The Best Costumes, Celebrities, and Pointless Merchandise from New York Comic Con

10.17.11 Written by Josh

This past weekend, photographer Nadia and I attended New York Comic Con in order to see people dressed up in wonderfully nerdy outfits and to find a signed No Doubt snare drum. We were successful on both accounts.

This was our second straight NYCC, and I’m still exhausted from last year. Tens of thousands of Batmans and Doctors and Totoros cram into the Javits Center to try out new video games, thumb through rare comics, and meet their favorite graphic novelists. Being a TV blog and all, Warming Glow ignored Issue #187 of The Amazing Spider-Man, and instead paid more attention to the people dressed as Sookie Stackhouse.

What follows on the next few pages are pictures of our favorite costumes, the celebrities who were signing autographs (only $100 for Mark Hamill, who proved visually elusive), and the random pieces of nostalgia you can only get at New York Comic Con. (Or the Internet.)

Eliza Dushku Joins Another Lousy Show

03.24.11 Written by Matt

Eliza Dushku — last seen leaving a project called “Bird Dog”has joined the cast of the CBS sitcom based on the life of ESPN’s racist plagiarist blowhard Colin Cowherd, a project that I’ve done my best to ignore up to this point.

Damon Wayans will star in the as-yet untitled sitcom, and I’m no expert on racial intricacies in America, but I’m pretty sure that playing a character who called John Wall everything but the N-word and said that Wall would fail in the NBA because he grew up without a father qualifies Wayans as an Uncle Tom.

Anyway, Dushku will play Cowherd’s/Wayans’s sassy co-worker Casey, and judging by the awful script for the pilot, her main job will be joking about her boobs and engaging in flirtatious repartee with Uncle Tom Cowherd. Ugh. I wish this new show half the success of “Tru Calling” and “Dollhouse.”

TNT Orders ‘Bird Dog’ w/ Eliza Dushku

11.30.10 Written by Matt

“Tru Calling” and “Dollhouse” star Eliza Dushku has been given another shot at her own series, as TNT has ordered a pilot for “Bird Dog” in which she would be a cop whose partner is her father.

Bird Dog centers on Gail McGrath (Dushku), who followed in her father’s footsteps in becoming a police officer but had little else in common with him. She left the big city she had grown up in to move to a small Pacific Northwestern town where she was patrolling the streets until her dad, a NYC cop, showed up on her front doorstep to join her as her new partner. Now this father-daughter team, call sign “Bird Dog,” is being put to the test — not only in solving crimes, but with each other. [Deadline]

This sounds like a steaming pile of dog crap to me, partly because no police chief would make a father and daughter be partners, and partly because — Whedonites be damned — I don’t think Dushku is talented enough to carry her own show. But that shouldn’t stop it from succeeding on TNT, where shows about female cops thrive, as evidenced by “The Closer,” “Rizzoli & Isles,” and of course “LADYCOPS: WOMEN WITH BADGES AND GUNS.”

What’s on Tonight: Duff vs. Dushku

11.04.10 Written by Matt

Community (NBC) — Hilary Duff guest stars in a Mean Girls-like episode that also features Pierce (Chevy Chase) getting hurt on a trampoline. Oh, and in case you were curious: last week, in the 8:30 spot with a strong lead-in, “Community” actually got good ratings. What a surprise.

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) — Squaring off against “Community,” “BBT” answers with a sexy guest star of its own: geek goddess Eliza Dushku.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX) — I’m woefully behind on this season. I have a bad habit of trying to have a social life on Thursday nights, then coming home and only watching “Community” before going to bed, leaving a couple hours’ worth of new TV unwatched on my DVR. But hey, you want a full-time TV reviewer, you gotta pay full-time reviewer money. My bank account says I’m only getting blogger dollars*. (*minimum wage + Camel Cash)

Bones (Fox) — “So You Think You Can Dance” star Stephen “tWitch” Boss guest stars to help dumb down the credits.

CSI: Original Flavor (CBS) — Larry Fishburne and the CSIs investigate a murder in which the body has been shredded to bits. “And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper.”

WHAT’S ON 2NITE: WELCOME TO THE ‘DOLLHOUSE’

Dollhouse (Fox) — Season 2 premiere. Hooray, another season from another Joss Whedon show I’ll never devote a full hour to. I do appreciate his eye for talent, however.

Brothers (Fox) — Series premiere. WOOOOOOOFFFFF. This is the living, breathing turd featuring former NFL defensive end Michael Strahan. Get ready for jokes about the space between his teeth.

Tool Academy 2 (VH1) — The tools go to work on a beet farm. You know, I didn’t think it could happen, but I suddenly kind of miss “The White Rapper Show.”

Ghost Whisperer/Medium (CBS) — Part of CBS’s “Women who used to be really hot, then put on some weight, and now we try to shoot from the chest up” Friday lineup.

Numb3rs (CBS) — 1 h8 wh0ever c4m3 up w1th th3 n4m3 4 th15 5h0w.

Psych (USA) — Kenan Thompson and Jaleel White guest star. Please, do NOT watch this show if you’ve recently gone off antidepressants. You WILL kill yourself.

Law & Order (NBC) — Season 20 premiere. Huh. I didn’t realize you could watch this NOT in syndication. This show will survive the nuclear holocaust — “the only show by, for, and about cockroaches!”

That’s all for this week. I’ll be back with a post or two tomorrow and/or Sunday. And don’t forget the new season of SNL begins this weekend. Didja hear? It’s gonna be hosted by Megan Fox Megan Fox Megan Fox Megan Fox Megan Fox Megan Fox!
