Ratings and Renewals: ‘New Girl’ Renewed, ‘GoT’ Holds Steady, J Lo Ho Scores

04.10.12 Written by Dustin Rowles

Here’s a quick rundown of some recent ratings and renewals news: Yesterday, Fox renewed its Tuesday night lineup, giving “Glee” a fourth season (boo!), “Raising Hope” a third season (cool), and “New Girl” a second (awesome). It’s worth noting that “New Girl” has gotten significantly better over the course of the season, “Raising Hope” hit a lull but has bounced back since its Valentine’s Day episode, and “Glee” blows on every single level. There’s some question about the fate of the characters played by Chris Colfer, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith, who are all graduating, but honestly, I don’t care enough to explore it. The only minor surprise among the renewals is “Raising Hope,” because I thought that Mindy Kaling’s new show would be a shoo-in as a time-slot partner with “New Girl.” That may still be the case, and “Raising Hope” may anchor another comedy block.

Meanwhile, in ratings news, “Game of Thrones” held up nicely in its second week, holding on to 97 percent of its debut ratings. That’s outstanding, suggesting not only that viewers are watching “Game of Thrones” in droves, but they’re not even DVR delaying it. They’re watching it live. “Game of Thrones” had 3.8 million viewers (6.5 million once the later airing was factored in), while over on AMC, “Mad Men” had 2.5 million viewers, and “The Killing” had 1.8 million. It’s worth noting, too, that what little momentum “The Killing” regained last week all but vanished in Sunday night’s episode.

Finally, Jennifer Love Hewitt — a chesty favorite around here, despite protestations of Warming Glow Native Son, Matt — scored sizable ratings with her Lifetime show, “The Client List.” It fetched 2.8 million viewers, Lifetime’s biggest debut since “Drop Dead Diva,” whatever that is. My colleague over on Pajiba reviewed the debut of “The Client List” and summed it up thusly: “Jennifer Love Hewitt is cleavage and cheekbones with a whirling vortex of stupid for a brain.” That is to say: Just because she’s appreciated in a low-cut blouse doesn’t mean anyone has any intention of actually watching her show.

TV GIFs of the Week

02.20.12 Written by Josh

That was an especially great week of TV, now wasn’t it?

Not only did “Archer,” “Justified,” “Raising Hope,” “Up All Night,” and “Saturday Night Live” all have their best episodes of the season, “Eastbound & Down” returned to us, as foulmouthed and fantastic as ever. All those shows are included in this Kate Upton’s assets-sized installment of GIFs of the Week, as well as images of Louis CK’s return to “Parks and Recreation,” the 500th episode of “The Simpsons,” and Jeff Goldblum.

Just Jeff Goldblum.

What’s On Tonight: What Do You Think?

01.31.12 Written by Danger Guerrero

Justified (FX) – Raylan takes on Oxycontin dealers and presumably shoots one or more of them in the chest and/or face. I love this show. (HEY YOU! Go reread my Q&A with “Justified” writer Jon Worley.)

Tosh.0/Key & Peele (Comedy Central) – Season premiere of Tosh, and series premiere of “Key & Peele,” a new sketch show. Sorry guys, not while Raylan’s shooting people. Priorities.

Southland (TNT) – I have never seen this show, but I have heard it’s good, and people get angry when I don’t include it. Here you go. Please do not yell at me.

Inside the Actor’s Studio (Bravo) – George Clooney is the guest. Sometimes I forget George Clooney is an actor. I just think of him as this awesome rich guy who goes to award shows in expensive suits with attractive ladies on his arm. Like Brody Jenner, but with redeeming qualities and a soul.

Glee (FOX) – Tonight’s episode is Michael Jackson-themed. The video for “Jam” was awesome. I would have forfeited 10% of my future earnings to be in a warehouse with Heavy D and Kriss Kross watching Michael Jackson try to play basketball against Michael Jordan. (Video after the jump.)

Celebrity Wife Swap (ABC) – Former WWE wrestler Mick Foley and soap opera actor Antonio Sabato, Jr. swap wives. No two people on Earth are less alike than Mick Foley and Antonio Sabato, Jr.

Ink Master (Spike) – From TV Guide: “A head tattoo causes a fight; naked women appear in the competition; a third artist is eliminated.” This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best possible sentence.

LATE NIGHT GUESTS: Tonight, Leno has Michelle Obama and Mark Harmon from “NCIS.” Letterman, on the other hand, has Bill Murray and Girls’ Generation, a nine member, all girl Korean pop group (who has been discussed on the Uproxx network before). This is what we in the television community refer to as “effective counterprogramming.”

Ranking the 10 Most Profoundly Stupid Characters Currently on Television

01.26.12 Written by Dustin Rowles

The “Ditz” or “Idiot” or “Moron” has always been a staple of television sitcoms, but it seems like they’re growing increasingly dumb in recent years. That may be a function of our own society. After all, in many cases this character archetype exists in order to make the viewer at home feel superior. It’s getting more and more difficult now, however, to create a character dumber than the average Nielsen viewer without adding a functionally retarded person into every sitcom. Remember Ralph and Potsie from “Happy Days,” or Joey from “Friends” or even Screech and Michael Kelso? Compared to modern television’s dumb characters, they seem almost Eisensteinian.

How far has the bar dropped? Here is a ranking of the 10 Most Profoundly Stupid Characters on Current Television Shows (Limit one character per show). The level of intelligence among these characters should speak for itself.

The Return of ‘Community,’ a ‘Party Down’ Movie, and More TCA News

01.09.12 Written by Josh

So, the thing about TV news that breaks after 2 p.m. on a Friday: you’ll probably have to wait until Monday to read our reaction to it, even when it’s about “Community.” It’s a scheduling thing blah blah blah. So, to apologize for our tardiness, we’ve sorted through all the hundreds of masturbatory quotes and inane talking points from this year’s Television Critics Association (Fox and NBC so far, everything else forthcoming) to give you only the tidbits that matter. Also, to sweeten the deal, there’s a reactionary GIF for every item.

Also, quite possibly the least funny show on TV was canceled, so yay!
