Yay! New ‘Community’ Preview!

09.01.11 Written by Matt

Later this fall, or perhaps in winter, many Warming Glow readers will grow tired of my casual tic of writing about how much I love “Community.” But right now, it’s been four months since the last new episode and I’ve spent almost the entire summer NOT talking about “Community.” I’m positively THRILLED that there’s a one-minute promo for the new season (see below).

Granted, a fair chunk of it is the John Goodman scene I posted the other day, and I’m STILL disappointed by the lack of lingering shots of Alison Brie in soft light, but this is definitely enough to get me excited. It’s September! New TV! “Community”! Football! Not sweating my balls off! Autumn is the tits.

First Look at John Goodman on ‘Community’

08.29.11 Written by Matt

Below is a little video from NBC that offers the first look at John Goodman as Vice Dean Laybourne, the head of Greendale’s air conditioner repair school. As you might expect, he uses his tall stature and booming voice to intimidate Jim Rash’s newly goateed Dean Pelton. Other highlights include a rectum joke and a glimpse of Joel McHale looking like a pale, sickly crack addict. Alas, we do not yet get to see Michael K. Williams as the new biology professor or Alison Brie slowly undressing.

“Community” returns September 22nd. Mark you calendars — or better yet, just keep refreshing Warming Glow every hour for the next month. I’ll remind you again before it airs, and I could use some more pageviews.

John Goodman Joins ‘Community’

07.26.11 Written by Matt

"Mark it zero. And then make out."

Right on the heels of the news that Michael K. Williams will be “Community’s” intense new biology professor comes more terrific casting news from NBC’s stellar sitcom: John Goodman will be an adversary to Joel McHale & Co. during the coming season.

Goodman will recur in at least six episodes of NBC’s quirky comedy as Vice Dean Laybourne, the head of Greendale’s air conditioning repair school, and he will become a major foe for both Dean Pelton (played by newly promoted series regular Jim Rash) and our favorite study group.

The Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actor is set to make his first Community appearance in the Season 3 premiere, airing Thursday, Sept. 22 at 8/7c. [TV Line]

I love this casting decision. Not only does John Goodman look like he should be the vice dean of an air conditioning repair school, but I’ve loved him in every role he’s taken for the last twenty years. “Roseanne.” Barton Fink. Lebowski. “Treme.” O Brother Where Art Thou. “Damages.” And yeah, I’ll even throw King Ralph and Coyote Ugly in there. And you know why? Because you can’t fight the moonlight.

John Goodman Was Almost 400 Pounds

06.17.10 Written by Matt

Here’s part of John Goodman’s appearance on “The Late Show” last night, in which Goodman admits to David Letterman that he was “pushing 400.” I think he means 400 pounds, although you can also infer that he was pushing 400 crullers into his mouth every week. And I think he’d be okay with me making that joke, because he displays a pretty good sense of humor throughout the clip.

Goodman’s weight loss really is startling. He is an absolute behemoth of a man on the first season of “Treme,” and it’s good to see him looking healthier. He and my dad were born in the same year (1952), and my dad’s already had a heart attack without being anywhere near the blob of goo that Goodman used to be. It’s gotta be one of those things where a doctor said, “Uh, you’re going to DIE if you don’t lose weight.” And Goodman took the advice seriously because it’s summer and he’s a celebrity. Dear God, take Kirstie Alley if you must, but let us have John Goodman for a few more years.

John Goodman Narrates ‘Best Food’

04.22.10 Written by Matt

Birthday Cat knows he's not getting a second piece of cake

In news that I’m covering solely for the headline, TLC has picked up six episodes of “Best Food Ever,” which will be narrated by John Goodman. Because he’s fat, you see. He eats a lot of food, and would therefore be an expert on which food is the best ever. The series begins May 3rd, and will be just like every other food show that travels around the country and shows you food you want to eat.

However, in the interest of hating on TLC’s programming, here’s a fun quote from the Variety story:

Pickup comes as TLC, coming off the success of “Cake Boss,” “BBQ Pitmasters” and “Ultimate Cake Off,” preps several more food-related series. New shows on tap include “Food Buddha,” “Cupcake Sisters” and “Mega Bites.”

“Our three tentpole genres now are food, families and weddings,” said TLC topper Eileen O’Neill. “As a genre, food is relatable. And it’s having its boom time, much like the property space did a couple of years ago.”

Only three tentpoles for TLC’s programming? How can she forget the midget tentpole? Was it not tall enough to hold up the tent?
