‘Scott Pilgrim’ Coming to TV

08.05.10 Written by Matt

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World looks like one of the cooler movies that will come out this summer, and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim will help promote it by airing an animated short drawn in the manga-inspired style of the popular comic book that started it all.

Titled Scott Pilgrim vs. The Animation, the cartoon will be shown at midnight on August 12 to promote the comic’s movie adaptation.

According to SlashFilm, the shorts are based on outtakes from Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Michael Cera and Allison Pill will reprise their roles from the film while Mae Whitman and Jason Schwartzman will voice different characters.

“We were approached by Universal to do something cool around the release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” said producer Jason DeMarco. [Digital Spy]

Slashfilm also has some early video of the cartoon, and it looks like it’s back story that’s taken from the second volume of the comic. Yes, I’ve read a couple of the comic books that I’ve taken from nerds along with their lunch money. It’s a pretty cool concept (the metaphor of fighting someone’s emotional baggage taken literally), but it’s not nearly as good as the nerds say it is. The manga art and lack of color makes it hard to tell characters apart, and the cuts between scenes can be hard to follow. In short, the movie’s going to be a lot better. Yay!

‘Ta-Da! Genital Formal Wear!’

08.04.10 Written by Matt

Embedded below is the trailer for Season 4.5 of Adult Swim’s excellent “Venture Bros.” Recently, I’ve been making fun of shows that do this half-season nonsense, and I like that the trailer is up front about the confusion that this can cause: is it Season 5? Season 4, Volume 2? Season IV.2A?

As much as I like the show, the real reason for me posting the video is the banner image. They call it “genital formal wear” in the video, but I prefer the term tuxpeedo.

Irreverent show to skewer popular film

07.13.10 Written by Brandon

Adult Swim’s “Robot Chicken” is readying a third spoof of the popular Star Wars franchise, this time with C3PO voice talent Anthony Daniels and High School Musical’s Zac Efron joining the cast.  “Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III” is expected to “riff” on all aspects of George Lucas’ sci-fi universe and, just like the two previous specials, have action figures kicking each other in the nuts.  The special will have thirteen different writers, because you can’t expect one guy to come up with something as funny as C-3PO going through a metal detector.

In addition to Daniels and Charlie St. Cloud, “Community” co-star Donald Glover and “Cleveland Show” co-creator Mike Henry will make their debut “Robot Chicken” appearances. Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Ahmed Best (Jar Jar Binks) will also return.

“We wanted to take the Star Wars universe and see if through the eyes of our Robot Chicken: Star Wars Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Gary the Stormtrooper,” said co-creator Matthew Senreich. “Yeahhhh!” he added, then continued playing video games.

Stop Trying To Deconstruct Steve Brule

07.13.10 Written by Jon Bois

I’ve never been a huge fan of Adult Swim programming, but I can’t deny that Check It Out! With Dr. Steve Brule is amazing television. As interesting as it is to deconstruct great TV shows, it’s sometimes refreshing to see a show that stubbornly refuses to explain or even justify itself. It’s just there. And John C. Reilly, who plays Steve Brule, non-explains it perfectly.

ESQ: What about your miniseries on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule? Where’d you come up with the assertive, borderline mentally retarded character you play as the show’s host?

JCR: I just showed up with my costume and started channeling that guy. I don’t know where he came from. I find the less I say about Steve Brule the better. I think of him as real, and anytime I start to analyze him, it just gets really boring.

ESQ: And it’s entirely improvised?

JCR: Yeah. Are you getting the sense I don’t want to talk about Steve Brule?

ESQ: Yeah. Why is that?

JCR: Some things are just better left mysterious. I’m not really interested in picking it apart.

In my opinion, anyone who feels the need to deconstruct something like this isn’t quite up to the task of watching Steve Brule-centric programming. Why does he say “pruppets” instead of “puppets”? I don’t know, and more importantly, it doesn’t matter. If you’ve never had the privilege of watching this show, six minutes of it are after the jump. Try going a day without it. You’ll miss it, Charlie!

Awesome Must-Watch: Rob Corddry’s ‘Childrens Hospital’ Online Now

07.02.10 Written by Matt

Back in May, Adult Swim ordered an adaptation of “Childrens Hospital,” a web series that “Daily Show” vet Rob Corddry created for TheWB.com to spoof medical dramas like “House” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” The cast is an awesome collection of some of the great role players in comedy today: Ken Marino, Rob Huebel, Megan Mullally, Henry Winkler, hot chicks with good comic timing [Lake Bell, Erinn Hayes, and Malin Akerman (RAWR - Ed.)] , and Corddry as a bloody clown-doctor. In addition to that, the show features guest appearances from Adam Scott, Jeffrey Ross, John Cho, Lizzy Caplan, Ed Begley Jr, Paul Scheer, David Wain, Nick Kroll, Rachel Harris, and Nick Offerman, among others.

*strokes enormous comedy boner*

The show debuts on July 11th, but you can watch an entire episode online at Adult Swim. Full press release at Collider. Dog riding a bicycle here. Shannen Doherty when she posed for Playboy (NSFW). Unicorndog.
