Jimmy Fallon’s first show as the host of “Late Night” was… not good. Fallon looked nervous and uncomfortable for most of the show — it’s safe to say he was aware that millions of people had tuned in specifically to see him falter as the heir to one of TV’s most beloved and original personalities. Everyone’s first day on the job is bound to be a bit awkward, and even though Fallon has spent months trying out ideas for Late Night on his website, he still looked nervous, his eyes locked onto the cue cards more frequently than at us. He did an ultra-ordinary monologue — one liners about President Obama and the deficit that sounded like material Jay Leno’s writers had faxed over from L.A.

Sweaty, tense, uptight, nervous, wound-up, keyed up — pick an adjective. Any one of them would describe Fallon’s demeanor on opening night.
The highlights: anything involving The Roots (see above), and second guest Justin Timberlake, whose excess of charisma seemed to put Fallon (somewhat) at ease. My suggestion to Jimmy: go ahead and drink a little before the show. In my experience, drinking makes me looser and more charming. How else am I gonna write so well in the morning?
