lady Brienne (but don’t call her that) watching Cat watching Jaime.
• “Most girls are idiots.” That scene was so good. Dude totally knows, too.
• Hey ladies, would you claw someone’s eyes out to see Jon Snow naked?
• Saying a person’s full name at the end of the sentence makes everything sound so important, Jon Snow.
• There was a lot of mom talk in this episode, especially in King’s Landing – did anyone else have to discuss getting their period with their tyrannical future mother-in-law, or just me?
• To put it bluntly, Robb and Talisa should just f*ck already.
• Can Dany get to the House of the Dying ASAP, please?
• Attractive Women of “Game of Thrones” Power Rankings: #5. Cersei, #4. Daenerys, #3. Shae, #2. Ygritte, #1. Talisa (If anyone says Sansa, you’re banned.)

“Community” fans, it’s time to start rooting for Whitney Cummings.

I know, my emotions are confused, too. But NBC has released its fall schedule (which we’ll discuss more later) for the 2012-2013 season, and “Community” has been moved from Thursday nights to Fridays at 8:30 p.m., where it will follow “Whitney.” As much as it pains me to say this: I don’t think it’s a bad idea, either. Now “Community” is away from “The Big Bang Theory” and the rest of the big boys on Thursday, and with its low budget, it could conceivably air quietly on Fridays for seasons to come. Plus, although “Whitney” didn’t get great ratings, it did OK. Maybe some Cummings fans (*shudder*) will stick around for “Community,” which will already likely get the same number of viewers it did on Thursdays — we’re quite loyal — if not higher because “Grimm,” one of the network’s few bright spots, follows at 9 p.m. Maybe, hopefully, possibly, etc.

So, yeah, I’m reaching for positives, but even I can’t find anything good in this:

NBC chief Bob Greenblatt has just confirmed what’s been an open secret in Hollywood: While “Community” has been renewed, lead producer Sony Pictures Television has not yet signed creator Dan Harmon to a new deal to exec produce the new batch of episodes. Harmon only signed a one-year deal when the show was renewed last spring, and insiders tell Vulture there haven’t been any intense talks just yet…So what happens if there is no deal? “Shows lose showrunners all the time and do well,” Greenblatt said. “We have to figure out at makes sense. I don’t have a specific answer for that yet.” (Via)

“SNL” was REALLY proud of its recent history during last night’s episode. Whether it was appearances from former cast members (host Will Ferrell, Will Forte), resurrecting old characters (George W. Bush, the Culps), or honoring milestones (the 100th Digital Short), very little felt new, especially in the first half.

They were so busy celebrating themselves, in fact, that they forgot to write any good sketches, Lonely Island excluded. You’ve got one of the funniest people on the planet as your host, a former cast-member at that, and the best the show came up with is bringing back one of his weakest recurring characters and whatever the f*ck was going on in “Broadway Sizzle”. At times, I actually forgot Ferrell (who, to be fair, seemed a little under the weather) was the host because he was absent so much of the time.

Don’t look so proud of yourself, Lorne. This was the most disappointing episode of the season.

“Veep” has made all other Vice President jokes obsolete.

There were three jokes going on at once (the announcers, including Will Forte, talking about tampons; lady golfers; and Will Ferrell hitting on people before making an announcement about O.J. Simpson), and none of them landed. Women playing golf is such an easy, endlessly funny topic, too! Heh, lady golfers.

At least this was dependently hilarious. “…with the skin of a sundried Gremlin and the hairline of a Puerto Rican Beetlejuice.” How has Liam Neeson not hosted “SNL” since 2004?

Despite myself, I laughed. It wasn’t doing anything new, but Lonely Island has created enough good characters that, fine, let it celebrate itself. Plus, they got Jon Hamm to hump Justin Bieber (as you’ve already seen), and it’s always nice to see Justin Timberlake with a box on his dick, Natalie Portman rap, and Michael Bolton dressed as a gay pirate. This video is gonna be posted to a lot of people’s Facebook Walls today.

