Ways to Improve ‘Modern Family’

08.30.10 Written by Matt

This was the last of the Emmy highlights that I enjoyed: in a pre-recorded segment, the cast of “Modern Family” reacts to corporate stuffed suit who throws out ideas to improve the Emmy-winning comedy. It starts off a little slowly — Stewie from “Family Guy” wore out his welcome long ago — but it picks up some steam (Sofia Vergara in 3-D? Yes please) and finishes strong with George Clooney. Most things with George Clooney finish strong, according to women’s desires and an article I read People Magazine.

So that’s that. If you missed the Emmys last night, you can read all the results and watch all the highlights in a span of about 15 minutes here at Warming Glow. I just saved you two hours and 45 minutes. Unless you actually watched the Emmys, in which case you didn’t have anything better going on anyway.

(Special thanks to bohemea and suicideblonde, who captured many of the Emmy images used here today)

Infiniti’s Excellent ‘Community’ Ads

08.30.10 Written by Matt

Crossover promotions don’t have to be soul-crushing examples of corporate synergy, as these Infiniti ads starring the cast of “Community” proved during last night’s Emmys. The one above is my favorite because of this exchange:

Annie: Is everyone bringing a treat for the Emmy party?
Shirley: I made “How I Met Your Muffins.”
Annie: “New Adventures of Old Krispies.”
Abed: “Lost” carrots.
Jeff: That’s ham.
Abed: …or is it?

I’ll say it again: Danny Pudi deserved a nomination for Supporting Actor in a Comedy.

Two more videos below. Enjoy them, then go out and buy an Infiniti SUV. It may be overly expensive and a terrible purchase for our changing world, but I think it’s important to support good advertising.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Bucky Gunts!

08.30.10 Written by Matt

An early favorite for Name of the Year has to be Bucky Gunts, the man who collected an Emmy last night for directing the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics. And it wasn’t just me and thousands of twelve-year-olds who enjoyed his name. Here’s what Ricky Gervais said before presenting the award:

“I hope it’s Bucky Gunts, ’cause I didn’t know you could say that on television. Let’s face it – we’re all Bucky Gunts here. And the Emmy goes to… BUCKY GUNTS!”

After the announcement, John Hodgman — whose voiceover work was an excellent addition to the telecast — chimed in with this:

“Bucky Gunts majored in hotel management at Cornell but changed to television after his thesis on ice-making machines was deemed wildly speculative and probably dangerous. That name again is Bucky Gunts!”

I can’t help but wonder how much of his award comes from his talent, and how much comes from voters wanting to see “Bucky Gunts” on the TV screen. I bet I could win an Emmy if I just had the right name. Look out, world! Here comes Harry Fupa!

And the Emmy Goes to…

08.30.10 Written by Matt

...those.

The Emmy Awards were last night, and as always they provided plenty of reasons for you to be pissed about your favorite show being snubbed. There are a few things you can count on at every Emmys ceremony:

  1. Hilarious, edgy shows like FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Archer” will never get recognized.
  2. Some pud from a CBS comedy will win an Emmy.
  3. Christina Hendricks’s magnificent rack will be on display.

Other than that, it’s not really worth being surprised about anything. The Emmys can never decide whether they want to reward little-watched quality or the dreck that most of America watches, so it’s not like the Academy is some paragon of decision-making that we should be disappointed by.

Full list of winners (with my snappy commentary) after the jump.

The Emmys’ Opening ‘Glee’ Skit

08.30.10 Written by Matt

I’ll be along with a full list of winners and plenty of pictures from last night’s Emmy Awards in a bit, but until then here’s last night’s opening skit led by host Jimmy Fallon and featuring Jon Hamm, Tina Fey, Joel McHale, Nina Dobrev, the cast of “Glee,” and more. I could have done without Kate Gosselin and Randy Jackson, but other than that, it’s a solid opening to an awards show that wasn’t terrible. I mean, I didn’t watch all of it because “Mad Men” and preseason football were on, but what I caught was enjoyable.

Also, I feel compelled to say this… Jimmy Fallon: pretty good. I know the cool thing to do is still be mad about him breaking character in “Saturday Night Live” skits, but he left “SNL” six years ago. Seriously, people are still pissed about Fallon ruining skits that happened in 2002. I just don’t have the kind of energy it takes to hold a grudge like that. I get winded walking up a flight of stairs; there’s no way I can be mad about Fallon breaking character during George Bush’s first term.
