Potentially the 11 Most Crowd-Pleasing TV Deaths of 2012

04.10.12 Written by Dustin Rowles

There is nothing more satisfying on television than the death of a character we either loathe or love to loathe. How fantastic was it to see, for instance, Agent Stahl get her comeuppance in “Sons of Anarchy,” or The Trinity Killer in “Dexter” or even Mags Bennett in “Justified” (RIP). Those characters were designed specifically to make us hate them, thus making their deaths so much more crowd-pleasing. Then again, there are several other television characters who are hated not by design, but by virtue of bad writing or bad acting, who we hate because they’ve outstayed their welcome, or exhausted their character’s function. They, too, would bring standing ovations in living rooms all across America if they were to meet an untimely demise.

Here are 11 characters I’d like to see die within the next year, starting tonight on the season finale of “Justified.” For different reasons, each death would be met with cheers.

TV GIFs of the Week

04.06.12 Written by Josh

In lieu of an actual intro:

“The North Cafeteria, named after Admiral William North, is located in the western portion of East Hall, gateway to the western half of North Hall, which is named, not after William North, but for its position above the South Wall. It is the most contested and confusing battlefield on Greendale’s campus, next to the English Memorial Spanish Center, named after English Memorial, a Portuguese sailor that discovered Greendale while looking for a fountain that cured syphilis.”

I was dying. My favorite post-hiatus “Community” episode by far. And now, GIFs.

Well Played, Peabody Awards

04.04.12 Written by Danger Guerrero

The 2012 Peabody Award Winners were announced today, and, in addition to shows like “Parks and Recreation,” “Homeland,” “Portlandia,” “Treme,” and “The Colbert Report,” I am pleased to report that HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has been selected as a recipient. It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of the show around here (as are lots of other people, apparently), so I’m happy to see it get recognized by such a prestigious organization. Mo Ryan of The Huffington Post, herself a member of the Peabody board, had this to say about the show:

A dense, compelling saga of intrigue and survival in an unsettled kingdom, “Game of Thrones” examines themes of loyalty, family and ambition against an epic backdrop. Just as a previous Peabody winner, “Battlestar Galactica” transcended the “science fiction” label, “Game of Thrones” is more than just a “fantasy” drama; it’s a deeply relatable story about flawed, complex people trying to figure out the right course of action in a world that is crumbling around them. [HuffPo]

I guess I’d just add one note in conclusion: Between “Justified” winning in 2011 and “Game of Thrones” winning this year, the Peabody board has given awards in consecutive years to shows that depicted criminals getting tased in the ding dong and graphic horse decapitation, respectively. I like your style, Peabodys.

‘Justified’ Recap and Q&A: Strange Bedfellows

04.04.12 Written by Danger Guerrero

While Limehouse was doing his usual “pontificating while preparing pork products” routine last night, he said something that summed up this whole season pretty well: “Money brings together wayward personalities.” In search of some combination of an ill-gotten inheritance and Oxy-related riches, we’ve seen a troubled Detroit mobster, a backwoods criminal mastermind, a slick sociopath, a limping loner with an unexplainable haircut, a terrifying bacon-producing banker, the unpredictable father of a marshal, a battered woman turned pimp, and, now, a displaced orphan all become intertwined in a mangled, devious knot. And between last night’s episode and next week’s finale, it’s up to Raylan to somehow untangle the whole mess. I imagine he’ll just shoot it.

The highlights:

  • NAKED SHOTGUN BONG HOOKER SPEEDWAGON TRAILER PARTIES WITH HOSTAGES (NOTE: This is my favorite bullet point of the whole season.)
  • Boyd “Crazy Eyes” Crowder.
  • Hey, did you know I wrote like 1000 words about Dickie Bennett’s hair last week? Because I did.
  • “You’re the marshal. Isn’t that what you do?” “Yeah, it is. And this is how we do it.”
  • Ava using her feminine wiles at the bank, with all the subtlety “of a marching band.”
  • “I’m sorry, but he escaped from a disease ridden whore factory up in INBRED HOLLER.” “I’m gonna let that one go.”
  • Wynn Duffy on Quarles: “Big stupid baby head.”
  • “Salt … or pepper.” I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that a guy with a giant swastika tattoo would use this imagery, huh?
  • Dickie Bennett, polite kidnapper
  • “You’re just a stupid, craven, hillbilly piece of sh-t.” BAM.
  • Loretta is not a Van Halen fan.
  • CAR BOMBS. RAIL GUNS. INCOMPETENT HOOKERS. DEAD LAWMEN. DEMENTIA-RIDDLED WILD CARDS. OXY-SMOKING. TRAPS. DOUBLE CROSSES. Jesus Mighty, I love this show.

As per usual, GIFs by Chet Manley are on the next page. Also, we’ll be joined by both of our buddies from the show’s writing staff today. VJ Boyd will be dropping by around 12:30, and Jon Worley will be around sometime between 1 and 1:30. Feel free to load up your questions and comments and swing back throughout the day to see what they had to say. I’m equally excited about next week’s finale, and dreading it. Don’t leave me, Raylan and crew! I need you!

What’s On Tonight: A Hair-Raising ‘Justified’

04.03.12 Written by Danger Guerrero

Justified (FX) – I could not possibly be more excited about the prospect of a Dickie Bennett/Boyd Crowder collaboration. I hope they talk about their respective hairstyles for a solid 15 minutes of screen time. (NOTE: Tomorrow we have VJ Boyd AND Jon Worley swinging by the discussion thread.)

New Girl (FOX) – “30 Rock’s” Katrina Bowden guest stars as one of the two women Nick is juggling. Related: I hate Nick.

Dancing with the Stars (ABC) – Results show. Josh’s post from this morning about Jaleel White snapping at his partner, talking about portaying Stefan Urquelle, and crying after dancing to Babyface is everything I dreamed of when it was announced he would be on the show. (Although “Cougar Town” getting yanked off the air tonight in favor of a “DWTS Encore” is somewhat less exciting.)

The Biggest Loser/The Voice/Fashion Star (NBC) – NBC should put Cee-Lo on all three of these shows.

Tabitha Takes Over (Bravo) – I don’t know who Tabitha is or what she is taking over, but I am just going to assume that this is a reality show about former MTV News reporter Tabitha Soren and her new career as a cutthroat corporate raider who takes control of struggling businesses, lays off thousands of people, then sells off the new leaner company for a tidy profit.

Deadliest Catch (Discovery) – Two hours of highlights from season 7. The ocean is not to be trusted, people.

Chopped (Food Network) – Viewers choose the ingredients the contestants must use in tonight’s episode. How about things that actually go together for once? I’m voting for steak, whiskey, and Die Hard on Blu-Ray.

LATE NIGHT GUESTS: Edie Falco and Amy Schumer on Kimmel; Ted Danson on Ferguson; Maya Rudolph and Jason Biggs on Leno; Regis Philbin and Rachel Dratch on Fallon; and Mike Tyson and Chris Elliot on Conan
