TV Gourmet: Making Food and Drinks from ‘Archer’

03.22.12 Written by Josh

Previously on TV Gourmet: we prepared meals from “Happy Endings,” “The Simpsons,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Freaks and Geeks,” and “30 Rock.” Today, we’re focusing on FX’s “Archer,” which just finished its superb, excellent, other synonyms for “awesome” third season. We cried into SO many potatoes.

We (“we” being myself and photographer Nadia) made food and drinks from throughout the show’s run, including breakfast chow paired with Nutella and one of the foulest things I’ve ever drank – and I’ve had Diet Mountain Dew. (We wanted to make a Green Russian, but absinthe is more expensive than we thought. If there’s anyone out there with access to cheap green liquor, let us know. The more clearly opened the bottle, the better!)

No ocelots were cooked in the making of this post.

TV GIFs of the Week (with Extra ‘Community’)

03.16.12 Written by Josh

We’re still waiting to hear how “Community” did last night ratings-wise, but no matter the answer, the numbers will be slightly skewed (for the better). “The Big Bang Theory” wasn’t on, and it’s likely at least SOME of that audience headed over to NBC, rather than watch college basketball. (UPDATE: it did very well.) And hopefully SOME of THAT audience flipped to FX for “Archer” because holy moly, was that an awesome episode.

We’ve got two of the three shows mentioned above covered in this installment of GIFs of the Week (the one rule of this feature: NO BAZINGAS. Bazongas, sure), as well as choice selections from “Eastbound & Down,” “South Park,” “Southland,” and other shows without directions in the title.

What If James Bond Actually Delivered Sterling Archer’s Lines?

03.13.12 Written by Dustin Rowles

Adam Reed’s “Archer” is obviously heavily influenced by James Bond movies. Sterling Archer is a mixture of James Bond, Inspector Clouseau, and maybe a dash of Gob Bluth. I love Bond films (and I’m stoked about a blond Javier Bardem starring as the villain in Bond 23), but while James Bond has a certain suave charm, how much more entertaining would that character be if he delivered Sterling Archer’s lines? I mean, would it kill James Bond to have a sense of humor or hold his liquor a little less well?

This is the James Bond I’d love to see on the big screen: One written by Adam Reed. It’d look a little something like this.

The 2012 Comedy Award Nominations: Good Shows We Like Actually Recognized

03.07.12 Written by Dustin Rowles

The Comedy Awards are a thing, and this year, they’re handing out their second annual awards in late April on Comedy Central. If you’re not familiar, the Comedy Awards are chosen by a Board of Directors that assembles solely for the purpose of nominating and awarding Comedy Awards. There are, however, quite a few people of extraordinary taste among the Board of Directors, so it’s not empty recognition by a bunch of old white men. That board includes: Adam McKay, Carol Burnett, Chris Rock, Conan O’Brien, Jay Roach, Joan Rivers, Jon Stewart, Lily Tomlin, Ray Romano, Stephen Colbert, and Steve Levine. Some of these people actually know what they’re talking about, which is why the likes of Donald Glover, “Childrens Hospital,” “Louie,” and “Happy Endings” got nominated. Some (one) of them created “Modern Family,” which is why the nominations for “Modern Family” are over-represented (but poor Conan; on the board, but still can’t get his show nominated). Still, not a bad slate of nominations. Not bad at all:

What’s On Tonight: The Return of Bionic Barry

03.01.12 Written by Josh

Archer (FX, 10 p.m.) – Tonight’s “Archer” live blog guest on Uproxx is Animation Director Bryan Fordney. His bio begins, “I started as an intern on Frisky Dingo,” which is the way every bio should begin. As for tonight’s episode: it’s called “Crossing Over,” and hopefully has EVERYTHING to do with that terrible Harrison Ford movie of the same name. The episode also sees the return of Bionic Barry and Nikolai Jakov.

30 Rock (NBC, 8 p.m.) – Chloë Moretz is back, to make us all feel REALLY uncomfortable.

Parks and Recreation (NBC, 8:30 p.m.) – Carl Reiner and Kathryn Hahn (and maybe Paul Rudd? IMDb and my heart say yes; TV Guide has no mention of him) guest star in tonight’s episode, which continues to follow the adventures of the “Yes We Can’t Not. Knope.” campaign.

Unsupervised (FX, 10:30 p.m.) – I love the idea of Walton Goggins voicing a guitar-strumming, cape-wearing psychic – but I need to know if he dances as well as Boyd.

Awake (NBC, 10 p.m.) – Series premiere. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this show, in which a police detective (played by Jason Issacs) is able to switch between realities when he’s asleep after being in a car accident. In one reality, his wife (Laura Allen, from “Terriers”) died in the wreck. In the other, his son did. Be sure to get super invested, because between being created by Kyle Killen (MISS YOU “Lone Star”) and airing on NBC Thursday nights at 10 p.m., it’s bound to be canceled, no matter its quality.

LATE NIGHT GUESTS: Jon Hamm on Letterman; Julianne Moore on Leno; Joan Rivers and Nicki Minaj on Kimmel; Henry Winkler and Jay Baruchel on Ferguson; Lindsay Lohan, Rob Riggle, and Elvis Costello on Fallon; Megan Mullally on Conan; M. Cathleen Kaveny on Stewart; and Claire Danes on Colbert.
