Help me Find the $5 Corgi

03.11.11 Written by Matt

Earlier this week, reader J-Beks sent me a picture of a five-dollar bill stamped with a corgi face and the inscription “QUIZZICAL CORGI • HI FROM HOUSTON, TX” (full-size image here). He wrote:

I found this here in Houston, a friend gave it to me when she paid me back for something or other. I must find out who is doing this/what this is.

Well J-Beks, I agree: I want to know who is doing this. If you’ve gotten your hands on a piece of corgi currency like this or know anything about the mysterious corgi stamper, please email me directly with any clues. I promise complete confidentiality — I just want to know more about this five. Five-dollar. Five-dollar CORRRRGIIIIII.

UPDATE: On this wheresgeorge forum, a poster named “Quossum” claims to be the corgi stamper.  So whaddaya say, Q? Shoot me an email so I can circulate some corgi cash.

What’s that you say? That’s not enough corgis for Corgi Friday? Very well, then: here’s a bunch more:

Fun Fact: The New Arby’s Guy Was My College Roommate

03.09.11 Written by Matt

By now you’ve likely seen the new Arby’s ad campaign featuring an affable white guy leading a sing-along  about “Good Mood Food.” Frankly, I have no idea whether the commercial is a success or not — YouTube comments like “WORST MARKETING CAMPAIGN EVER!” don’t help — but I love it. My reasoning is simple: the ad stars one of my closest friends over the last 14 years, my college roommate Andy. (Look! We’re in the same fedora club!)

I recognize how cheesy that must sound, and I’m already anticipating the worst in the comments section — “Ooh, Mr. Big Shot, friends with a guy in a COMMERCIAL!” — but I’m thrilled for Andy, who’s finally making some good money after ten years of auditions in New York.

UPDATE: An earlier version of this post had an interview which I’ve cut because I went outside of proper channels. Oops.

Corgi Friday: Interview with Lobster Dog’s Owner

02.04.11 Written by Matt

I first saw Lobster Dog on February 22nd, 2010. I know the date because I posted the picture to my Facebook wall (at the time, I was unaware of the original flickr source). From that point on, the little corgi in a lobster costume became a Photoshop favorite here at Warming Glow as well as FilmDrunk and With Leather. I’ve now put Lobster Dog into so many images that she turns up in Google image searches for a lot of TV shows — I assume that’s how the little guy ended up on the Huffington Post.

Except Lobster Dog — who’s also known as Red Lobster thanks to the Dogfort meme that exploded last November — isn’t a guy. She’s a bitch named Kiki, as I learned from her owner David as we traded emails this week. (I haven’t been that surprised and pleased at a gender reveal since the first time I learned that Samus Aran from Metroid was a woman.)

What follows is the interview I conducted with David, along with several photos of Kiki that are new to the Internet. Be warned: if you’re just here for the TV news, you probably don’t want to read 2000 words of guys talking about dogs.

The WG Interview: Henry Rollins

12.14.10 Written by Matt

Henry Rollins came to television in an unusual manner: the former Black Flag frontman appeared on MTV’s “Alternative Nation” and “MTV Sports” in the early ’90s while he was still the lead singer of Rollins Band. Since then, he’s dabbled in work as both an actor and a TV host while he’s not touring as a spoken-word artist, traveling to support the USO and other activist causes, or otherwise engaged in his multi-hyphenate career (author, radio host, publisher, and so on).

Recently returned from a visit to southern Sudan and Uganda with Drop in the Bucket, an organization that provides water and sanitation facilities in Africa, Rollins spoke to me last Wednesday about his recent television career — from the “Sons of Anarchy” set to his infamous run-in with hipsters on German television (“They’re soft children”) to his upcoming appearances on National Geographic and Nat Geo Wild. The interview has been edited for clarity and length, with multimedia added where applicable.

The Jimmy Johnson Interview

08.24.10 Written by Matt

As you may remember, last week I ditched the Internet for a couple hours to interview NFL on Fox commentator and “Survivor” contestant Jimmy Johnson. Well, I finally got around to transcribing and editing it, and you can read the whole thing over at Kissing Suzy Kolber. Here’s a sample:

KSK: I read that this is your third time trying out for Survivor.
Jimmy Johnson: I tried about six years ago, and got turned down. I did the video, did all the applications, everything.
KSK: Did you make sure to tell them you were famous?

And then I honked my bike horn.

KSK: And there will be a live finale [for "Survivor"] where someone gets a rose?
JJ: A live finale, yeah, to show who actually won [between the final three contestants].
KSK: It would really help me out with my career if you could just tell me who those final three are.

*honk honk* Anyway, go read it. It’s two-for-one day at work for me.