Jay Pharoah must hate everyone. There were some funny ideas here (Doctor Silky Delicious, a wig wearing glasses, Usher as a pimp), but the sketch never coalesced into anything funnier than its general premise. At least we’ll always have the memory of Abby Elliott wearing this dress:

It took over 70 minutes for Bill Hader to make an appearance. That’s not cool. You know what else isn’t cool? This is likely one of Kristen Wiig’s final “SNL” sketches, and although she occasionally bugs me, she deserves better than, ugh, “Broadway Sizzle.”

I can’t wait until this season is over.

Fringe (Fox; Friday, 9 p.m.) – Season finale. “The team is pushed to its breaking point as it tries to stop a catastrophic event from happening.” Don’t worry, guys, you’ve already been renewed for season five. There’s no need to worry about the state of Friday nights on TV until next year.

SNL (NBC; Saturday, 11:30 p.m.) – Will Ferrell hosts, Usher performs, and I’ll have a recap up by noon on Sunday, most likely discussing how I wish Ferrell was still on the show.

Demolition Man (Telemundo; Sunday, 2 p.m.) – Give your mom the Mother’s Day gift of Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes grunting in Spanish.

The Simpsons (Fox; Sunday, 8 p.m.) – Ned and Edna get married. Maybe they can snag the Doobie Brother that Homer and Marge couldn’t?

Bob’s Burgers/American Dad (Fox; Sunday, 8:30/9:30 p.m.) – For the first time this year, the two best Animation Domination shows air new episodes on the same night. And it’ll be the last, because it’s the “American Dad” season finale. Dick move, Fox.

Desperate Housewives (ABC; Sunday, 9 p.m.) – Series finale. Goodbye irrelevant show about a group of awful women that no one’s watched or talked about, outside of the trial, since 2007. It’s been…fun? No, that’s not the word I’m thinking. Got it! “Awful.” Yup, that’s it.

Sherlock (PBS; Sunday, 9 p.m.) – I’ve read The Hound of the Baskervilles, but I don’t remember it involving genetically engineered dogs being used by the military. This show is awesome.

Game of Thrones (HBO; Sunday, 9 p.m.) – A character who hasn’t been seen since the first episode of the season returns, Dany receives an invitation to a certain House, and Theon continues to be a massive tool.

Mad Men (AMC; Sunday, 10 p.m.) – The episode’s called “Dark Shadows.” Is AMC cross-promoting with Tim Burton’s new movie of the same name? The answer: yes, of course. I’ve been saying for years that the only thing missing from “Mad Men” is gothic architecture.

Veep/Girls (HBO; Sunday, 10 p.m.) – To be fair, both shows are getting better every week. It’s just that “Veep” was already so good to begin with. Matt Walsh 4 Every Award.

The Borgias (Showtime; Sunday, 10 p.m.) – Oh yeah, this network. When’s “Homeland” back?

Why would anyone want to live in New Caprica or Winterfell or, worst of all, South Africa, where they play Dave Matthews Band songs non-stop? That sounds like torture, as are the songs themselves. Those ants can march straight to Hell, where they’ll see Robert California (or Bob Kazamakis) and his Eastern European gymnasts.

Anyway, are you guys happy that Leslie won? The fact that I am is one of the reasons why I love “Parks and Recreation” so much. There was little-to-no chance that she wouldn’t end up victorious, and yet, I still couldn’t help but smile like an idiot when Anne told her she beat Bobby by 21 votes. “Parks” has this ability to make the obvious enjoyable, and the world will be a darker place when it’s off the air.

As for “Community”: I also loved it (and ranked the fake plots here), but not everyone did. I like how the episode handled what happens when routines are disrupted, and how you begin to question not only your own future, but also your sanity when you’re outside your comfort zone. What’s the Greendale Seven without Greendale? Plus: the mental hospital fake-out was clever (Garrett’s deep voice was f*cking brilliant) and the jokes were strong enough to warrant a sequel to the show’s best episode, “Paradigms of Human Memory.”

“30 Rock,” as ever, was reliably funny, and here are the GIFs of the Week.
