Stop Everything: New ‘Eastbound & Down’ Trailer

09.14.10 Written by Matt

"I pretty much transcend race, hombre."

Below is the trailer for Season 2 of “Eastbound & Down,” featuring Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) attempting to revive his pitching career in Mexico. If I were any more excited for this show to come back, McBride would probably have to press charges against me. Hey pal, if you don’t want people looking inside your house, don’t have windows on the first floor.

‘Eastbound & Down’ Season 2 Preview

09.01.10 Written by Matt

HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” made waves when it introduced one of television’s most quotable antiheroes: washed-up former major league pitcher Kenny Powers (Danny McBride). After a long hiatus — the six-episode Season 1 aired in the winter of 2009 — Season 2 will finally arrive September 26th with Kenny playing for a Mexican pro team, the Charros. Bootlicking sidekick Steve will follow him south of the border, where he’ll also befriend a foul-mouthed midget named Aaron.

For more on Season Dos, put on some skinny jeans and act like you don’t care what VICE has to say.

We can safely say that the season is worthy of the original and is its own different, more somber beast. This is how Eastbound’s co-creator/director Jody Hill described his aspirations during our set visit  in Puerto Rico: “Tonally, I want the season to feel like a cross between Amores Perros and Bad News Bears. The comedy will be similar enough hopefully that it doesn’t throw people, but there are darker elements. And we are shooting on 35mm, so the production design, all the locations, it’s going to have a bigger feel. I think we did a good job at making last season feel like a movie, and more so with this one.”

Amores Perros and Bad News Bears, huh? So I guess Jackie Earle Haley gets attacked by dogs? I like it. Anyway, I’d rather not prattle on about being excited for this “Eastbound” to return, so I’ll leave you with ten minutes of the best of Kenny Powers. That is why I’m better than everyone in the world.

Kenny Powers Signed by K-Swiss

08.02.10 Written by Matt

This Funny or Die/K-Swiss viral marketing video is making the rounds today. I wasn’t going to post it because it didn’t make me laugh, but then everybody else was all, “Kenny Powers signs with K-Swiss! So awesome LOL!!!!” Don’t get me wrong, I love “Eastbound and Down,” but it’s essentially just four minutes of Kenny Powers saying different variants of “f*ck.” Here’s the conversation FilmDrunk and I had about it:

Vince: Assuming you’ve seen this by now…
Matt: Yeah. Am I the only one who wants a little more thought in a sketch than Kenny Powers saying “motherf*cker”?
Vince: Yes.

So there you go. I guess I’m just a picky little bitch.

At the very least, I have to tip my hat to K-Swiss for having the balls to participate in such edgy, profane marketing. I can’t put dildo in a headline without losing an advertiser, yet K-Swiss offers up its name for a four-and-a-half minute skit full of F-bombs, the finger, and sex. That makes me want to buy a pair of K-Swisses, and I don’t even wear shoes.

‘Eastbound & Down’ Moves to Mexico

04.23.10 Written by Matt

Season 2 of HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” will take place in Mexico, where fallen baseball star Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) has gone after leaving North Carolina at the end of the brief but brilliant first season. Michael Pena (Crash) and Ana de la Reguera (Nacho Libre, Cop Out) will join the cast. Deadline has more details:

In Season 2, hiding from his problems, Kenny finds himself in Mexico where he joins a local baseball team. Pena will play Kenny’s friend and owner of the baseball team he joins. De la Reguera will play Kenny’s love interest in Mexico.

Because of the new setting, most of the cast members from Season 1 of the show will have little or no presence next season with the exception of Steve Little whose character Stevie Janowski will track Danny down in Mexico. Casting is underway for the role of Kenny’s father.

I don’t have much to say, besides (a) I’m totally stoked, (b) if you have to replace fine-ass Katy Mixon, a hot Latina is an acceptable choice, and (c) I can’t believe I’ve never had a cat with a sombrero on this blog before. ¡Ay yi yi! ¡Uno gato con cigaro! ¡Me gusta!

ALL THE KENNY POWERS AUDIO TAPES

04.03.09 Written by Matt

Fans of HBO’s “Eastbound and Down” are already familiar with the inspirational audiobook that Danny McBride’s Kenny Powers listens to, “You’re F-cking Out, I’m F-cking In” by Kenny Powers (read by Kenny Powers).  Over its six-episode run, Kenny regularly listened to the audiotapes, which include such gems as:

“Just ask my second wife Tina. Yeah, she was a stripper.”
“Sure, I’ve been called a xenophobe, but the truth is I’m not. I just feel that America’s the best country and all the other countries aren’t as good.  That used to be called patriotism.”
“I’ve been blessed with many things in this life.  An arm like a damn rocket, a cock like a Burmese python, and the mind of a f-ckin’ scientist.”
“I love women, every f-ckin’ one of ‘em.  Even the ugly as sh-t ones.  But don’t ask me to trust ‘em.  Not even nuns.  Because every pair of tits comes with a gapin’ hole of need.”

Anyway, this video is every clip of the audiotapes from the show.  Enjoy.  It beats reading whatever I have to say.  All I’ve got are some awesome war stories and a great head of hair.
