Now that we’ve all recovered from the news of Osama bin Laden’s death and shifted our focus to war dogs, people are sifting through the archives of the Internet to find TV clips where people claim that bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan. In the first clip below, you’ll see the Janitor from “Scrubs” tell Zach Braff’s character that the government should be looking for bin Laden in Pakistan; in the second, Christiane Amanpour tells Bill Maher in 2008 that a source in the intelligence community told her that bin Laden was hiding in a villa in Pakistan.

I’m all for putting a pop culture spin on currents events, but the Internet’s attention-whoring for these videos falls somewhere between simplistic and moronic: “DURR, THE JANITOR WAS RIGHT!” “OBAMA SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO THE WOMAN!” What the hell? It’s not like Pakistan was the most brazen prediction for Osama’s hiding place. For the last nine years, the only real guesses to his whereabouts were Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Making a fuss over this is like running the headline “MAN BOLDLY PICKS RED SOX TO WIN AL EAST.”

Warning to any political centrists: watching Bill Maher can turn you into a staunch Republican.

Zach Galifianakis made news this weekend by smoking a joint on “Real Time with Bill Maher.” It was to make a political point about the upcoming vote on legalization in California, of course. He certainly doesn’t seem like the sort of person who would smoke pot recreationally.

HBO has just renewed “Real Time With Bill Maher” for the 2011 season. This deal locks down Maher for 35 episodes, rather than the usual 25 or so. This means that we’ll be treated to roughly 50% more of the following:

- Liberals sitting around a table and validating each other’s opinions
- Conservative idealogue getting browbeaten by said liberals
- Unqualified actors/musicians offering opinions on foreign policy
- Bill Maher struggling through unfunny skit
- Bill Maher killing the crowd with an opening monologue that features jokes about Jon and Kate Plus 8, Sarah Palin, Snuggies, or whatever overworn shard of popular culture is within arm’s reach
- Bill Maher delivering a serious monologue at the end of the show about how food is bad

Despite all this, the show usually manages to be somewhat enjoyable. The real fun lies in trying to figure out how Bill Maher can be endearing while also being the smarmiest person in the history of the world.

Comedian Bill Maher may have thought he was on American Gladiator rather than Pictionary [Ed.- Ha ha, good one, Jay.] in 1997 when an excitable Erik Estrada knocked him to the floor. The CHiPs actor was celebrating his successful deciphering of the phrase “tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree” when, in his exuberance, he hit Maher in the nose. The taped show cut away; when it returned, Maher had a compress against his face while Estrada sat sheepishly nearby.

Then Maher was his usual sarcastic self, guessing punch, fist, and brain damage on the next game. In fairness to Estrada, Maher’s nose is huge and hard to miss.
