Corgi Dressed as Serenity from ‘Firefly’

11.01.11 Written by Matt

Most of Joss Whedon’s work is overrated thanks to his hyperventilating fans, but this here should only be loved and celebrated: Onyx the corgi dressed as Serenity, the spaceship from “Firefly.”

This makes an intriguing addition to the 101 Halloween corgis I posted on Friday. Between Onyx as Serenity and Pudge as Doctor Who, I could almost be interested in these cult TV shows that geeks keep raving about. I’d actually watch them if they were re-cast and re-shot with all-corgi casts (Nathan Fillion and Christina Hendricks excepted). I mean, a corgi kicking ass would be no less believable than one of Whedon’s waifs knocking out 200-pound dudes. It’d probably be a better actor than Summer Glau, too.

‘Fringe’ Survives Friday Death Slot

02.01.11 Written by Matt

It’s well established that we don’t talk enough about “Fringe” here. The FOX sci-fi series has grown from “marginal ‘X-Files’ knockoff” to “worthy ‘X-Files’ successor” over its three seasons, building a passionate and nerdy fan base along the way. Its recent move from Thursday to Friday nights had those fans scared that the show was teetering on the edge of cancellation, but the ratings suggest otherwise:

For the second week in a row, the sci-fi series has come out on top in its timeslot in the ratings that count, 18-49 adults. Fringe earned a 1.9/6 rating, with 4.57 million total viewers, leading Fox to a win for the night. It even bested its lead-in, Kitchen Nightmares.

While other shows had more total viewers, advertisers most covet the younger 18-49 crowd, and only NBC’s Dateline NBC at 10 p.m. ET could match Fringe‘s rating for the night.

When it comes to the DVR ratings, things get even brighter for the series. Numbers from the first Fringe Friday outing rose an additional 42 percent, driving the 18-49 rating from a 1.9 to a 2.7. [blastr]

I still think it makes sense to put shows with sci-fi/genre appeal on Friday nights. “Battlestar Galactica” did fine on that night, and there’s always gonna be an army of dorks with no social lives sitting around on Fridays, so you may as well cater to them. The only reason Friday has a reputation as the “death slot” is because Joss Whedon’s shows go there. And only the loudest, most annoying nerds watch Joss Whedon shows. The rest of America gets tired of watching skinny girls who can’t act beat up guys twice their size.

YET ANOTHER SET OF ‘LOST’ CREDITS

03.29.10 Written by Matt

We’ve already seen “Lost” credits made in the style of “Baywatch” and Saul Bass, but why stop there? How about some “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” credits for “Lost”? Done and done!

As much as I think that Losties can be too passionate about an overrated show, they at least have better taste than “Buffy” fans. I don’t know what it is with me and Joss Whedon, but I just don’t get into the shows that he makes. I think it has something to do with them sucking so hard.

‘HANK’ & ‘DOLLHOUSE’ CANCELED

11.12.09 Written by Matt

One month ago, I set the over-under on episodes of Kelsey Grammer’s “Hank” that would air at 5.5. Collect your winnings if you took the under, because ABC has canned it after five episodes (and one Great Pumpkin preemption).

The show is filming episode 10 and will stop production after wrapping  that episode. ABC… has no immediate plans to run the remaining five segments. [The Live Feed]

In slightly higher quality cancellation, Fox has axed Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse,” which had low ratings but a small and nerdy fan base. Unlike “Hank,” Fox will air the second season’s remaining episodes. Whedon and the nerdy fan base are sad. Whedon wrote:

I’m off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about.

Gosh, when he puts it that way, I don’t even feel bad for him. I kind of wish I were rich and fired.

‘DOLLHOUSE’ SEASON 2 WILL DUSHKU IN THE FACE

09.22.09 Written by Matt

Season 2 of Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse” kicks off this Friday on Fox, and here are a couple trailers for you lonely folks who’ve made weekend plans with Eliza Dushku. Above is a more plot-oriented explanation of what to expect, while the one below from The Live Feed is more about sex and violence. So if you only have time to watch one of them, you know which one I’d suggest. I’m not a moron, merely a simpleton by choice.
