TLC to Air ‘Cops’-Like DUI Show

11.08.11 Written by Matt

You may remember him from such drivers' ed films as "Alice's Adventures Through the Windshield Glass" and "The Decapitation of Larry Leadfoot."

TLC has long been America’s #1 channel for people seeking a 21st century freak show, but the cable network is edging into truTV’s territory with its newest offering:

The network has ordered D.U.I., a new series that goes behind the scenes of drunk-driving law enforcement in Oklahoma. TLC has picked up 12 episodes, with six debuting next month and the rest planned for 2012.

Unlike COPS, the TLC show just focuses on drunk-driving suspects and follows their story from being pulled over and being interrogated, to, if necessary, arrest and sentencing. [EW]

I freely admit that drunk people getting arrested can be hilarious (see: donka doo balls), but as someone who’s been pulled over under suspicion of DUI three different times (and never arrested!), I don’t think I could enjoy this. Even when you’re SOBER it’s an incredibly annoying/scary process. “I can smell alcohol in your vehicle.” Yeah officer, did you not see the three Marines passed out in my car? Or did you just think they were really tired from volunteering at a soup kitchen on a Saturday night?

Amazing: the Best of ‘COPS’

06.11.10 Written by Matt

This here is as good as it gets, folks. Four and a half minutes of “COPS” at its very best. Which is to say, four and a half minutes of America’s worst at their worst. Four and a half minutes of drunkenness, toothlessness, and pantslessness, with a side of tazer-y goodness. Or as I call it, Tuesday.

‘Cops’ Cannot Break These Cuffs

04.20.10 Written by Jon Bois

Fox has renewed Cops for a 23rd season. Producer John Langley remarks:

“We’re still the only show on television with no script, no actors, no host and no re-enactments.”

I have to think he isn’t completely correct about this, but honestly, I can’t think of a single show that meets these criteria. Throughout its 23 seasons, this show has served as television’s cornerstone of consistency and minimalism. This is why I feel sort of bad for reducing it to the “I can break these cuffs” moment, but it probably is what it probably is: my favorite moment in the history of the show.

People enjoy the show for different reasons: some enjoy watching people get arrested, others refer to it as an indictment of the American police state, and still others just enjoy it “as a wonder of a specific slice of American life, mostly unadulterated.” Anyway. In case you haven’t seen it, video of one of the show’s finest moments (complete with clownshoes background music, regrettably) is after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

‘COPS’ FOR KIDS IS FUN FOR ALL AGES

03.06.09 Written by Matt

Here is a video in which the people in “Cops” have been given cartoon animal heads. I found it humorous.
