Conan Unveils Museum of Conan

07.21.11 Written by Matt

Late-night geek hero Conan O’Brien is embracing Comic-Con, unveiling the Museum of Conan Art (Coco MoCA) in San Diego. The exhibit showcases all the Conan-inspired fan art, which would be creepy and weird if it weren’t for cool things like the Team Coco poster and The Flaming C. The MoCA website is accepting submissions, and says:

Enter The Museum Of Conan Art — a museum FOR the people and BY the people. So whether you’re a painter, sketch artist, sculptor, or a Photoshop pixel-pusher, we want to see your Team Coco themed artwork. With a bit of luck, it might end up backstage in the “Conan” Green Room.

One such piece of art is a LEGO statue of The Flaming C (above, in the right window), which you can watch being constructed at the bottom of the page here.

Hmmmm… I wonder what Conan thinks about all this art?

‘Simpsons’ Intro Is Dark as Hell

10.12.10 Written by Matt

Renowned graffiti artist Banksy directed the opening credits to last night’s episode of “The Simpsons,” and the scene that follows after the couch gag is probably the most subversive minute of “The Simpsons” in at least ten years. In a surprisingly dark montage, women and children in an Asian sweatshop abuse animals to create Simpsons merchandise. And it’s a delight to watch: it’s reminiscent of the time when “The Simpsons” poked fun at Fox and its own success with thought-provoking gags and story lines. (Instead of, say, propping up other Fox shows like “24″ and “Glee.”)

Anyway, Banksy did a great job with this, but I don’t recommend hiring just any graffiti artist to direct a video for you. Especially if it’s your wedding video. Not unless you want the bride to constantly be attacked by cartoon erections.

BRITS GET KNICKERS IN A TWIST OVER NUDITY

07.09.09 Written by Matt

nudeThe UK’s Channel Four is fielding complaints just because of an instructive painting show.  Oh, and I guess technically it showed a model in the nude.  During lunch time hours.

The channel is showing five life drawing classes through the week as part of its education show Life Class: Today’s Nude.

Each half-hour broadcast has a different model and tutor to tell viewers about art and drawing techniques, guiding them through drawing their own picture as if they are in a real life class…

Section 1.18 of Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code says: “Nudity before the watershed must be justified by the context.”

Sweet, I love justified nudity!  I’m getting pretty good at it, too.  “No, your honor, I wasn’t wearing pants.  But in my defense, have you SEEN the rack on the plaintiff!?!?”
