‘Cash Cab’ Killed a Guy

07.18.11 Written by Matt

Yikes: on Saturday night, the Canadian version of “Cash Cab” finished up a night of shooting by hitting and killing a 61-year-old pedestrian.

The show had finished filming for the night and a producer was driving the mock yellow cab back to a storage area when the accident occurred, the show’s production company, Castlewood Productions Inc., told The Vancouver Sun.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his friends and his family. My heart also goes out to the driver of the vehicle, a member of our technical staff, who is shaken and devastated by this tragic accident, as is our entire team,” the company’s president, Andrew Burnstein, told The Sun. [NY Daily News]

No charges have been filed, but if that producer drinks on the job half as much as I do, she’s in serious trouble. And yeah, I’m assuming the producer was a woman. Whether or not that’s true, I stand by the logic that helped me jump to that conclusion. JOURNALISM!

‘Repo Games’ Airs Real-Life Shooting

07.13.11 Written by Matt

As I mentioned in yesterday’s listings, a man on “Repo Games” — the game show where indebted contestants try to prevent their cars from being repossessed — grew angry at the trucks blocking his driveway and pulled a gun. What I didn’t realize is that he actually fired shots at the crew, and the incident was subsequently aired.

The Repo Games host remembered the moment the suspect [Carlos Barron] came out. He said: “All of a sudden this dude stepped back like 5 or 6 feet, (and) pulls out a gun!”

The cast, crew and contestants were seen running for their lives when they realized the suspect was armed, and firing several shots.

North Las Vegas Police said when they tried to contact Barron, he barricaded himself inside a home. Officers said after a two hour standoff Barron left a rear window, and tried to run. He was taken into custody with the help of a K-9 dog. [Fox 5 Vegas]

There’s a newscast video below that has a clip of the incident, and there are some excellent details to be savored, such as a neighbor named Sleep Kennard and the name of the street where the shooting occurred: Vigilante Court. “You know, when I moved to Vigilante Court, I never thought that a gun owner would take matters into his own hands like that. That’s the whole reason I moved away from Violent Lunatic Avenue.”

Drunk Guy Trashes Letterman Theater

07.11.11 Written by Matt

James Whittemore, a 22-year-old aspiring actor, was arrested early Sunday morning after he concluded a drunken bender by smashing the glass doors and lobby of the Ed Sullivan Theater, the home of “The Late Show with David Letterman.” Stand by for hilarious reporting from the New York Daily News

Whittemore, tore through the box-office and lobby of the historic Ed Sullivan Theater, shattering the front doors and upending trash cans, a source close to the investigation said.

Whittemore, of Harlem, apparently used only his feet to kick in the doors, police sources said.

I know that it’s a shame to do something like that to a historic old theater, but man… that sounds like a blast. When I was 22, one of my favorite things to do in the world was get drunk and break things. Game respect game.

Relax Lady, It’s for Animal Planet

06.17.11 Written by Matt

"Don't hold back, ladies. This is for posterity."

Lenni Todd, a 58-year-old news cameraman for Pittsburgh’s WTAE (an ABC affiliate), was arrested on misdemeanor sexual assault charges after he groped a woman under the guise of filming a story. What follows is the work of a horny criminal mastermind.

Officers said Todd arrived in a station vehicle and had equipment with company logos. However, police said they later learned Todd was off-duty at the time of the alleged incident.

Police said Todd lied to the woman, saying he was going to film her for a story and that part of the story would be shared with the Animal Planet network.

According to police documents, the woman said Todd placed his hand inside her shirt and then grabbed her bare buttocks. Todd is also accused of taking photographs as her shirt was lifted up and as her pants were pulled down. [WPXI]

Don’t take this the pervy way, but MAN do I wish I had been there. Not for the groping, but for that legendary ruse to fondle a woman. “Excuse me, ma’am? I’m from a local news affiliate, and Animal Planet wanted me to record some footage of me groping you. Now if you’ll just lift up your shirt…”

Sean Bean Stabbed in Bar Fight, Orders Another Drink

06.14.11 Written by Matt

"Better make it a double, lad."

On Sunday, when “Game of Thrones” fans were reacting to a twist involving Sean Bean’s Lord Eddard Stark, Bean was busy defending the honor of a 22-year-old topless model, a chivalrous act that got him punched in the eye and stabbed in the arm with a broken glass. Then he ordered himself another drink. BADASS.

According to the Daily Mail, the incident kicked off when the 52-year-old Bean and 22-year-old Playboy bunny April Summers (inset, one year younger than Bean’s oldest daughter) went outside Camden’s Hill Bar and Brasserie to smoke. A passerby spotted the duo (or at least one half of the duo) and began making lewd comments, leading Bean to confront the big talker.

All was seemingly well until the stranger returned later on, at which point a scuffle broke out, and Bean was reportedly punched in the face, causing a bruise over his eye, and stabbed in the arm with broken glass. Despite his wounds, Bean refused any medical attention and opted not to go to a hospital.

Instead, the actor accepted a first aid kit from the bar staff, then ordered another drink. [E!]

So… yeah. That’s why Sean Bean gets typecast in the role of “badass who gets killed.” But what happened to the attacker? Can we get Peter Dinklage to slap him for ten minutes straight?
