Weekend Preview: ‘The Day We Died’

05.06.11 Written by Matt

Fringe (Fox, Friday) — Season finale. Tonight’s episode is titled “The Day We Died,” and the “Fringe” fan community is so excited that they’ve been been breathing into paper bags all day. I posted the creepy trailer for the finale earlier this week; you can watch another two-minute clip on the next page.

Saturday Night Live (NBC) — Tina Fey hosts, with musical guest Ellie Goulding. Once again, I have no idea who the musical guest is, but she apparently played at the royal wedding, so I’m guessing she’s British. Not like it matters: I’m just going to fast forward through her numbers when I watch this on Sunday morning. (Watch Fey’s promos with Kristen Wiig on the next page.)

The Amazing Race (CBS, Sunday) — Season finale. Few things give me greater pleasure than my complete and total ignorance of all things CBS. I relish that blind spot.

CSI: Miami (CBS, Sunday) — Season finale. Once more, with feeling.

Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden (HBO) — Dancing, makeup, and outlandish costumes. Not really my thing, but I can’t fault anyone for getting down to “Poker Face.” Below the SNL video on the next page, you can see a preview clip of Gaga blubbering about her hard life and enemies and blah blah blah. It was really stupid so I added a nice GIF of her air-humping below that.

‘SNL’ Finale: JT and Lady Gaga

04.20.11 Written by Matt

Good news: Justin Timberlake has been confirmed as the host of the season finale of “Saturday Night Live” on May 21st. He’ll be joined by musical guest Lady Gaga. It will be Timberlake’s fourth time hosting; Gaga last appeared on the show in October 2009.

It’s hard to believe that Timberlake has only hosted the show three times dating back to 2003, given how many memorable sketches he’s appeared in — Dick in a Box, Motherlover, the Single Ladies dance, Breakfast Competition, the Barry Gibb Talk Show, Immigrant Tale, and Hip Hop Kids, to name a few (although it’s worth noting that he’s made some non-hosting appearances). Along with Jon Hamm, he’s probably the best “SNL” host today. Not bad for someone who used to be a boy band star with Top Ramen hair.

A ‘Glee’ Lady Gaga Episode. Of Course.

04.07.11 Written by Matt

If there’s one thing that “Glee” is really good at, it’s putting aside plot and character development in order to have standalone episodes dedicated to a single pop star in which the singer’s top hits are awkwardly shoehorned into a clunky premise. On that note, get ready for a 90-minute Lady Gaga episode on April 26th.

In the “Born This Way” episode, MR. SCHUESTER (Matthew Morrison) teaches the glee club a valuable lesson about self-acceptance and embracing what makes you unique through the music of Lady Gaga. [HeldenFiles]

…and then they all go out for ice cream.

It’s my understanding that this will feature Gaga’s music but not an appearance from the star herself, making it more like the Madonna episode than the Britney Spears episode. Which seems fitting, since Gaga is just ripping off Madonna’s songs anyway.

Haha, Bieber Got Shut Out

02.14.11 Written by Matt

Say what you will about the Grammys — and believe me, I have plenty bad to say about any organization that gives an award to Train — I have to credit last night’s show for creating some magnificent and ridiculous spectacles: Lady Gaga arriving in an egg, Cee Lo Green dressed as a bird playing with muppets, and Mick Jagger moving around like someone who wasn’t born during World War II.

As for the actual awards, it was a fair mix of “What is the world coming to?” and “Maybe there’s hope for us after all.” Examples of the former: Lady Antebellum winning both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Examples of the latter: Justin Bieber getting shut out, and Arcade Fire miraculously winning Album of the Year. Below, I’ve got some scattered thoughts on the show, with videos of performances and the full list of winners on the following pages.

Weekend Preview: Grammys, I Guess

02.11.11 Written by Matt

The 53rd Grammy Awards (CBS, Sunday) — Yes, the Grammys are a joke, but this will have to suffice because all the respectable music critics are, like, totally over awards shows, man. For Kanye fans, set your alarm clock for next year, because My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy came out after the September 30th eligibility deadline. Way to stay timely, Grammys. Scheduled to perform: Eminem and Dr. Dre, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga (rumored to be playing with Muse, which could actually be pretty cool). How much you wanna bet she’s taken the gramophones off the awards she won last year and fashioned them into a chestplate?

Saturday Night Live (NBC) — Russell Brand hosts with musical guest Chris Brown, who of course tried his hardest to punch the attractiveness off of Rihanna. I’m torn about Brand: I find his stand-up comedy atrocious, but I couldn’t help but like him in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.

The British Oscars (BBC America, Sunday) — Okay, so technically they’re called the BAFTA Awards, but I prefer to get to the point. Nominated for top awards are The King’s Speech and a bunch of movies that are going to lose to The King’s Speech.

Bob’s Burgers (Fox, Sunday) — I still haven’t caught an episode of this yet, and it’s really bothering me. Here’s hoping I finally remember to DVR it.

Onion News Network/Portlandia (IFC, Friday) — More shows I keep forgetting to DVR. I’m really gonna do it, people! (Unless I forget.)

The Sunset Limited (HBO, Saturday) — Based on a play by Cormac McCarthy, directed by Tommy Lee Jones, and starring Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. This is going to win every Golden Globe and Emmy award possible for a TV movie.
