‘Auto-Tune the News’ Crew Making Comedy Central Pilot

08.17.10 Written by Matt

The Gregory Brothers, the tech-savvy musical geniuses responsible for Auto-Tune the News, the Bed Intruder Song, and the Double Rainbow Song (video below), revealed last week in an interview with Wired that they’re developing a pilot for Comedy Central. (The group previously worked with the channel by collaborating on the “Why Must I Cry?” Web Redemption for “Tosh.0.”) An excerpt:

Sarah: We amuse each other, and luckily, other people seem to think we’re amusing too. So we’re actually going to be working with Comedy Central to produce a pilot in the coming months.
Wired.com: Wow. Is the show going to be along the lines of “Bed Intruder” and “Auto-Tune the News,” or is it more of a behind-the-scenes look at you guys?
Sarah: It will have a musical component, and it will certainly be based on a lot of internet culture.
Evan: But it will be mostly behind the scenes.
Michael: Where we’re coming from, and where people know us from, is certainly important in how we’re shaping the show.
Wired.com: Fantastic. Is there any idea when that might air?
Michael: It wouldn’t be until next year — I think we’d be surprised if it was as soon as next spring.

It’s pretty cool to see legitimately talented people get TV shows thanks to the meritocracy of the Internet instead of, say, Jim Belushi (who has a new show this fall, by the way. Thanks, CBS!). By the way, The Gregory Brothers split all proceeds with their “unintentional singers” 50-50, which helped Antoine Dodson move his family out of the projects. So they’re successful, talented, and nice. I kind of hate them.

The Best Song About Rape Ever Made

08.02.10 Written by Matt

Last week, Antoine Dodson soared to Internet stardom with his impassioned interview on the Huntsville news (see: “They rapin’ everyone out here”). Well, the geniuses at Auto-Tune the News went to work on that clip and created the finest song about rape the world has ever heard. Yes, better than Nirvana’s “Rape Me.” Better than Stone Temple Pilots’ “Sex Type Thing.” Better even than “Hold Her Down” by Toad the Wet Sprocket.

Um, not that I have an iTunes playlist of songs about rape or anything.

Anyway, if you’re looking for more Antoine Dodson goodness, watch the video below in which a calmer, more reserved Dodson gives a follow-up interview to the news station that made him famous. Or do what I did and just watch the “Bed Intruder Song” three more times. What can I say, the lyrics just really speak to me.

Auto-Tune the News #12

06.21.10 Written by Matt

Auto-Tune the News is back with another installment, and this one tackles two subjects: the discussion about Elena Kagan’s sexuality (She played softball! Dyke!) and the possible legalization of marijuana in California. Try to guess if the ATN crew is for legalization. Try to guess if the young tech-savvy people whose work on the Internet involves wearing costumes and altering the voices of political analysts so they can sing along. Could they possibly enjoy marijuana? I don’t know, they seem a little too stuffy to me.

WE SHALL BUILD A TURTLE FENCE

02.24.10 Written by Matt

attn-turtle-fence

There’s a new episode of Auto-Tune the News (see video below), and it once again takes Congressional debate and news coverage and turns it into a catchy-as-hell song. The topics covered here are turtle fences, Scott Brown’s election, and the Super Bowl (Drew Brees’s voice is exceptionally melodic in auto-tune). If C-SPAN was always like this, I would actually care about politics.

It pains me to have such a positive attitude about something, but I really am blown away by how insanely creative these people are. Any jackass can Photoshop cats into pictures, but to manipulate sound and video of political debate into a 3-minute original music video is a level of creativity and effort I can’t even fathom.

‘AUTO-TUNE THE NEWS’ ON NOBEL & HEALTH CARE

10.15.09 Written by Matt

I’m unabashed in my adoration of Auto-Tune the News, as I think this is the most innovative and entertaining way to use something that was developed to help untalented people. And unlike most creative endeavors, these videos keep getting better and better. This one’s got a little more of a gospel feel to it, with Hugo Chavez playing air guitar and Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) laying down a sick verse on health care.

Frankly, I don’t want ANY news unless it’s auto-tuned like this. It takes all that gloom-and-doom stuff about war and health care reform and turns it into a lively, upbeat song. Maybe the next episode will totally cheer us up about Bubble Boy.
