NatGeo: Fish Communicate by Farting

10.20.11 Written by Matt

No matter what else you see today, this is certain to be the best video about herring farts. Everything you need to know about this NatGeo clip can be gleaned from the YouTube page:

Herring have a secret, and funny, way of communicating with each other — by farting. They just have to hope neighboring predators aren’t listening in. [YouTube via UniqueDaily]

Humans can also communicate by farting. It’s actually my preferred method for reviewing new CBS comedies.

If you want to know more about fish farts — and who doesn’t? — I will happily direct you to the 2003 U.K. study that first revealed the phenomenon:

‘Adult Baby’ Threatens Suicide If He Loses His Social Security

05.18.11 Written by Matt

A couple weeks ago, I posted a clip from NatGeo’s “Taboo” that detailed grossly obese 30-year-old Stanley Thornton’s “adult baby” fantasy, which he lives out with the help of his grossly obese roommate, Sandra Dias. Neither have a job, and both collect Social Security checks. That got the attention of Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), one of Congress’s premiere waste-watchers.

“Given that Mr. Thornton is able to determine what is appropriate attire and actions in public, drive himself to complete errands, design and custom-make baby furniture to support a 350-pound adult and run an Internet support group, it is possible that he has been improperly collecting disability benefits for a period of time,” Mr. Coburn wrote in a letter Monday to Inspector General Patrick P. O’Carroll Jr. [Washington Times]

I won’t get into the caveat necessary for a Moonie newspaper, but the Times emailed Thornton for a response, and it is nothing short of sublime.

WHAT THE WHAT?

05.03.11 Written by Matt

I consider myself a relatively open-minded person. I have no problem with gay marriage. I’ll befriend people of any race as long as they’re attractive. I understand and accept that young people will always wear clothes I think are stupid. I’m even okay with women voting and driving cars, just as long as they don’t do it while they’re having their period.

But THIS… This is truly F’d up. In the clip from Nat Geo’s “Taboo” below, you’ll see a man who spends half his life as an “adult baby.” He plays with Legos in an adult-sized playpen, sucks on a pacifier, wears a diaper, and gets fed by a former nurse who indulges his fantasy. It is DARK AS HELL.

I just don’t get why any adult would want to be a baby, because being an adult owns so hard. You get to drink booze and stay up late and have sex and watch HBO. That totally makes the crappy stuff like paying bills worthwhile. Although I suppose it would be pretty cool to crap your pants at your whim.

Honey Badger Gets Gay Voiceover

02.10.11 Written by Matt

This NatGeo Wild clip of the honey badger has been around for ages — I wrote about it last July at KSK — but it has new narration by someone named Randall, and I have to admit that he’s way better than whichever stuffy British dude originally narrated it. National Geographic needs to hire Randall immediately. Of course, I wouldn’t learn anything watching a NatGeo show hosted by Randall, but I’d be massively entertained. And isn’t that what television’s all about?

What’s on Tonight: INTENSITY!

12.14.10 Written by Matt

Explorer: Born to Rage? (National Geographic) — As noted earlier, Henry Rollins hosts this investigation of the newly discovered warrior gene. Read my interview with Rollins here.

Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Christmas (BBC America) — MERRY FOKIN’ CHRISTMAS, ARSEHOLE.

The Biggest Loser (NBC) — Season finale. On one hand, it’s really cool to see former tubs of lard take pride in their newfound physical fitness. On the other, keep your shirts on, people. You still have all that excess skin hanging off you from when you were fat. You look like Buffalo Bill’s ultimate catch.

Third Reich: The Rise (History) — Finally, a break from “Ice Road Truckers” and “Pawn Stars” to showcase what the History Channel does best: NAZIS! You know, the Holocaust gets so many headlines, it’s nice to see the Beer Hall Putsch and the Reischstag fire get some attention. (Followed by “Hitler’s Family” at 11 p.m. Eastern.)

Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection (Bravo) — The Real Housewives of somewhere appear on this 75-minute episode. GRRRR EXTREME FASHION FOR WOMEN AND GAYS!
