Weekend Preview: ‘Chuck’ Go Bye Bye

01.27.12 Written by Danger Guerrero

Chuck (NBC, Friday) – “Chuck” never got a lot of coverage around here, but it did have a weirdly devoted fanbase who stuck with it through a number of schedule changes. The show comes to its conclusion tonight, and I think I speak for the majority of Americans when I say, “Okay.”

Luck (HBO, Sunday) – Pilot episode. HBO aired this back in December as a sneak peek, but the new David Milch series starring Dustin Hoffman starts for real this Sunday night. I miss Barbaro. I said it.

Downton Abbey (PBS, Sunday) – Actual conversation I heard recently between two people who are clearly soulmates: HUSBAND: I like “Downton Abbey.” WIFE: Who’s in it? HUSBAND: Oh.. um… who’s that one British actress? WIFE: Maggie Smith? HUSBAND: Yeah, her.

The Good Wife (CBS, Sunday) – Sometimes watching this show makes me want to buckle down and get serious about my law career. Other times someone on the show will be eating Chinese food and it makes me want to order dumplings. My point here is that I’m easily influenced and often hungry.

Bayou Billionaires (CMT, Saturday) – I love you, you crazy hillbillies. I won’t watch your show, but I love you.

The Simpsons/Napoleon Dynamite/Family Guy/American Dad (FOX, Sunday) – Whenever people talk about “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, they say things like “he’s more hands off now” or “he’s not around much” or “Seth likes to have a drink.” This leads me to believe he is doing life properly.

Californication/House of Lies/Shameless (Showtime, Sunday) – Boobs.

John Mulaney: New in Town (Comedy Central, Saturday) – I mentioned the other day that John Mulaney is one of my favorite comedians. Not only was his last album one of the best I’ve heard in a while, he’s also the writer at SNL who’s responsible for the Stefon segments on Update. What I failed to mention is that because I am a big fancy TV blogger now, I got an advance copy of his new special earlier this week and it’s really terrific. You need to watch this Saturday night and/or get the album when it comes out on the 31st or I don’t see how we can be friends. (Clip after the jump.)

The 50 Best Jokes from the Roast of Charlie Sheen

09.20.11 Written by Matt

The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen was last night, and if you didn’t watch it, you must not share my love of jokes about hookers and spousal abuse. Jeffrey Ross, Anthony Jeselnik, and Amy Schumer turned in the best performances, while the lamest sets belonged to Jon Lovitz and Steve-O.

Here are most of my favorite jokes from the roast. It’s not a complete list because I was drinking and I got tired of pausing the TV to write stuff down. And it’s almost certainly not 50 jokes; that’s just a number that was nice and round and catchy for SEO purposes. AND NOW YOU KNOW THE UGLY TRUTH ABOUT BLOGGING.

Family Guy’s Final Star Wars Spoof

11.19.10 Written by Matt

This is the trailer for “It’s a Trap!,” the “Family Guy” parody of Return of the Jedi that will complete Seth MacFarlane’s trilogy. As with ”Something, Something, Something, Dark Side” (the parody of The Empire Strikes Back), this will be released on DVD before it airs on Fox.

This series has never really done it for me — nothing in the video so much as made me smile — but it’s not like I can fault MacFarlane for making these. This last spoof is gonna make him a boatload of cash, which he can leave at the dock with his yacht of cash and barge of cash. I’m not sure why he keeps all of his cash on seafaring vessels. Hollywood people tend to be eccentric.

VILLAGE PEOPLE COP IS KIND OF A DICK

03.23.10 Written by Matt

cleveland-show-crap

Victor Willis, the guy who performed as the cop in the Village People, is threatening to sue Fox for insinuating that he provided the voiceover for a likeness of himself that appeared on “The Cleveland Show.” Wow, that’s incredible. Someone actually saw an episode of “The Cleveland Show.”

The episode… featured an animated version of the Village People cop parading around in shorts before “eventually jumping on the backside of a male after effeminately yelling, ‘Dog pile!’”

[His lawyer] added: “Victor is appalled by the show’s portrayal. He never wore shorts as the original Village People lead singer and cop. So how does Fox justify such an outright false portrayal, while publishing to the world that Victor Willis did the voiceover? And now it’s all over the internet, clearly suggesting to the public that the cop character portrayed in the show is Victor Willis.” [Digital Spy]

Yeah! What the hell?!? He was OBVIOUSLY the butch one!

I was going to say that this litigious nancy needs to untwist his panties, but then I actually suffered through eight and a half minutes of the episode in question to get the screen capture you see above. And dear sweet Jesus, that show makes cancer look like Dave Chappelle. I mean, “Family Guy” can be kind of harmless and watchable, but “Cleveland” is like waking up with an aborted fetus in your bed. It is AWFUL. So sue away, oversensitive gay has-been. Take ‘em for all they’re worth.

ANOTHER FAMILY GUY STAR WARS THING

11.27.09 Written by Matt

This is the trailer for the second installment of “Family Guy’s” retelling of the Star Wars franchise, a spoof of The Empire Strikes Back called “Something Something Something Dark Side.” You probably remember “Blue Harvest,” the Episode IV spoof that kicked off Season 6 of “Family Guy” two years ago. And if you don’t, meh, you didn’t miss all that much — a couple funny gags that will appeal to people who grew up on Star Wars.

That’s my early assessment of this one, too. A Star Wars spoof is neither timely nor necessary, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s bad. Once again, I simply have no strong feelings either way for Seth MacFarlane. He’s just a hustler making millions of dollars, and I’d do the exact same thing if I could paste throwaway gags about pop culture into mimeographs of the same show. Haters to the left, y’all.
