GLAAD Gives ABC Family ‘Excellent’ Marks for Being Gay

08.03.11 Written by Matt

Every year, GLAAD does a study to see which of the networks and primary cable channels portray lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender characters. Last year, MTV became the first channel to win GLAAD’s “Excellent” rating; this year, ABC Family became the second, with 55 of its 103 hours of original programming including LGBT imagery.

Among the broadcast networks, The CW is tops with 33 percent LGBT-inclusive programming, followed by Fox (29 percent) and ABC (23 percent). Bringing up the rear is CBS with only 10 percent of LGBT-inclusive programming, receiving an “Adequate” this year, up from its “Failing” score last year.

Among the cable networks, ABC Family is followed by Showtime (37 percent), TNT (33 percent), HBO (31 percent), Lifetime (31 percent), AMC (29 percent), and Syfy (22 percent), which all received “Good” ratings. Like CBS, USA jumped from “Failing” to “Adequate” after upping its LGBT-friendly hours from 4 to 18. Failing cable networks were A&E and TBS. [TV Guide]

Good for GLAAD. I’m all for American TV representing American society. Except for fat and ugly people. Get back in your holes, uggos and fatties!

Warming Glow’s Summer TV Preview

06.01.11 Written by Josh

It's almost back, you guys.

Come summer time, the only thing worth watching on the Big Four Networks is…when does football start again? Unless you’re a fan of reality shows and sitcoms that weren’t even good enough to make it on the midseason schedule, Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS are all entertainment wastelands from June to August (the CW, too, but that’s year-round). Cable, on the other hand, is absolutely stacked, with both returning favorites (“Breaking Bad”!) and intriguing-sounding new shows (don’t make me regret calling you “intriguing,” “NTSF:SD:SUV”).

This is Warming Glow’s official summer TV preview, highlighting 25 shows, some great and some awful, but mostly somewhere in-between, that will keep you in the confines of your home instead of enjoying the warm weather and getting some much-needed exercise. (Also, before it’s brought up, “Beavis and Butthead” isn’t included because it doesn’t have an official premiere date yet.)

Sex Sex Sex Sex Sex Sex

03.22.11 Written by Matt

This is a video of all the times the word “sex” was used in a single episode of ABC Family’s ”Secret Life of the American Teenager:” a whopping seventy times for a show with about 45 minutes of content. Personally, I don’t have a problem with teenagers talking about sex that much, but I’m creeped out that the kid with Down syndrome says “sex” just as much as kinky minx Renee Olstead. Let’s leave the Down syndrome sex talks where they belong: on TLC’s new reality competition, “America’s Sexiest Retard.”

The Secret Life of the Gamma-Radiated Scientist

10.15.10 Written by Brandon

As if a show for the new jacket-and-yoga pants Wonder Woman wasn’t enough, Marvel and ABC are developing a TV return for the Incredible Hulk.  The last time he had a TV show it was the 1970s, Bill Bixby was a thing, and the best thing you could do was tear up Lou Ferrigno’s pajama pants and spraypaint him green.

Hulk is one of two projects that are priorities at Marvel Television, Marvel Studio’s TV division, which has been keeping a low profile since Jeph Loeb (writer of comic hits like “Batman: Back to the Well Again”) took the reins. The second hot property is Cloak and Dagger, which is being developed as a possible show for ABC Family.  In case you were wondering, Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger is about teens using supernatural powers to fight drug dealers and has nothing to do with teens using video games to defeat spies.

Worst case scenario: We get a terrible Hulk show starring a quality actor asked only to play “mad,” it gets canceled, and five years later they try again.  Best case scenario: we say nuts to the Incredible Hulk and make five-to-five thousand seasons of a Fin Fang Foom show.

What’s On Tonight: The ’90s Strike Back

08.17.10 Written by Matt

Melissa & Joey (ABC Family) — Series premiere. When I first saw the poster for this revival of ’90s teen stars starring in a rip-off of “Who’s the Boss?,” I laughed out loud. For more on this show, check out the abortion of a laugh track in the promo below.

Big Lake (Comedy Central) – Series premiere. Chris Gethard stars in the role abdicated by Jon Heder in this Will Ferrell/Adam McKay-produced comedy. Possibly good: Horatio Sanz and Chris Parnell co-star. Definitely bad: there’s a laugh track. (Note: Paste seems to think it’s a subversive gimmick.)

Louie (FX) — I’m going to be sad when this delightful season is over. To make amends for the atrocious “Melissa & Joey” video below, scroll down for my favorite exchange from last week’s episode.

White Collar (USA) — John Larroquette guest stars. You know, the other day, I was thinking how Neil Patrick Harris’s Barney on “How I Met Your Mother” is a 21st-century version of Dan Fielding from “Night Court.” And I love NPH, but no one can touch Larroquette in the role. Dan taught me most of how I interact with women. *gets slapped*

Shaq vs. (ABC) — Shaq gets in a cooking battle with Rachael Ray. Given her credentials, I like his chances.
