Comic-Con Round-Up: Game of Pedicabs

07.22.11 Written by Matt

Over the weekend, there are going to be 800,000 news stories out of Comic-Con that I won’t even attempt to address until Monday morning. And even with me writing about Comic-Con stories like the Conan museum and “Pan Am” and the “Dexter” trailer and the new “Beavis and Butt-Head” footage since yesterday afternoon, there’s still a ton of stuff from Day 1 that I didn’t get to address. This should catch you up:

  • A Golden Treasury of Photos from Day 1 of Comic-Con. [Uproxx]
  • Comic-Con Bingo card. Weird, there’s no square for “inhaler.” [Gamma Squad]
  • Recap of the “Archer” panel. “Danger zone!” [HitFix]
  • Recap of the “Game of Thrones” panel. There’s some cool news about coming seasons (without getting into spoilers). [TV Line]
  • Hot Cosplay Girls of Comic-Con: Day 1. [ScreenJunkies]
  • Interview with Peter Dinklage about “Game of Thrones.” [EW]
  • Sexy lady Chewbacca. Not TV-related, but worthwhile. [BuzzFeed, pictured at right]
  • Interview with “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman about the coming season. [EW]
  • Recap of the “Wilfred” panel. Some cool insights into the effort the creative team puts into the character of Wilfred. [HitFix]

So there you go. Read everything there, and you’ll be more or less up to speed on TV stuff from Comic-Con until, oh, a couple minutes from now. Because it won’t be long before we see the first reports from the “Torchwood” panel and the “Locke & Key” screening and “The Walking Dead” panel and the “Venture Bros.” panel and “The Big Bang Theory” Q&A and… *sticks pistol in mouth*

Conan Unveils Museum of Conan

07.21.11 Written by Matt

Late-night geek hero Conan O’Brien is embracing Comic-Con, unveiling the Museum of Conan Art (Coco MoCA) in San Diego. The exhibit showcases all the Conan-inspired fan art, which would be creepy and weird if it weren’t for cool things like the Team Coco poster and The Flaming C. The MoCA website is accepting submissions, and says:

Enter The Museum Of Conan Art — a museum FOR the people and BY the people. So whether you’re a painter, sketch artist, sculptor, or a Photoshop pixel-pusher, we want to see your Team Coco themed artwork. With a bit of luck, it might end up backstage in the “Conan” Green Room.

One such piece of art is a LEGO statue of The Flaming C (above, in the right window), which you can watch being constructed at the bottom of the page here.

Hmmmm… I wonder what Conan thinks about all this art?

Why Is ‘Pan Am’ Is at Comic-Con?

07.21.11 Written by Matt

Much to my surly annoyance, Comic-Con has begun today, filling up my various news feeds with geeky crap about elves and sorcerers and spaceships and vampires and Pokemon and… stewardesses? WTF? Why is ABC’s “Pan Am” at Comic-Con?

Sitting there on the trade show floor is a replicated piece of Pan Am fuselage, staffed by politically incorrect stewardesses in little blue hats and even tinier skirts.

At least one attendee, Martin Gonzales, a 34-year-old shipping clerk, was confused. “I don’t get it,” he said, walking past. “Are there zombies inside?” [NYT Arts Beat]

Holy crap, that’s a great idea. Everyone has been calling “Pan Am” an airline industry rip-off of “Mad Men,” but what if it was a rip-off of “Mad Men” AND “The Walking Dead”? That’s two AMC rip-offs for the price of one! TV’s very first period zombie drama! Frankly, I’m surprised that the Hollywood Story Generator hasn’t already come up with “1960s zombies on a plane” by now.

Oh No! Stop Everything! The ‘Bones’ Comic-Con Panel Is Canceled!

07.20.11 Written by Matt

Absolutely tragic news today: the Comic-Con panel for “Bones” has been canceled. This catastrophic disaster could affect dozens, maybe even hundreds of geeks who were planning to ask David Borneaz a question about “Angel.” Michael Ausiello, the vacant-eyed Billy Bush of entertainment writers who was supposed to moderate the panel, says:

According to a show rep, both Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz are unable to make the trek to San Diego for personal reasons. As a result, the session has been scrapped.

Anyway, lots of other entertainment sites are beefing up their coverage of Comic-Con, with multiple reporters and live Twitter updates and yadda yadda *wank* *fart noise*. My solemn promise to you, the reader, is that I will continue to sit on my couch and be surly about the excessive hype created by obsessive geeks. If I have some extra time, I’ll come up for some new epithets for Ausiello, a fawning moron of staggering incompetence who won’t stop until he’s destroyed the meaning of the word “exclusive.” That’s the real shame of the “Bones” panel being canceled: it would have been a great time to throw rocks and glass bottles at him.

‘Walking Dead’ Comic Con Poster

07.19.11 Written by Matt

"Whoa! Hey! Don't scratch the paint!"

Here’s the poster that will promote “The Walking Dead” at Comic-Con. And while I ordinarily don’t like writing about posters, I also can’t see new “Walking Dead” art and NOT put Lobster Dog in the picture. She’s just so resolute, so determined and unflappable. She’s precisely the dog I’d want to cuddle during a zombie apocalypse.

There’s a full-size version of banner image here (update: link fixed), and a full size of the original, Lobster Dog-less poster here. Although why you’d want a poster without Lobster Dog is beyond my comprehension. Just show yourself to another TV blog, mister. I don’t want your business.
