Happy Veterans Day

11.11.11 Written by Danger Guerrero

Happy Veterans Day, everybody. As Matt mentioned yesterday, he’s taking a much-deserved day off. I’ll be dropping by a little later for a Corgi Friday post and a Weekend Preview, but other than that it’s gonna be a little slow around here today. Although, if you’re looking for a good read, Matt wrote a great piece on being a veteran for The Classical. I highly recommend you check it out. Lest we forget, the dude can write a little bit.

I hope you all enjoy your day off if you get one, but just don’t forget why you’re able to sleep in today. And if you’re that bored by our absence here, you could always put your time to good use by calling some veterans you know and thanking them for their service, or volunteering somewhere that deals with veterans’ issues. I’m sure it would be appreciated.

So, on behalf of the Uproxx family, a sincere thanks to all those who have served or are currently serving. Take us home, Ray.

Site News: Brief Interlude

11.03.11 Written by Matt

I gotta bounce early to go to tonight’s taping of “Conan” with guest Louis C.K. Hooray for me, tough titty for you. Danger Guerrero will be along with some posts to close the day out, then he’s running things tomorrow, too. You guys know the rules: non-stop parties and drinking all the time until I get back. Have fun.

Site News: Fancy New Comment Features!

10.10.11 Written by Danger Guerrero

You know, commenters, you and I have never really talked. I love what you do down there below these posts. I just read your stuff and I laugh and laugh. Let me run this by you, because you’re sharp guys and gals. We’re thinking about improving the comments section. How would you feel about making a change? Specifically, we’re adding these new features:

  • A universal login that lets you comment on all the Uproxx sites with having to sign in separately to each one.
  • Your own commenter profile, with easily uploaded avatars.
  • The ability to reply to or “like” comments left by others, which will really streamline our political flame wars.
  • The ability to sign in with Twitter or Facebook.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! As explained The Cajun Boy at the Uproxx flagship, there’s more to come, including the ability to direct message each other (you poor, poor lady commenters), threaded replying, and the ability to earn awards and badges and stuff for various achievements. And as if ALL THAT wasn’t enough, the Gamma Squad guys are giving away a… uh… a something. I don’t know what it is, but it’s free!

[UPDATE: The Uproxx home page is also offering prizes, reaching into the hundreds of dollars! Me? Still offering bupkis.]

As someone who spends entirely too much time in the various Uproxx comments sections, I’m very much looking forward to these changes. I think it will really simplify things and help create/grow a vibrant community amongst the readership. So sign in, set up your profile, tinker around with all the new features, and let us know what you think. Even you, people who read the posts but never comment. Get involved!

(*reads 7000 comments about how much the new features “suck” or are not working properly on Day 1*)

Oh, right. The Internet.

Site News: All New Facebook Fun

10.06.11 Written by Matt

Hey guys, I’m not sure how familiar you are with internet trends, but apparently “the facebook” is a pretty big deal. Warming Glow has had a Facebook page for like a hundred years now, but it was always an autofeed that did boring, robotic posts with nothing more than the headline to WG stories.

UNTIL NOW. I now operate the NEW Warming Glow facebook page. Links to the stories here will now have a little blurb from ME, the actual blogger! In addition, I’ll be adding new corgi pictures to the wall whenever I don’t feel like waiting for Corgi Friday, which is often. So please, hit that little thumbs-up button to “like” Warming Glow. If you’ve already liked WG but hid our posts from your feed because it was boring, change your settings because YOU’RE MISSING OUT ON CORGIS.

Fun fact: if you click on the links between Warming Glow and WG’s facebook page enough, eventually Mark Zuckerberg and I make out. Hooray, social media! Integrated user experience! New verticals! Buzzwords for everyone!

Site News: Jamaican Me Crazy!

Great news, everybody! You’re getting an awesome guest editor for the rest of the week!

Translation: I’m getting the F out of here. Unplugging from the Internet, flying to the undisclosed tropical location pictured here, and not looking at a computer for a week. The only things on my agenda are adding color to my translucent skin and drinking rum out of coconuts. Maybe some snorkeling, assuming that’s a sex act.

But don’t worry, Warming Glow’s gonna hum along just fine. In his first regular post-bar-exam gig, Danger Guerrero’s going to be filling as the HBIC, while Burnsy’s got some riffs this afternoon, and Josh Kurp has promised that this week’s list will make amends for him saying that he likes “Glee.” If that’s not enough to keep you coming back, I’ve already completed and scheduled a VERY special edition of Corgi Friday that’s gonna put you in a great mood as you enter the weekend.

I’ll be back full-time next Tuesday. Until then, have fun with Danger — but don’t give him too many compliments. He works better when he’s depressed.
