Stanley from ‘The Office’ Is Doing Well

11.30.11 Written by Matt

Leslie David Baker is better known as Stanley from “The Office,” a no-nonsense character who for years served as an unsmiling counterbalance to Michael Scott’s juvenile antics. Now Baker has recorded a heavily-autotuned party anthem called “2 Be Simple,” and I cannot for the life of me figure out of it’s ironic or serious. In the music video below, Baker wanders around his mansion in pajamas and a robe, enjoys a harem of sexy white girls, lords over a wild pool party, and shuns the advances of a peeping tom neighbor. It all feels vaguely like an ’80s sex comedy, and I can’t figure out why it exists, except for the likelihood that Baker woke up one day and said, “I’m Stanley from ‘The Office,’ and I wanna make a music video with some sexy white girls.” Well done, sir. Opportunity not missed.

Hell Yes: Buscemi & the Black Keys on ‘SNL’

11.17.11 Written by Matt

Rolling Stone is reporting that Steve Buscemi will host the December 3rd episode of “Saturday Night Live” with musical guest the Black Keys. The blues-rock duo played the show earlier this year (in January when Jim Carrey hosted), but it will be Buscemi’s first time hosting since his premiere gig in 1998.

I’m huge on this not only because I like bare-bones guitar-and-drums rock and roll (I’m white), but because Buscemi’s leading role on “Boardwalk Empire” has dampened my impression of him as a quirky character actor. Two seasons of watching Nucky Thompson yell at people and be in charge has put all those weird supporting roles on the back burner of my brain: Reservoir Dogs, The Big Lebowski, Fargo, Con Air, Ghost World… and who can forget his scene-stealing turn as Crazy Eyes in Mr. Deeds? The Oscars cheated him, I say.

Basically, Steve Buscemi should be hosting the show EVERY year.

Here’s Childish Gambino on ‘Conan’

11.16.11 Written by Matt

Childish Gambino performed on “Conan” last night, and I’m getting really tired of calling Donald Glover Childish Gambino. I understand perfectly well that that’s his stage name for his musical career, but it’s not like he’s Batman. He’s right there on stage, not wearing a mask. I can see that he’s successful actor Donald Glover rapping about sex. “No! When he’s wearing a hoodie, he’s Childish Gambino!” All right, whatever.

Anyway, video of his performance of “Heartbeat” is below. It’s got a dirty-ass beat that sounds like The Gap Band’s “You Dropped a Bomb on Me,” and it contains the notable diss “He just a fake dude who blog in all caps.” HOW DARE YOU, SIR. THIS IS HOW I EXPRESS MYSELF.

What’s on Tonight: MMJ on VD

11.10.11 Written by Matt

The Vampire Diaries (CW) — Fall finale. Formerly credible band My Morning Jacket play a high school’s homecoming dance. No less believable than vampires, I suppose.

Vietnam in HD (History) — The final two episodes — “A Changing War” and “Peace with Honor” — conclude the series. I can’t wait to watch this entire series tomorrow during Veterans Day. And even though I’m taking the day off, don’t worry: Danger Guerrero will be in to give you some corgis and a weekend preview.

Community (NBC) — I saw something really cool on Tumblr that compared last week’s gay-riffic episode to one of Stefon’s clubs on “Saturday Night Live.” “The city’s hottest club is COMMUNITY. It has everything: Blogons. Wet wipes. A guy dressed like Tron. Fabulous cross-dressing phenomenon Urbana Champagne. Black Hitler. And what’s that in the corner? Is that Inspector Spacetime? No. It’s an astronaut making paninis. The first 500 people through the door get an ivory toupee.” (Tonight’s episode: Annie moves in with Abed and Troy.)

Thursday Night Football (NFL Network) — Raiders at Chargers. There’s gonna be a live-blog at KSK, but I’m going to miss it because I’ve got tickets to Louis C.K.’s show tonight. Happy birthday to me, bitches.

Braxton Family Values (We) — Season 2 premiere. I didn’t even realize Toni Braxton had a reality show with her four sisters (Tamar, Traci, Trina, and Towanda).

Beavis and Butt-Head (MTV) — Get some TP for your bunghole, because Beavis’s alter ego the Great Cornholio returns in tonight’s episode. When I was 15, I laughed so hard from the “bunghole” line that I cried. I regret nothing.

What’s on Tonight: R.I.P. Heavy D

11.08.11 Written by Matt

Tonight’s listings come with a big bummer: rapper Heavy D has passed away at the age of 44. Now that we’ve found out this terrible news, what are we gonna dooooo… with iiiiiiit?

Glee (Fox) — Kurt and Blaine have virgin gay sex with each other, and of course the Parents Television Council has its temple garments in a bunch over a TV show portraying something that happens.

Roll Tide/War Eagle (ESPN) — A new documentary about the rivalry between Alabama and Auburn, the last two NCAA football champions. It’s probably the only thing that makes the state of Alabama noteworthy on a national level.

90210 (CW) — Vinny Guadagnino from “Jersey Shore” guest stars in an episode where the kids go to Las Vegas. Because that’s what high school kids do: go someplace where a 21+ age limit is strictly enforced everywhere you go.

Frontline (PBS) — Meredith Blake goes inside the opposition movement in Syria. Darren Rovell wants to know why they aren’t leading with Kim Kardashian’s divorce.

Sons of Anarchy (FX) — There’s a lot of positive buzz about this week’s episode, as Clay scrambles to get renege on the hit he put out on Tara — except the cartel is all, “Sorry, no takebacks.”
