‘Sandman’ TV Series Not Happening

03.15.11 Written by Matt

Back in September, “Supernatural” creator Eric “Officer” Kripke was the top choice to make a TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed Sandman comic. Unfortunately for Gaiman fans — or perhaps fortunately? — Kripke says that despite some discussions with Gaiman, the series won’t be happening.

Speaking from the red carpet before the Supernatural panel at PaleyFest on Sunday afternoon, Kripke says The Sandman “just didn’t quite happen this season through nobody’s fault, and hopefully we can do it again in the future.” [THR]

Honestly, this is probably for the best. The worlds that Gaiman created for Sandman would be incredibly difficult to bring to the screen, and the protagonist is a moody character who isn’t always likable. A TV series might not succeed and would almost certainly piss off the comic geeks. And NOBODY wants to piss off the comic geeks. When they protest something, the stench of B.O. and Cheetohs is overwhelming.

Meanwhile, Gaiman is busy writing a film treatment of a Chinese novel for Zhang Jizhong. Ha ha ha, jiz hong.

‘Wonder Woman’ Coming Back to TV

10.04.10 Written by Matt

After years of aborted attempts to bring Wonder Woman to the big screen, Warner Bros. is looking to bring the sexy DC Comics heroine to television. And to ensure that it goes well, they’re hired a TV writer/producer who excels at creating memorable-yet-disposable legal dramas.

Warner Bros. Television is developing a modern-day reboot of the classic DC comic book heroine and has lassoed an unlikely talent to potentially write and produce the superhero project: David E. Kelley, the showrunner behind legal dramas such as “Ally McBeal,” “Boston Legal” and “The Practice.”

The news comes after nearly a decade of attempts by Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver to launch a big-screen version. Actresses ranging from Angelina Jolie to Beyonce Knowles to Megan Fox have thrown their hat in the ring for the starring role at one time or another. [THR]

And by “thrown their hat in the ring,” they mean “fans Photoshopped her into Wonder Woman’s costume for masturbation purposes.”

Anyway, the big question is who will succeed Lynda Carter in the titular role now that flat asses in high-waisted granny panties aren’t considered sexy. For my money, nothing can touch Rachel Bilson in the WW costume when she was on “The O.C.” (see video below), but I’d also be okay with some other sexy brunette with big tits. I’m even open-minded enough to accept a sexy blonde with big tits. It’s the 21st century, people — it’s time to let go of our prejudices.

More Comic Books Coming to TV

09.02.10 Written by Matt

There are a couple of popular comics making news in the world of television right now. First off, Fox has made a series commitment to “Locke & Key,” the supernatural series penned by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King. The show will be executive produced by nerd darlings Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, so this has a fair to middling chance of not sucking.

More notably, Neil Gaiman’s epic and beloved Sandman series — starring Morpheus, the godlike being who controls dreams, and his six brothers and sisters who make up the Endless: Destiny, Destruction, Despair, Desire, Delirium, and sexy-ass Death – may be coming to the small screen:

Warner Bros. TV is in the midst of acquiring television rights from sister company DC Entertainment and is in talks with several writer-producers about adapting the 1990s series. At the top of the list is Eric Kripke, creator of the CW’s horror-tinged “Supernatural.” [THR]

Gamma Squad adds:

It also sounds like Warner won’t be moving forward with the project unless they can get Gaiman involved. Which… actually makes sense? Whoa. Mark your calenders. TV execs might make a good decision.

I don’t know whether to be excited for or fearful of a Sandman TV series. The comic was such a brilliantly imagined world, with characters that I became so attached to, that it would have to be perfectly executed just to prevent me from being disappointed. Or at least cast a really hot girl to play Death. I have exacting standards.

Sure, This Makes Sense

08.12.10 Written by Matt

Although “Glee” has had its share of genuine comedic moments, the real reason for the show’s runaway success has been its feel-good renditions of modern pop songs. And because music is such an intrinsic part of the show, “Glee” will now be available as a … umm… comic book?

Those hoping for new stories featuring the same characters are sure to be disappointed, though — this is part of the company’s “Fame” series which gives “a look at the lives of the actors and creative talent” on the show. [THR]

Dude, that’s not a comic book. That’s a Playbill with drawings. If choir kids go out and buy this, I wholly support schools cutting out arts programs.

Walking Dead’s Bicycle Girl Is A-Peelin’

08.06.10 Written by Mike

When promoting a zombie movie or television series, there’s only so much excitement you can generate by showing off images of the zombies themselves. “Yup, that sure looks like a zombie.” “I must say, you made the flesh recede from the bone very convincingly there.”

Still, “The Walking Dead” is a fantastic comic series and has the potential to be yet another great AMC show. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pinning all my hopes and dreams of a better, more zombified world on its success.

After the jump is a video showing the process of casting and producing the “bicycle girl” zombie, which is the among the first the central character, Rick, encounters at the beginning of the story. Of course, the time-lapse footage depicting the three-and-a-half hour process of adding all the prosthetics to the actress could have been greatly aided by removing the big band background score. That is, unless the show is courting some Seth MacFarlane producing money.
