Community Probably Can’t Do A “Back To The Future” Episode

07.28.11 Written by RoboPanda

The new season of Community starts production this week, and the cast and crew have been keeping the details pretty well under wraps.  So far we only know that Michael K. Williams and John Goodman will be guest stars at some point, and Gillian Jacobs has said there will be “a big reveal” for Britta this season, prompting us to stare at this .gif for two hours while hoping for a very special episode about bisexuality. (Emmy material?  Absolutely.)

CinemaBlend spoke to Donald Glover and Gillian Jacobs recently about storylines they’d like to cover on the show.  Glover mentioned the Back to the Future parody he’s been pitching to the writers for awhile, but also explained why it’ll probably never happen:

Glover: It’s really hard to do. Time travel is already hard.
Jacobs: We can’t actually break the laws of physics.
Glover: We’ve never had actual magic on the show. Time travel is tricky. It would have to be some sort of, like, mistake. But a mistake big enough that it can sustain a whole episode, but also small enough that it doesn’t f-ck up the rest of the world. So it’s hard. I had an idea, but it’s not well-formed.

It’s true that they’ve never broken the laws of physics on the show, unless you count the gravity-defying feats of Alison Brie running.  When the writers wanted to do a zombie episode, they had a tainted meat product cause an outbreak, and, when they wanted to do an episode in space, they kept it based squarely in reality by having the cast happen upon a “Kentucky Fried Chicken space simulator” (which needs to be installed in every KFC immediately).  If they can find a way to work a Back to the Future premise into the show, we’re just hoping Abed (Danny Pudi) is seen in the background of several scenes silently arguing with Thomas F. Wilson until finally laying him out with one punch.  The rest of the episode should just be Alison Brie running.

‘The Secret Circle’ Has New TV Posters

07.28.11 Written by Burnsy

Riding high on the success of Vampire Diaries, the WB CW has the hype machine running full speed for its latest teen super-powers-as-a-metaphor-for-diversity-parable, The Secret Circle, which debuts on September 15. The show is based on the book series from author L.J. Smith, who also did pretty well as my fantasy football tight end a few seasons ago.

So what, pray tell, is the story behind this teen romance fantasy series that makes it any different from all the others?

Circle (which is executive-produced by Vampire Diaries boss Kevin Williamson) centers on Cassie (played by Robertson), a teen who is forced by tragedy to leave behind her life in California for the mysterious Chance Harbor, Wash. There, she discovers that both she and her new group of friends — among them, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles‘ Thomas Dekker, Days of Our Lives alum Shelley Hennig and Australian starlet Phoebe Tonkin — are in fact witches. (Via TV Line)

Ah yes, this one is about witches… who attend high school in the Pacific Northwest. Huge difference.

The network released a teaser at Comic Con to get the geek hormones fired up, and I’m not gonna lie – this cast has some serious potential. Britt Robertson plays the lead witch – the reluctant sorceress, if you will – and I have no clue who she is. But the always wonderful Natasha Henstridge is playing the principal, and former Miss Teen USA Shelley Hennig is a witch, too. Also, Phoebe Tonkin is fresh off the boat from Australia and she seems nice. In all, this may deserve at least a viewing on mute.

After the jump, check out the new promo character posters, as well as the Comic Con teaser.

‘Sunny’ Cast Sing ‘Dayman’ for Comic-Con

07.26.11 Written by Matt

Listen, I love me some “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” And I certainly love “Dayman,” the centerpiece of “The Nightman Cometh” episode that became a play in its own right. I’ve lost entire afternoons of my life singing the “ah-ah-AHHH!” chorus in my head. So, while I think it’s awesome that the “Sunny” cast did their Comic-Con panel in their “Nightman Cometh” costumes, I’m not sure why the video of them singing “Dayman” (below) is making the rounds on other sites, because it’s pretty uninspired.

However, this DOES give me a chance to listen to the GOOD version of “Dayman” — and that ALWAYS warrants a post. Ah-ah-AHHHH! Fighter of the Nightman!

‘Glee’ Stars Not Leaving After All

07.25.11 Written by Matt

Two weeks ago, “Glee” co-creator Ryan Murphy made news when he told The Hollywood Reporter that some of the show’s principal stars — Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith — would leave the show after the coming season when their characters graduate high school. Here’s what he said at the time:

“You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”

It was a ballsy, admirable decision — and one that apparently isn’t true. Over the weekend, “Glee’s” other co-creator, Brad Falchuk, said that Michele, Colfer, and Monteith weren’t leaving the show.

“Here’s the exact thing: They’re seniors. They’re graduating. But that doesn’t mean they’re leaving the show,” Falchuk said. “It was never our intention or plan to let these people go… They are not done with the show after this season.” [Deadline]

Falchuk also maligned the THR reporter* for misreporting what Murphy said, something that Dan Fienberg scorched over at HitFix. Whatever the case, whether the stars are leaving or staying, one thing remains the same: me not giving a crap about “Glee.”

Corgi Cosplay For Comic-Con

07.22.11 Written by Matt

Comic-Con stories rule the headlines right now, so I figured this week’s Corgi Friday should be the geekiest corgis I could find: cosplay corgis! The slideshow that follows is the Internet’s finest collection of corgis in cosplay costumes, ranging from fantasy to comics to horror to video games to anime. Corgi cosplay: it’s just like human cosplay, but cuter. And with better breath.
