The Han Solo/Greedo ‘Justified’ Promo

01.28.11 Written by Matt

FX debuted a new promo for “Justified” this week, and it manages to be kinda geeky while stoking the flames of my heterosexual man-crush on Timothy Olyphant (video below).

Throughout Season 1 of “Justified,” Raylan Givens (Olyphant) frequently displayed a working knowledge of pop culture and the Westerns that inspired the feel of the show, but this one may take the cake: while sitting in a dark bar with a bad guy, Raylan explains the Han Shot First controversy from Star Wars as a way of telling the bad guy that he’s perfectly willing to shoot him and falsify evidence to justify it (it’s also a subtle callback to the first scene of the series premiere). Why hello, nerd boner. I didn’t see you come in.

The new season starts February 9th. It’s the only thing that can save me from post-Super Bowl depression. Watch it or don’t show your face around here.

Han Solo Was in ‘Firefly’ (Kind Of)

01.13.11 Written by Matt

When I heard that Han Solo was in Joss Whedon’s short-lived but nerd-adored “Firefly,” I was like, “No kidding? Where?” And Geek With Curves was all, “look just above Mal’s [Nathan Fillion's] left shoulder.” And I was like, “Where? I don’t see Han Solo.” As it turns out, what I needed to be looking for was a small replica of Han Solo frozen in Carbonite.

[It] was brought on set since Nathan Fillion is such a huge Star Wars fan.  The props team joked around and added it to sets whenever they could, it apparently became a running joke.  It didn’t get grabbed out of every scene before shooting though. [Geek With Curves]

There are more examples in the slides that follow. You’ll have to enjoy them without me, as this post exceeds my FDA-recommended exposure to geeky crap for the week. If anyone needs me, I’ll be doing pull-ups and listening to AC/DC.

The Star Wars Holiday Special in Five Minutes

12.30.10 Written by Matt

The Star Wars Holiday Special aired in 1978 (when I was three months old), so I’ve obviously never seen it. However, like Vietnam or the Holocaust, I’ve long heard tales from survivors about how terrible it was. And judging by this five-minute condensed version (via BuzzFeed), it would be tough to overstate its crappiness. Here are the first words of the video:

The Star Wars Holiday Special! Starring Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker! … Introducing Chewbacca’s family! …  Beatrice Arthur! And Jefferson Starship!

YIKES. On the plus side, Harrison Ford is also in it, and the special ends with Princess Leia singing to Wookiees wearing choir robes. It’s traditional garb for them, I’m sure.

Family Guy’s Final Star Wars Spoof

11.19.10 Written by Matt

This is the trailer for “It’s a Trap!,” the “Family Guy” parody of Return of the Jedi that will complete Seth MacFarlane’s trilogy. As with ”Something, Something, Something, Dark Side” (the parody of The Empire Strikes Back), this will be released on DVD before it airs on Fox.

This series has never really done it for me — nothing in the video so much as made me smile — but it’s not like I can fault MacFarlane for making these. This last spoof is gonna make him a boatload of cash, which he can leave at the dock with his yacht of cash and barge of cash. I’m not sure why he keeps all of his cash on seafaring vessels. Hollywood people tend to be eccentric.

Irreverent show to skewer popular film

07.13.10 Written by Brandon

Adult Swim’s “Robot Chicken” is readying a third spoof of the popular Star Wars franchise, this time with C3PO voice talent Anthony Daniels and High School Musical’s Zac Efron joining the cast.  “Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III” is expected to “riff” on all aspects of George Lucas’ sci-fi universe and, just like the two previous specials, have action figures kicking each other in the nuts.  The special will have thirteen different writers, because you can’t expect one guy to come up with something as funny as C-3PO going through a metal detector.

In addition to Daniels and Charlie St. Cloud, “Community” co-star Donald Glover and “Cleveland Show” co-creator Mike Henry will make their debut “Robot Chicken” appearances. Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Ahmed Best (Jar Jar Binks) will also return.

“We wanted to take the Star Wars universe and see if through the eyes of our Robot Chicken: Star Wars Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Gary the Stormtrooper,” said co-creator Matthew Senreich. “Yeahhhh!” he added, then continued playing video games.
