‘Mad Men’ Had Its Own Joffrey-Slapping Moment Last Night

04.16.12 Written by Danger Guerrero

In the Great Uproxx Sunday Night Television Compromise of 2012, we here at Warming Glow were able to claim the discussion/GIF posts for “Game of Thrones,” while our colleagues at the Uproxx mothership were awarded the same related to “Mad Men.” For the most part, we have been pleased with this outcome. For all the slow-burning intensity and deep character study on “Mad Men,” there’s just something about gratuitous nudity and GIFs of insufferable child monarchs getting slapped in the face that really does it for us. We are simple people with simple desires.

BUT, every now and then, “Mad Men” goes all holy crap on us, and it feels like the type of thing we would be irresponsible to not mention here. Last night was one of those nights, for two important reasons (screencapped and GIFed by the inimitable @bubbaprog): First of all, Don’s jacket (see above). It is so loud and disorienting that I imagine people assume a helicopter is hovering nearby whenever he enters a room. I must have it at once. Second, the GIF posted below, which is “Mad Men’s” own “Joffrey getting slapped” moment. It was a long time coming, and it was delicious. I recommend you watch it for 10-15 minutes straight, then head over to the main page for their discussion thread and talk about how great it is.

Weekend Preview: ‘Girls’ Premieres, ‘Eastbound & Down’ Ends

04.13.12 Written by Danger Guerrero

Girls (HBO, Sunday) – I am definitely looking forward to this new comedy, created by Tiny Furniture’s Lena Dunham and produced by Judd Apatow, but JESUS PETE do people like writing about it. Splitsider put together this list of 24 “thinkpieces” about the show, and that doesn’t even include my favorite take on it, by Andy Greenwald at Grantland. He made a Beastie Boys reference in the headline. That is a direct route to my heart. (Trailer after the jump.)

Eastbound & Down (HBO) – Series finale. The saga of Kenny Powers comes to an end Sunday night. Goodnight, sweet prince. Sweet, belligerent, xenophobic prince.

Mad Men (AMC, Sunday) – Someone should make a Tumblr titled Peggy Counting Money, and just post this GIF every hour on the hour until the end of time.

Game of Thrones (HBO, Sunday) – TV Guide has an 80-word summary of the show in their listings, and not once do they mention whether or not Joffrey gets slapped. THE PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW, TV GUIDE.

Saturday Night Live (NBC, Saturday) – Josh Brolin hosts, with musical guest Gotye. Josh does the recaps of the show, but I want it on the record that Bobby Moynihan’s Drunk Uncle character brings me almost an endless amount of joy.

The Finder/Fringe (FOX, Friday) – 50 Cent guest-starred on “The Finder” last week, and his character’s name was Gangsta Glade. I just wanted you all to know that.

Titanic (ABC, Saturday/Sunday) – ABC is running this four-hour miniseries over the weekend (three hours airing Saturday night, and the one-hour conclusion on Sunday). If human beings had any sense at all, the sinking of the Titanic would have put an end the cruise ship industry. Go to a resort instead. Resorts don’t sink.

The Good Wife (CBS, Sunday) – “OK, I’ve got an idea… what if, for the big trial — and just here me out — Franklin & Bash were opposing counsel.” – Me, if I wrote for “The Good Wife.”

The Client List (Lifetime, Sunday) – This show got a ton of press by having Jennifer Love Hewitt do photoshoots and videos with her cleavage hanging out, then got even more press by covering it up and shrinking it. Someone at Lifetime is a goddamn genius.

The Hiatus Effect Is Real, and It’s Spectacular

04.13.12 Written by Dustin Rowles

During “Community’s” hiatus, we made an argument that the hiatus could actually be good for the show because, we reasoned, the ratings for every other sitcom on NBC was dropping, so by comparison, “Community’s” ratings would look better. We were both right and wrong. The hiatus was good for the show, but not because “Community’s” flat ratings stood out by comparison to the other flailing NBC sitcoms. It was because “Community’s” ratings actually soared upon its return. After a three-month hiatus, “Community” returned with a huge ratings boost, with 36 percent more viewers and 47 percent more viewers in the key demo.

The hiatus effect isn’t isolated to just “Community,” but it is unusual for the hiatus effect to boost ratings on sitcoms. Typically, serialized dramas with ongoing storylines will see a big boost after a long hiatus, while sitcoms fall off. Take “Mad Men,” for instance. AFter an 18 month hiatus, it added 600,000 viewers, reaching a new series high. “Breaking Bad” has seen substantial gains after very nine-month hiatus, and “Game of Thrones” had a huge boost in its second season. But short-hiatuses, like the one that “Modern Family” had been on, are not as good for sitcoms. That show saw a 22 percent drop this week, for instance.

The reason? Social media buzz, so believes Ad Age and Blufin Labs, which worked out this nifty little chart.

TV GIFs of the Week

04.13.12 Written by Josh

I can never think of anything to write for these GIF intros (other than: here are GIFs from “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” “Justified,” “Game of Thrones,” etc.), so you should use the comments section as a free-for-all. Wanna talk about Joss Whedon? Sure! (I’m calling it now: Burnsy is wrong.) That amazing Megadeth/Motörhead post? Obviously. Jeff’s dumb speech at the end of an otherwise excellent episode of “Community”? Certainly.

But we all know what we’re REALLY going to talk about: that Three Stooges trailer, where Sean Hayes and Professor Gigglepepper flick a piece of food toward a dolphin, and it lands in the dolphin’s blowhole. That’s classic mirth-making, is what that is. I wish I had a GIF of it. Speaking of…to the GIFs!

Potentially the 11 Most Crowd-Pleasing TV Deaths of 2012

04.10.12 Written by Dustin Rowles

There is nothing more satisfying on television than the death of a character we either loathe or love to loathe. How fantastic was it to see, for instance, Agent Stahl get her comeuppance in “Sons of Anarchy,” or The Trinity Killer in “Dexter” or even Mags Bennett in “Justified” (RIP). Those characters were designed specifically to make us hate them, thus making their deaths so much more crowd-pleasing. Then again, there are several other television characters who are hated not by design, but by virtue of bad writing or bad acting, who we hate because they’ve outstayed their welcome, or exhausted their character’s function. They, too, would bring standing ovations in living rooms all across America if they were to meet an untimely demise.

Here are 11 characters I’d like to see die within the next year, starting tonight on the season finale of “Justified.” For different reasons, each death would be met with cheers.
